MANIFESTO

UNITED ARTISTS FOR EUROPE

Europe is in crisis. The rise of extremism and populism, and the return of nationalism in all its guises are imperilling the grand ideas of a peace-ful continent and a community united by culture and open to the world.

More than ever, Europe needs benchmarks so that people can recall not only its utility but its unity. More than ever, Europe needs proof that it is not just a bureaucratic idea and a collection of direc-tives from Brussels. More than ever, it is urgent to demonstrate that Europe is not only a place for the free circulation of ideas, people and goods but also for something too often forgotten: a shared artis-tic, aesthetic and cultural heritage.

Europe is a land that has always been shaped by the arts. It is a continent of capitals of art, of mu-seums and galleries. It is a continent for excur-sions devoted to the discovery of ancient art, the art of the Renaissance, Impressionism, Bauhaus design and Dada. The European identity that we share, from Dublin to Budapest, is also an artistic identity. At this moment of dangerous nationalist assertion, artists have not had enough say. For who, in fact, is more European than a painter or sculptor, whether Italian, Czech, Portuguese, German, or Danish?

MANIFESTO

Artists are voyagers whose work is fed by what they encounter and discover in their travels, re-treats and exiles. Through their work, they open new horizons to the real; their art knows no fron-tiers, not even those of language. Who could be better suited to defend a united Europe?

In signing this appeal, contemporary artists li-ving and working in Europe want to affirm that, for them, Europe is not a vain ideal but one that they are committed to defend, in the interest of all, against the perils it faces today.

PRESENTATION

A selection from thirty artworks donated by leading contemporary artists from all over Europe will be exhi-bited at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Ely House, from May 21-23 and then auctioned for charity auction on June 3 at Hotel Café Royal, under the gavel of Simon de Pury.

Funds raised by the auction will be allocated by The Hexagon Society Foundation to European cultural pro-jects related to art including Europa Nostra and Arta-gon.

The initiative will also launch an artists’ appeal for a united Europe. In signing the appeal, Europe’s contem-porary artists will affirm that, for them, Europe is not a vain ideal but one that they are committed to defend, in the interests of all, against the peril it faces today.

Based on an original idea by Bernard-Henri Lévy, this unprecedented initiative will take place in London on May 21-23 and June 3 2019, to coincide with the European elections. It seeks to affirm artists’ devotion to European ideals, values and culture, and to benefit European cultural initiatives.

On May 22 and 23, during the public exhibition at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Ely House, talks will be held about art and culture and its place in today’s Europe.

On the evening of May 22, Bernard-Henri Lévy will perform a one-off representation of his new one-man play about Europe, Looking for Europe, written for the occasion of the European elections.

The charity auction will take place on June 3 at Hotel Café Royal, in Piccadilly. Bernard-Henri Lévy, Simon de Pury and Thaddaeus Ropac will attend the auction, along with artists who signed the United Artists for Europe Manifesto.

PRESENTATION

UNITED ARTISTS FOR EUROPE is a committed event that brings

together contemporary artists who are devoted to a generous and open

Europe.

This is more than a charity auction: it is an artistic message of hope

for a continent in the midst of an identity crisis.

«Since I was born seventy years ago, Europe lives in peace and growing prosperity. For the first time in my lifetime, this harmony seems threatened.

I think that the artists can be guides in this troubled epoch.»

BERNARD-HENRI LÉVY, Initiator of United Artists for Europe

«The European identity that weshare, from Dublin to Budapest, is also an artistic identity. Art is the cement of Europe. From Mozart to Picasso, from Leonardo to Francis Bacon every European shares the same passion for the same great artists.

We all admire Mona Lisa and think of it as a glorious symbol of European culture. There is no border when it comes to art, especially in Europe, the homeland of great painters, sculptors and architects. This is United Artists for Europe’s aim : to show that through art and culture Europe can be rebuilt.»

“ I am a nomadic artist. Travel and the exploration of new places has always been essential to making art and to my way of life. Europe was my first destination, and it represented a type of freedom which was entirely new to me coming from Ex-Yugoslavia. The memories I have of living in Amsterdam with Ulay and traveling the continent in our old Citroen police van are what drives my passion to help support the European ideals of today. ”

“ Europe, is the possibility of access to cultures which are both similar and different so to put in place a shared cultural patrimony. To participate to the event ‘United Artists for Europe’ is an example of this and I was reminded immediately of the photographic series I made at the Palace of Versailles, particularly in the location of the Hameau de la Reine. Among this series, I chose a photograph which was taken during the restauration of this location, titled ‘Le Hameau de la Reine - Observatoire.’ Throughout history and time, the Palace of Versailles has remained one of the most emblematic locations of Europe. ”

“ Why is there an EU flag on our Anger Management punchbag? Because it would be ideal if Brexit backers could take out some of their anger on something other than a whole nation. They should each have a punchbag and go crazy on it at home. Then afterwards, they might be more balanced and nuanced in political debates.

Everyone should have a role in the Brexit debate. You as a citizen – artist or not – have an obligation to be engaged because the outcome will shape generations to come. We think artworks have a role in the Brexit debate because they speak in a different language, one that can hit you where a politician’s words or a newspaper article cannot.

Our punchbag sculpture uses humour to speak about something that is actually tragic. But the motif on the punchbag could be anything you fear in a simplistic way. It is there to help you take out your frustrations – in a healthier way than attacking other people. It should sit in the lobby of Westminster.”

“ All these European extreme nationalists who want to break up the European community have a lack of me-mory of what happened in history. We have to defend the European community simply already for one fact: that historically we have the longest period of peace ever in  Europe. I would be afraid when the European community would collapse this could generate a power vacuum and we would end up again in a war in Europe. ”

“ UNIVERSAL CONCIOUSNESS

When the sun shines it has no borders. The sun is god. There is only wonderful diversity in Nature, not division. There is biological division which promotes multiplication and growth which is an optimistic act of continuum and progress.Primordial natural trinity is a first principle of Life and Art is an instinctive force of human nature. With this work I wish to convey a natural commitment to Europe and connect to the Universal Conciousness in the World. ”

XAVIER VEILHAN29.

“ In my opinion, the European feeling exists outside of any political framework. It is already here. There is an affinity between the different countries of Europe, thanks to travel, for example. This European feeling goes from the Scandinavian countries to the Mediterranean ones, and in regard to the strength of this feeling, I think that the political construction of Europe is not enough consolidated to this day. This creates a form of impatience with Europe. We should already be ahead from where we are in the construction of a united Europe, and yet we have been backing away for more than a decade.Participating to this project is a way for me to affirm this European feeling, which is not contradictory to the national feeling - on the contrary.”

“ In the current century, artists curators and gallerists have gained visibility and mediatic power as never seen before. What do we make of all this influence we supposedly do have? We should get together, raise funds and awareness for the causes that deserve so. Europa unita at the moment must be our first priority. ”
