To Help Get Us Moving

Julia’s Great Rise to Lead LaborThe aftermath of the recent Labor leadership challenge saw our own

local Federal MP, Julia Gillard end up at the helm of the Australian Labor Party into the next election. The new leader of Australia.

Voters will shortly have an opportunity to endorse her again as Local Member, but also this time, as Prime Minister of our great country.

Those who have met her locally will know that she is very down to earth, hard working, professional and has a genuine care for, not only her local electorate, but the broad Labor cause.

This is certainly a historic time. The fi rst female Prime Minister, what will her leadership style be? What will the new Prime Minister bring to Federal Government? What effect will her leadership have on the up coming election? We all must wait and see.

Jill Hennessy, Member for Altona said “It is terrifi c that our fi rst female Prime Minister comes from the western suburbs.“Regardless of who people vote for, Julia Gillard, as Prime Minister, represents a great role model for

young people, particularly young women, from the West.” Ms Hennessy said.

Residents of Point Cook and surrounding areas will get a direct road link to the new Williams Landing Railway Station, due to $24 million provided by the State Government to extend the Palmers Road overpass beyond the Princes Freeway and across the Werribee rail line.

Williams Landing Station works are due to start by the end of the year.

The Palmers Road overpass will integrate public transport services and road links for families living and working in this growing area.

Palmers Road will be developed as a continuous north-south route for more than six kilometres from Dunnings Road in Point Cook and through the new Williams Landing Estate to Sayers Road at Laverton North.

JIll Hennessy, Member for the Altona Electorate,

said this is a great result for our growing suburbs. The timely completion of these key transport projects is vitally important as we continues to grow, with the population of Point Cook and Williams Landing expected to reach 96,000 within 20 years.

“The new Palmers Road rail overpass and the Williams Landing Station development will provide better and safer connections for rail patrons, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, with easier access to schools and community facilities for local people,” Ms Hennessy said.

Works on the new overpass are scheduled to start by the end of the year, with completion expected in 2012-13.

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITORI have enjoyed reading the articles as they have

turned up this month. We are regularly getting more and more local contributions which is a fantastic result. Local content I think is the real gold in this world of page after page of house listings, or articles sourced from mainstream feeds.

We are after a local enthusiastic Journalist to become our volunteer local reporter - students, this is a fantastic opportunity to get some experience and get published. Our readership is expanding and although small by comparison we play an important part in promoting local community.

You can be a part of that.

It has been an interesting week in politics with the local Federal Member becoming Australia’s next Prime Minister.

With the announcment of Williams Landing station and the Palmers Road Extension, the next big slice of local infrastructure will be under construction in the not to distant future.

I encourage people to get involved in their local community, have your say, Point Cook is growing, connect with this new and exciting community.

PUBLISHERS COLUMNAction at the Hobsons Bay

Community Workshop!Late in May the tenants of the new Hobsons Bay

Community Workshop received the keys from Council to this wonderful redeveloped building in Queens Street Altona and began to move in and develop the interior of the workshop.

Being occupied by the Williamstown Performing Arts Group, the Altona City Theatre, together with the Hobsons Bay Mens Shed Network of Sheds in the district, the venture will obviously be of great benefi t to the local community.

The theatre groups have long desired a place to store props and create sets for their regular performances in some place in the municipality.

The Mens Sheds of the district have been developing over a period of years. The member groups of the Australian Mens Shed Association have already grown to 416 in number throughout Australia in just a few years. The Federal Association have been fortunate in securing a $3Million grant over 4 years to continue the Mens Sheds good work. The Mens Sheds improve the lives of people effected by depression in conjunction with Beyond Blue and the Council of the Ageing.

Here in Hobsons Bay, the Local Council is assisting development of a major workshop with a very broad agenda.

Right now, development is taking place on a major wood working machinery workshop, a community printing shop capable of printing community newspapers as well as producing fl yers and newsletters for community groups, a computer training area including a computer kiosk for local access, together with a training classroom which has been well equipped, to upgrade the skills of local persons seeking employment.

Obviously worth a visit. The Community workshop is currently open for visitors and those who wish to join in the activities, Monday through to Friday, from 10am to 3pm, except on Tuesday at the moment.

If the gate is open

we are open

The workshop is now open for people who wish to get involved in the local Men’s Shed activities.

Message from Prime Minister Julia Gillard MP - Member for Lalor.

It is with the great humility, resolve and enthusiasm that I was recently sworn in as Prime Minister.

This is a country that I love. It is a national community with which I feel a strong sense of belonging and I am deeply honoured to lead and represent the Australian Government. I am also deeply honoured to continue to represent the people of Lalor.

I asked my colleagues to make a leadership change because I believed that a good Government was losing its way. It was a Government that had made significant reforms and stimulated the economy during the uncertainty of the global recession.

But we needed to do more and we needed a change.

I believe fundamentally that the basic education and health services that Australians rely on and their decent treatment at work is at risk at the next election.

I take on the role of Prime Minister because I believe we must work harder at protecting those essential services that are at risk under an Abbott Government.

I have often said that there is seamlessness between my role as a Minister and my role as Member for Lalor. That will continue to be the case.

The issues that affect residents in our local area are the very same issues we

So how would you go about using the internet to promote your business?

There are a number of ways that come to mind straight away that dont even require a website, for example you can :

• Use email to contact your existing clients and tell them about what special offers or new products you have coming up.

• You can have an adv displayed on someone elses website with you location, contact details and special offer.

• You can write articles and publish them to on-line directories like “ArticleCity.com” or “EzineArticles.com”,

making sure to include your contact details in the articles.

• You could go to various forums like Yahoo answers or Warrior Forum and respond to questions.

• If you know of another local business that has an email newsletter why not share the costs and place an adv in that newsletter.

All of these methods are available to you right now and will cost nothing or very little to implement.

If you have any questions about marketing on the Internet just drop me a email ..... [email protected]

I have a seminar coming up in August....

Payment Summaries - AVOIDING COMMON MISTAKES

Now is a timely reminder that Payment Summaries (Group Certificates in the old world) have to be provided to employees by 14 July for earnings paid in the prior year financial year. So if your reading this, and you haven’t done so, get cracking as you’re already late.

Following are a couple of the more common mistakes made when payment summaries are prepared.

• Do not include amounts you paid as employment termination payments at Total tax withheld and Gross payments. Instead, there is a special form to use for these type of payouts, the PAYG payment summary – employment termination payment.

• Do not include salary sacrificed amounts at Gross payments (or anywhere on the payment summary, they are salary sacrificed after all)

• Do not include cents at Reportable Fringe Benefits amount.

• Do not include amounts reported at Allowances in Gross payments.

Tax preparation tip: If you are on the accrual basis of accounting, you should be reporting the wages due and payable as at the end of the finacial year (less any adjustments for the prior year). This can be quite different to what goes on your payment summaries (group certificates) as you are reporting what was actually PAID.

New Wyndham councillor Marcel Mahfoud has been selected as the new

Chaffey Ward Councillor following a recent VEC count back.

The vacancy for the Chaffey ward was created following the resignation by Mark Rose (Liberal candidate in the Altona By-election in February) citing family reasons from Wyndham City Council in May.

All eligible Chaffey Ward candidates from the November 2008 election were included in the count back.

OCCASIONAL CHILD CARE TO CONTINUE

The Take-a-Break program is set to continue after the State Government came to the rescue by announcing additional funding.

Jill Hennessy, Member for Altona, said the Take-a-Break program allows parents and guardians to participate in activities including study, recreational classes, attending appointments, shopping and voluntary community activities while their children socialise and interact with other children in an early learning environment.

“Any parent knows that when you have young children sometimes it can be difficult to do simple things like attend a doctor appointment, or do banking or shopping - Take-a-Break provides short term occasional care that makes these tasks much simpler,” Ms Hennessy said.

“The Brumby Labor Government will increase funding by $1 million to $1.9 million in 2010-11.

“This additional funding will mean the more than 220 children’s centres offering the Take-a-Break child care program will continue being funded.

“The local beneficiaries of this funding are Laverton Community Children’s Centre, and Altona Meadows Community Centre Occasional Care,” she said.

“This funding is another example of how the Brumby Labor Government is committed to helping families and to working with education and community-based organisations to help provide the children’s services that families need,” Ms Hennessy said.

Martial Art Govt Accreditation and Qualifi cations - by Soke Dave Franklin 10th Dan Jujitsu.

There are many styles of martial arts practiced in Australia with many different belt systems and qualifi cations of instructors. The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has set up an accreditation process that vets martial schools for qualifi cations, teaching standards, documentation and welfare of members. This is a rigorous process and ensures that the accredited school is properly qualifi ed - unfortunately many individuals are falsely claiming black belt ranks and ‘founding’ their own styles which can be misleading and unrecognised by peers and governing bodies.

ASC has empowered a number of lead organisations to administer the accreditation process on their behalf - i.e. for Jujitsu and related arts - Australian Jujitsu Federation (AJF) and as a member school my Govt accreditation means that I am recognised by the Australian Govt and international bodies including Japan. So before considering membership in any martial art club insist on seeing proper Govt accreditation.

Soke Dave has a lineage tracing back 1200 yrs to Japan. Dave runs classes in Pt Cook and Hoppers Crossing in Jujitsu and Karate - ph 9395-4088.

View our website on davefranklinmartialarts.com for more details.

Next issue Soke Dave will explain martial art titles.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR $50,000 MEN’S SHED GRANTS

Community groups in Point Cook are encouraged to submit an application for funding to build or modify a local Men’s Shed as part of the fourth round of grants.

The Member for Altona, Jill Hennessy MP, said the funding will expand on the hugely successful network of Men’s Sheds across the state.

“The Brumby Government welcomes applications for the fourth round of grant funding to help communities meet the cost of building a new shed or redeveloping an existing shed,” Ms Hennessy said.

“Grants of up to $50,000 each have helped 76 communities meet the cost of establishing a dedicated Men’s Shed throughout the state, and I look forward to expanding this successful network to ensure they are available to men in communities that need them most.

“As well as giving older men somewhere to get together and work on worthwhile projects, men’s sheds can link them to information and services

The Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed Network just entered this great building thanks to Hobsons Bay City Council and the above State Grant.

DO YOU HAVE GLAUCOMA?Alarmingly of the over 210,000 Australians

suffering from Glaucoma around a half are undiagnosed, warns local optometrist Jason Chen.

The Principle Optometrist at Jason says Glaucoma is an eye disease which is caused by a build-up of fluid pressure in the eye. This increased pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to vision loss and blindness.

“As Glaucoma progressives slowly, many sufferers may not be aware of the condition until unrepairable vision loss has occured,” Jason says.

Regular eye examinations are essential to detect Glaucoma in its early stages so treatment can begin. Although everyone is at risk of developing Glaucoma, a family history, diabetes and age can increase the risk, he adds

HOBSONS BAY – A FAIR AND FLEXIBLE AWARD WINNER!

Hobsons Bay City Council has won a Fair and Flexible Employer Recognition award offered by the Victorian Government for providing best practice, fair and flexible working conditions.

The Member for Altona, Jill Hennessy, today congratulated the Council, which was one of 27 organisations recently recognised by the Minister for Industrial Relations, Martin Pakula, for being at the forefront of implementing fair and flexible workplace policies and practices.

Ms Hennessy said Hobson’s Bay City Council recognised that its employees were a vital part of the business in its drive to become an employer of choice: “The broad range of flexible workplace policies offered by the council attracts employees who value work/life balance and ensures that valuable staff are retained.

“Apart from a range of flexible, hours of work, child care, retirement and leave options, the council is examining a proposal for staff to donate sick leave into a bank to allow employees with chronic illness to access the bank in time of need.

GOODENIA OVATA (HOP GOODENIA)

The Hop Goodenia is a small to medium sized open shrub with light green ovate, toothed leaves. It is widespread in a number of different habitats, near the coast as well as inland, and occurs in all states except Western Australia and the Northern Territory. This fast growing species is not fussy about aspect and will grow in shady moist and shady dry spots, and in sandy, heavy and clay soils, although it does best in moist situations. It is especially suited for planting under established trees.

Many bright yellow, open flowers are produced from the leaf bases, mainly during spring and summer (August to September). The plants in the Basaltica garden, however, carried at least a few flowers during their entire first year after planting. This is a useful species for cut flowers.

Goodenia ovata, which often forms large thickets, may reach two metres tall. It is an early colonizer after fire.

Plants can become straggly unless pruned, and they are most definitely are more attractive when kept in shape. The Hop Goodenia can be damaged if exposed to frost, but the plants will return to vigorous growth in spring. New growth is resinous.

As a matter of interest, the genus was named in honour of Dr. Goodenough.

The plant in my sketch was purchased from the Newport Lakes Native Nursery in Lakes Drive (formerly Margaret Street), Newport, telephone 9391-0044. This nursery stocks an interesting selection of local indigenous plants, including some attractive wetland species. The knowledgeable staff can help you choose plants suitable for the conditions in your own indigenous garden.

The Basaltica WaterWise Garden is located on the premises of CRT Transport Group at Gate 3, 21-43 Barnes Road, Altona North. Appointments for a guided tour of the garden and the

Article Submission by Shane Tindal

On the birth of Shane’s SeminarsIt was while I was completing my Honours in Literature that I came up with the idea of conducting

weekend seminars, in my chosen fields, at our Daylesford cottage. My husband would comment ‘what am I and Padme, (our beautiful Labrador) to do when you have people in the house?’ I told him, ‘Padme will be fine, and you can go and play golf at Hepburn Springs.’ That usually ended the discussion.

Shortly after I had moved to Point Cook in March 2009, I started attending the Sanctuary Lakes Business Network Inc. One of the members suggested that I might approach Community Centres to hire their facilities, if I wanted to have my seminars in a more public setting. I began to think that this was a distinct possibility, particularly in Daylesford where the rates for the local neighbourhood centre were extremely reasonable.

So began my seminar business. In October I had seminars in Daylesford on Multicultural Philosophy and Literature and Renaissance Art. I also had seminars at Point Cook Community Learning Centre in November on African Literature and Creative Writing. They were reasonably well attended.

I made the difficult decision in January this year, to concentrate my efforts on the Point Cook and Wyndham areas.

The seminar business is not an easy one and predicting consumer tastes can be a complex matter. I have been interested in African Literature since 1998. I do not think people realize how fascinating it is compared to other literature, such as Australian, American, Irish and English. The more traditional literature seems quite dull in comparison, and I thought that the reading I did for Irish literature, which I chose to do, because of my Irish lineage, was over represented by drunks and wife beaters. Studying African Literature helps you to understand some of the problems experienced in Africa today.

In August I will present a series of seminars called Monsters, Madmen and Vampires at the Point Cook Community Learning Centre. I will examine the original novels of Frankenstein, and Dracula and compare them to the current crop of vampire writers such as Stephanie Meyer.

It seems a shift away from my dream of having seminars at our Daylesford cottage, but that is the nature of a modern business.

POSITIVE RULES!FOR POSITIVE KIDS

My name is Jennifer. I am the initiator of Positive Rules! for Positive Kids. I hold a Diploma in Acting and a Working with Children Certificate. I am a mum and a carer. I have previously held positive thinking workshops at local community centres. Currently a local school has been running Positive Rules since 2009. I am now working on Preps, Grades 1 and 2, and also answering calls from local kindergartens and care centres.

Since my child’s attendance at school (2007), and my work in criminal and civil law, I have seen a real need for positive thinking and a boost in self esteem in children of all ages, so welcome to the development of my new workshops for kids from age 4-12, teens, and adults.

They are fun and enlightening, can be held in the classroom, my home, yours, or, if the weather is right, even outside. If you have children attending the workshop, then I would expect you as the parent or teacher to participate too!

The workshops consist of drawing, craftwork, light discussion, and some appropriately aged visualisations (a cloud filled trip to unicorn land for the younger girls, or perhaps a ride on an elephant for the boys), a “wishing stone” and other tokens to take home. Groups of children are given either a one-off 2 hr workshop at a very minimal price - remember, although Positive Rules cannot be classified a Not for Profit organisation because it is owned by a single entity, it IS literally NFP in that each child takes so much home with them, not only what they have learned, but art work, craft work, a “wishing” stone, and/or a “magic” stone, and an affirmation card that instils a sense of optimism and pride in the child, and is a specific message only for the individual (examples can be sent with our info pack) or a three hour workshop (learning peace and positive attitude, goal climbing and recapping both) for less than the price of a packet of cigarettes or a movie ticket. The change in the children is dramatic, uplifting, and incredibly positive - and well worth a workshop being interposed into a school morning.

The workshops are very very simple and do not require a lot of hard work or physics degree. They are not university-minded workshops. They are simple, much as life should be, easy, much as life

is meant to be and inexpensive ways of dealing with day to day, or bigger, negative circumstances in your world.

Poor Technique Leads to Limitations...As a tennis coach who has been around the world and worked with some of the best players and coaches

in the world, it always disappoints me to see just how much we really don’t understand about technique development in this country and how crucial it is to our players if they are to see the highest echelons of this great game.

Poor technique leads to the following:

1. Inefficient stroke production

It should feel easy to hit a tennis ball! Those who expend huge amounts of energy to hit a ball hard, simply aren’t hitting it right. There is a complete lack of understanding in this country amongst coaches about the relationship between grip, contact shape (leverage) and swingline. If I have a certain grip, my arm will have a certain contact shape and I will require the correct swingline to match. If I have these, I will have a mechanically strong shot, so I won’t need to be muscular to hit it! Look at Roger Federer...

2. Injuries

It is a logical progression that if I have poor technique, then I need to compensate by using more muscles to hit the ball. This places more stress on certain muscles and these will break down over time and injuries will occur. Again there appears to be a complete lack of understanding of fundamental principles of movement amongst coaches in this country especially in relation to the serve. The number of players I have seen with poor technique that have sustained injuries because of it is astounding and completely unnecessary. Coaches,

there is a better way!!!

3. Tactical limitations

In order to hit a certain shot, I need to have good technique to be able to execute it. If I don’t have good technique, I can’t. A good example of this is having a Semi Western forehand grip and an inside swingline which don’t match (notorious in this country!). A player who has this, will slide across the ball most times instead of going around it and will always struggle to hit cross court effectively or with spin. This limits their shot selection and leads to situations where, if I can force this player to attempt this shot, I will possibly force an error out of them or at the very least get a golden opportunity for myself to end the point. It is painful for me as a coach to watch kids play matches and get upset with themselves when they miss that shot. They simply don’t understand that they CAN’T hit it. It is a floor in their technique.

Coaches need to have good understanding of movement and be able to progressively build this into their coaching sessions. Basic fundamental principles can be built into coaching sessions and taught to kids from a fairly young age. It is important to get it right as soon as possible. Having to correct a technical deficiency is always tougher than building it the right way from the start. The older players get, the harder this becomes...
