WaharoaTene Waitere’s carved waharoa (gateway) has become an inconic image of Taupo, framing the view from the lakeshore south to the mountains. Carved in the late 1920s, the gateway stands at the southern end of Tongariro Street.

100% Pure New Zealand Ora : Garden Of WellbeingTaupo Museum is home to the ‘100% Pure New Zealand Ora - Garden of Wellbeing’, a very special living exhibit and Garden of National Signifi cance. This stunning New Zealand garden was designed to showcase the “essence of the central North Island on the world stage” and won gold at the 2004 Chelsea Flower Show (London) - the equivalent of the plant Olympics! Lush ferns and Cordyline (the iconic cabbage tree), together with hundreds of other plants creates the feel of the New Zealand bush. Water fl ows down the silica terraces – which were inspired by the geothermal area of Orakei Korako – and from one geothermal pool to another, as the sound of bird song drifts through the air. Turangi LibraryThe Battle of the Mountains that are etched on the windows of the Turangi Public library, Te Whare Putea o Turangi, were designed by Ngati Tuwharetoa artist, Te Maari Gardiner. The windows facing west have the most striking etchings and represent all the mountains and Pihanga. The windows facing the eastern side show the Battle of the Mountains for Pihanga’s hand. At the entrance to the library are Pihanga and Tongariro.P : 07 386 8908 A : Town Centre, Turangi
Maori Rock CarvingsIn the late 1970s master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell came to his mother’s land at Lake Taupo and on a boat trip around the Western Bays he saw the cliffs at Mine Bay and saw the opportunity to use them as a canvas for his work. Matahi decided to carve a likeness of Ngatoroirangi, the visionary Maori navigator who guided the Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa tribes to the Taupo area over a thousand years ago. In recognition of the multi-cultural nature of New Zealand, Matahi also carved two smaller fi gures of Celtic design, which depict the south wind and a mermaid. The Ngatoroirangi carving took four summers to complete and the carvers took no payment other than donations to cover the cost of the scaffolding. The Maori rock carvings are over 10 metres high and are only accessible by boat. The peaceful spiritual and cultural beauty of these magnifi cent carvings towering over deep waters are beautiful in a setting sun. A : Mine Bay, Lake Taupo(only accessible by boat)
Fish FlyAs part of acknowledging our history of trout fi shing, Taupo District Council commissioned this sculpture. Brown and rainbow trout were liberated into the waters of the Central Plateau in the 1890’s.A : Horomatangi Street, Taupo
Millennium MilestonesTwenty-two mosaic artworks, designed and created by the people of Turangi in 2001, lead the visitor on an artistic journey through the area’s past, beginning with the prow of a waka and ending at the stern. Each mosaic tells part of the region’s story, and are a special blend of Maori and European history.A : Alongside SH 1, Turangi

Hexagonal Stone TowersThe towers represent the volcanic processes at work in the heartland. Pumice, river stones, dacite, black basalt, scoria and obsidian – all local volcanic rocks – fi ll this sculpture’s six steel baskets. The hexagonal shape of each basket represents the cracks which form when lava cools quickly, as can be seen on Mason’s Rock at Whakaipo Bay, Lake Taupo.A : Corner of Tongariro Street and Spa Road, Taupo
Waharoa The Waharoa, gateway or spiritual entrance, is Contact Energy’s gift to the people of Taupo celebrating 50 years of geothermal generation in the reigon. Designed and carved by local master carver Delanie Brown, the Waharoa tells the story of the arrival of geothermal energy to the Taupo region. It was unveiled on Saturday 14 November 2009.A : Entrance to Taupo War Memorial Cenotaph, Tongariro Street, Taupo
Taupo Tectonics Created by Coromandel artist Barry Brickell in 1985, the hand-modelled terracotta tiles represent the volcanic and geological activity taking place underneath the Taupo region – the drama created by gigantic plates of the Earth’s crust grinding against one another kilometres beneath the surface. A : Corner of Ruapehu and Horomatangi Streets, Taupo
The Cloak of TiaThis stunning 3m tall blown glass sculpture is local glass blower Lynden Over’s interpretation of the great Maori explorer Tia’s own interpretation of Lake Taupo. The Tuwharetoa ancestor Tia, discovered Lake Taupo and the surrounding mountains, likening them to his own cloak. Now the 4,000 individually crafted glass feathers stand as a testament to this great explorers own artistic impression. It is the fi rst sculpture to be commissioned by the Taupo Sculpture Trust.A : Entrance of the Great Lake Centre, Tongariro Street, Taupo
