This year Art Maui introduces film and video to the exhibition. Spurred on by new developments in technology and design, amateur film and video auteurs are now able to express themselves in media previously available only to larger production companies. We hope you enjoy the selection.

NOTES ON JURYING
The process of separating good work from bad, strong from weak, may be approached from different points. Poor presentation alone calls for rejection. Other considerations are the artist's willingness to explore, the control of his or her medium, and the sum of aesthetic values represented. Each piece is judged individually as well as in comparison to all of the entries.
I feel that the artist's sensitivity to his or her work is represented in the presentation. I dislike presentation as an "environment for the piece" because it becomes disproportionate and may destroy the piece.
As a juror, I have my own values and will remain consistent with them. This is most difficult for any juror. I feel strongly that the juror should consistently exercise what he believes throughout the jurying process.

The juror can only indicate his concerns for quality. My quality may not be yours. It's a lofty position to be a juror. Scary, because I think one must be very sure, and that's not always possible. It becomes even more difficult with more jurors jurying together.
I leave my personal taste outside the door when jurying. Not always an easy task, but necessary to be professional about it. One draws from experience and exposure of the very best work in any genre, and applies the technical knowledge of the medium, and chooses to say "yes" or "no". I look most of all for things I've never seen before. Those are the hardest to find.
I love to be a juror because it demands such intense concentration. It sharpens my visual skills; it keeps me really looking at art instead of glancing at it; it keeps me learning; and it constantly teaches a humility, an awe of the art-making process.

Dear People of Maui, For the fourth consecutive year we come together to honor
Maui's finest visual artists. A juried show is always a difficult time and we applaud each
artist's creativity, skill and courage whether his or her work hangs on these walls or not.
Creativity exists in everyone and each of us expresses it in different ways. A unique piece of art takes not only imagination, skill and technical knowledge, but a special knowledge of ourselvesa oneness that allows us to fully express who we are and what we want to say to our fellow man.
Art is a reflection of our culture and ourselves, so take a close look at this show. It has been put together by devoted, caring individuals. It is Maui. It is you.
