Upcoming Workshops Gail WatersJoin us at our Members Meeting on Feb. 6 for a free demonstration by mixed media artist Joyce McAdams, in preparation for her
upcoming February 16-17 Workshop at the Artist Workshop Studios: “As a part of the workshop, students will develop skills working with color, contrast and composition. Basic collaging skills will include gluing, cutting, tearing, multiple layers and working with acrylic and digital imagery. I will also be available to critique, discuss presentation and share my 40 years of experience as a professional artist. The beginning artist will find that collage is an exciting way to unlock their creativity. For the experienced artist this will be a way to explore new avenues in their own work. At the end of the workshop students will leave with one matted and one framed finished work of art.”
Early signup is encouraged to secure your space. We still have some openings in Steve Rogers Feb. 7-9 Watercolor Workshop as well. Remember: Artists’ Workshop members receive a discounted rate for workshops. Pick up a Workshop brochure at the AWI Studios or Gallery. See website for full details. Contact Gail Waters at, 386-943-9300, or email: [email protected] if you have any questions.
(above) On Jan. 11, AWI joined forces with MDC to provide a retreat and “bonding” session for the newly elected SE Volusia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Around noon, 20 members of the board and staff, took a tour of our lagoon provided by MDC, followed by a very creative and fun 2-hour painting session with our own Ruth Squitieri. You can see by the smiles and the results, that everyone had a great time!(below) Workshop artist Steve Rogers presents his watercolor demo at the Jan. 2 Members Meeting.

The Gallery on Canal St. Liz Clayton
Exciting things are happening in the Gallery on Canal! Congratulations go out to Grace Foley who sold her painting on the very last day of the “In the Abstract” show. And congratulations to Regina Wise and Scott Hiestand for the sale of a painting and Barbara Ortiz for the sale of TWO paintings from the current “In Love
With Landscapes” show. We had over 100 visitors visit the gallery on the last First Saturday, and we have had several people visit the gallery who have never been in before!
In conjunction with our current show, Cathy Berse and Barbara Ortiz, both featured artists, will be presenting an art talk at the Studios on Sunday, February 3 at 2:00 PM. Join us for this free, casual, but informative presentation as they discuss the history and inspiration behind painting with the effects of outdoor light and atmosphere. Also, Cathy and Barbara will each have a free drawing for one of their small plein-air paintings!
The current show runs through Feb.28. The March show which will run for one month, will be Artists’ Choice. Since there is no theme, this would be a great time to show the painting you did for the Members’ Show.
Let me know if you are interested in being a featured artist for the April show, “Wonderful Watercolor.” People are already signing up, and there are only four panels left: [email protected] or 386-427-3996.

Community ExhibitsBob & Patty Stinziano
There is still time to check out the great artwork in the New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater Libraries. In the NSB library you will see Regina Wise and Victor Brisebois impressive artwork on display. You may know Regina from her work with children in the Summer Art Camp and her work with teens. Vic is also involved teaching the kids in the Summer Art Camp. This is great display from these two talented artists. The Edgewater Library has the artwork of Charles (Rick) Orr. He is part of the plein air group. Rick and the group go to various places around town to paint every day life in NSB. He captures what he sees with brilliant watercolor. His paintings are colorful and interesting.
Both of these venues provide a great way to show your work. We have received a lot of positive feedback from both libraries and they look forward to our exhibits. Please contact us if you are interested in showing your work in either of these venues.

Thank you to every member who volunteered their time to make this year’s Annual Members’ Show a VERY SPECIAL event. I know that Mary Peschel-Herlehy has included many pictures of the Saturday evening Gala and Awards ceremony, but you had to have been there! Our Studio A, the clay studio, was transformed into a Paris Bistro, with no detail overlooked by our very creative chairman, Joanne Reilly. I could not have been more proud of this outstanding show and party...Thank you Joanne for your attention to detail and eye for perfection! Meanwhile, I was glad that I did not have to do the judging. The quality and diversity of artwork was amazing. Thanks to all who entered! Actually, the whole evening made me go home and change my New Years’ resolution. I did not put a piece in the show....I felt I was just too “busy” with my other responsibilities. So, my new New Years’ resolution is to take advantage of the learning opportunities at AWI and more importantly, spend some time every day painting or drawing. My ultimate goal is to next year, enter the show and be more involved in the actual creative process! At some point, we all get busy with life and think we’ll do it when we have more time! By offering great classes, workshops , and open studios, AWI can help ignite our individual creative spirits. Join me in planning to make next year’s show even bigger by becoming more involved and committing to developing the artist that dwells within you...but, whatever you do, next year, be in the show!
Happy New Year!
