    A Wild Ride!

    Lesson Book: pages 46–47

Artistic Etude 4Plan Your PlaysWhen playing a new piece, successful pianists scan the music before playing . Plan your “plays” by looking for:

    • Clef signs—note anything unusual, such as two treble clefs rather than a treble and a bass clef .

    • Key signature—what notes are played sharp or flat?• Time signature—how many beats in a measure?

What note receives one count?• Dynamics—note the opening dynamic sign

and the changes that take place after .• Articulation—legato or staccato?• Patterns—find rhythms and note patterns that are repeated .• Tempo—notice the opening tempo, then any changes after that .
