The Montauk Chamber of Commerce hosts its 31st annual Fall Festival on the Green in the center of downtown Montauk Saturday and Sunday

The festivities begin with the annual “Famous Clam Chowder” contest held at 11 AM Saturday. Over 30 local restaurants contribute gallons of their best chowder. Food personali ty judges wil l award the best New England and Manhattan chowders. Even visitors get to be judges and vote

On The Green At ‘The End’for the People’s Choice Award. Winners will be announced at 3 PM on the Chamber’s Facebook page, tweeted on Twitter, and posted on the website at www.montaukchamber.com.

Chowder’s not your thing? No worries. Both days will include many activities for children, such as a free 30 horse Carousel, inflatable rides, face painting, pumpkin decorating, crab races and more. For adults there will be live music, a farmers market and plant sales, along with raffles, October-fest style

food, clams and oysters. Long Island wines and beer will be available. Live music by Nancy Atlas and the Uncle Susie Band will be featured on Saturday from 2 to 5 PM.

Saturday night, the Lighthouse District explodes with a Grucci fireworks show launched over Umbrella Beach at 7 PM. The Atlantic Terrace Resort Hotel is sponsoring the pyrotechnics.

On Sunday the Fest ival cont inues wi th addi t ional activities under the tent including the Annual Chinese Auction by the Montauk Playhouse. Live Music by the 3 B’s will be featured from 11 AM to 3 PM. At the conclusion of the festival, the Cash Catch (a minimum of $15,000 in cash prize money will be awarded) winners will be announced along with the winners of other raffle prizes.

The festival is the major annual fundraiser sponsored by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce. Much of the proceeds are donated to organizations such as the Montauk Food Pantry, the Montauk Fireworks Sponsored by the Montauk Chamber, and the Frank Cappozola Scholarship Fund.

Preparations for the 2nd Annual Montauk’s Scarecrow Days presented by Montauk Youth and the Montauk Village Association have begun. Those wishing to participate in the contest, which involves making a designing a unique scarecrow for placement around the village, can pick up a scarecrow frame (donated by RBS)

and location assignment at Keeshan Real Estate. The general rules, as posted on the Montauk

Youth website are outlined below.Each entry must be designed for outdoor

display and constructed to withstand all weather conditions. Organizers are not responsible for any damage or loss to all or any part of a scarecrow.

Participants must place their scarecrow and all related props and materials in the location determined by event organizers. Assigned locations will be determined on a “first come, first choice” basis.

Montauk’s Scarecrow Days is an event for children of all ages. Scarecrows must be in good taste. Excessively violent scarecrows, as well as any scarecrows that display offensive, crude or derogatory components, are not permitted and may be rejected. Scarecrows that reflect controversial, political or religious themes will not be accepted. Organizers reserve the right to reject or remove any entry that fails to meet these standards or that is otherwise unacceptable or inappropriate. Participants must maintain their respective scarecrow from the time of installation through November 2. Participants are responsible for removal and disposal of their scarecrow.

All entries must be installed at their assigned location by Friday to be included in the judging. Winners will be announced at Montauk Youth’s Field Day on October 14.Call Maureen at 631.668.1540 with questions.

The bass bite is banging in Montauk, both inshore and from the shore, with surfcasters shoulder to shoulder on the rocks at the point looking to get in on the blitz.

At sea, last Thursday Jamie Wallace (above) landed a 48-pound striper aboard Captain Mario Melito’s the Lady Grace out of Westlake Marina.

Same day the Hamptons’ most eligible bachelor, Jimmy Conigliaro (below), showed he’s an outdoorsy dude. He landed this 32-pounder aboard the Grand Slam, which sails out of Gone Fishing Marina.

According to one old salt source, the action will continue right into November.

Today’s Birthday: Gwen Stefani, 1995When Gwen Stefani was growing up in Fullerton, California she suffered from dyslexia

and attention deficit disorder. Drawn to music, she listened to her parents’ records – they like Folk Music - and she performed high school musicals.

In 1986 her brother, Eric, invited her to try out for a band he was forming. The Band became No Doubt and its unique brand of rock and Ska quickly found a healthy audience.

In addition to touring with No Doubt Stefani collaborated with artists like Moby and Eve and began dating Gavin Rossdale, the front man for the band Bush.

In 2001 No Doubt earned two Grammys for songs on its Let’s Rock album but Stefani decided to leave the group soon after. Her debut album Love. Angel. Music.

Baby. was a huge success, blending techno rock, dance music, and New Wave and featuring scores of talented collaborators. It earned five Grammy nominations including Album Of The Year and stamped Stefani as a legitimate superstar. In 2008 she reunited with No Doubt and the band went on a world tour the following year.

Stefani comes from a long line of seamstresses; she entering the world of fashion was a natural progression for her. Her creations attracted a number of A-list celebrities.

She and Rossdale have two children; she donated $1 million to the Japanese Earthquake relief fund and she continues to raise money for the victims.
