It is natural for each generation to worry about the next. In America, there is particular cause for concern. We know that the pervasive preaching of a post-modern culture seeks to undermine the faith of our children and young people. There is a movement afoot that would systematically eradicate any trace of faith in the next generation.
The apprehension we feel in our day is nothing new. It is apparent in the Scriptures that the passing of the baton from one generation to the next has always been a challenging maneuver. Jude wrote his short letter at the close of the apostolic generation: “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3).
Jude’s passion parallels that of the psalmist who warned that truth must be conveyed to the next generation to avoid dire consequences. (See Psalm 78:1-8.) One generation must declare truth to the next, and it must be intentional. (See Psalm 145:4.)
It is a practice of our church to honor past generations who paid a price for the blessings we enjoy today. Then, we must serve the current generation of members who make up the heart of our church. The present generation, however, must be focused on passing truth to the next generation. We must invest heavily in our children and young people if the truth that saves souls is to be embraced by the next generation.
Thank God for our youth and children’s ministry teams at Atlanta West for understanding the value of investing in the future of the church. There are great challenges in these ministries and no finished products. When you minister to a teenager or child, you are exercising faith that truth does endure to all generations. (See Psalm 100:5.)
It was my privilege to invest over seventeen years of my life in youth ministry before becoming a “senior” pastor. I believe in the power of the Bible and the Holy Spirit to save and keep the next generation. It is also extremely encouraging to see that the next generation is not just keeping the faith—they are boldly sharing it and changing the world one soul at a time.
Let me show you what is happening in the youth of the United Pentecostal Church International.
On August 5, over 23,000 young people and youth workers will converge on Oklahoma City for the 2015 North American Youth Congress (NAYC). The convention has grown exponentially in the past few years. This year’s event sold out in just fourteen hours—that’s a rate of 1,286 people registering every hour. (For the purpose of comparison, in 2013 it took seven months to register 12,000 participants.) We will have over sixty people from our church at NAYC this year. Our Family Pastor, Bro. Brad Fain, and I are scheduled to speak to next generation leaders.
NAYC is an incredible event. When the doors of the arena open there will be a stampede of students racing for the best seats. The girls will be wearing modest dresses, and their uncut hair will set them apart as godly young women. The young men will be clean-cut and also modestly attired. When the first song starts, the arena will erupt in sincere worship. The preaching will challenge students to turn the world upside down with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When the altar call is given, the sustained response of prayer will be deep and powerful.
What will become of the next generation? Watch a video clip from NAYC and you will see that “His truth endures to all generations.”
There is good news for our future. Record numbers of young people are participating in Bible Quizzing (192 teams at regional tournaments and 107 teams in the August finals), Apostolic Youth Corps (402 participants, which is a record), and P7 Bible clubs in schools (over 300 members).
This next-generation revival is occurring in our church. Our students are involved in serving in many ministries, and they are examples of worship and Apostolic identity. This summer, at our Georgia District Youth and Children’s Camps, a significant number of students from our church were honored for outstanding participation in Sheaves for Christ and Save Our Children. Special awards for “Christian Character” and “Camper of the Year” went to several of our students.
God is working through our efforts to make a difference in the next generation. I am thankful that Atlanta West values our children and young people. Please join me in praying for them, encouraging them, and passing on the truth that will endure to all generations.
