1. Call for Submissions: Fredericton Arts Alliance’s Artists in Residence Summer 2016 Theme: New Ground – exploring what it means to come to a new place or to come to new understandings of place; the idea of home and of remaking the idea of home. The Fredericton Arts Alliance invites submissions for our Fifteenth Artist in Residence Summer Series. We seek emerging and experienced artists working in any media, including architecture, performance, music, dance, media, literary arts, visual art and fine craft. Artists from diverse cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply. This year we are asking artists to reflect on beginnings. The city has recently welcomed refugee families from Syria, and people from many other corners of the globe have also made Fredericton their new home. What does it mean for the newcomers? And what does it mean for Fredericton and for the people who have always called Fredericton home? As different artists in varied media focus their creative energies on this theme, we hope to engender discussion among the artists and with members of the public – both local and visitors, who visit the residencies over the summer. The residences will take place at the Soldiers’ Barracks, Historic Garrison District from June 6 to September 5. Each residency lasts for one week. Interested artists are asked to indicate how they intend to approach the theme in their written application. Application forms and application guidelines are available on the Fredericton Arts Alliance website – frederictonartsalliance.ca. More information is available via email at [email protected]. The Fredericton Arts Alliance hopes to be able to mount an exhibition of work produced over the summer, but that is not yet confirmed. 3. Repartee comes to the Capital Complex May 5 The Capital Complex presents Repartee on May 5. Doors open at 8pm, and the show starts at 9pm. Tickets are $8 at the door. Repartee wants to make you dance! Repartee were formed in the summer of 2009 when Meg Warren (vocals) got tired of singing opera and decided to start making her own music. Enlisting the talents of some of Newfoundland’s greatest rock and pop musicians (guitarist Robbie Brett, drummer Nick Coultas-Clarke and keyboardist Josh Banfield), the band quickly went from the grimy bars of Newfoundland to sharing the stage with the likes of LIGHTS, Tegan and Sara, Dragonette, Arkells, and more.

In 2012, they won all five MusicNL Awards for which they were nominated and in 2013 they were nominated for an East Coast Music Award for Rising Star Recording of the Year, and they also performed at the 2013 ECMA Gala. Their newer material recently received placements in MTV's Awkward, Finding Carter and Becoming Us. They were signed to Sleepless Records (July Talk, Allie X) last year and their new album All Lit Up is the latest progression in their sound - a tight fusion of top 40 pop and modern indie-rock that makes a perfect soundtrack for dancing till the sun comes up.

4. TNB Theatre School’s Senior Musical Theatre Students present Mary Poppins May 5-7
Theatre New Brunswick concludes its 2015-2016 season with a production of the award-winning hit musical, Mary Poppins, May 5-7, at the Fredericton Playhouse. This is the classic musical story of a nanny who forever changes the lives of one London family.
The Senior Musical Theatre class is made up of students grades 9-12 and are the most advanced and accomplished performers from TNB Theatre School’s 300+ students. Many of them have been with the theatre school since entering the public school system. Each Senior Musical Theatre production marks the end of Theatre New Brunswick’s season and continues to be one of the most popular productions of the year. For this production, students are given the company’s full support as a way of providing the most professional theatre experience for both the audience and the performers. This year’s students will be supported by professional lighting, projection, set and wardrobe designers, in addition to a full orchestra.
Mary Poppins runs May 5-7 at The Fredericton Playhouse at 7:30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2pm. Tickets available at the Fredericton Playhouse box office or online at www.tnb.nb.ca, and are $27 for adults and $15 for students.

5. The Multicultural Association of Fredericton presents Scholarship Fundraiser: Dance & Delicacies May 6
The Multicultural Association of Fredericton presents the Newcomer Scholarship Fundraiser, Dance & Delicacies, on Friday, May 6 at 8pm in the UNB SUB. It includes Music by Jukebox Live, international desserts, a silent auction, and a cash bar.

6. Lansdowne House Concerts presents Christina Martin May 6
Lansdowne House Concerts presents award winning singer-songwriter, Christina Martin on Friday, May 6. Doors opens at 7:15pm and the concert begins at 8pm. The venue is located at 41 River Front Way (Directions upon request), and tickets are $25 at the door.
Born in Florida, living in NS, and raised in New Brunswick, Christina's musical journey includes four albums since her first release in 2002. Her career has taken her to Germany and the UK, from where she has cultivated a substantial following. She has earned multiple East Coast and Music Nova Scotia Award nominations, had songs placed in television programs and even performed for Queen Elizabeth II in Ottawa. She was nominated for four awards at this year’s ECMAs and won Pop Recording of the Year. At our concert she will be performing with her amazingly talented husband and musical producer, Dale Murray. Christina's song writing is impeccable, her music is vivid and full of sincerity, and her vocals are dreamy and infectious.

7. Fredericton Society of Artists to Hold Annual Spring Exhibition May 6 -15
Fredericton Society of Artists will be holding their Annual Spring Exhibition show and sale at the Provincial Archives Faculty on the UNB Campus from May 6 to May 15. The Fredericton Society of Artists is currently made up of approximately 60 visual artists. The show will feature over 100 works of art featuring a variety of media, topics and styles.
The official opening of the show is Friday, May 6, starting at 5pm with a reception ending at 8pm. The general public is invited to attend. This is an opportunity to enjoy an interesting art show, and also do some shopping. Art makes a wonderful gift.

8. Roomies at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre May 7

Travel back to 1968 with this award winning coming of age story about two unlikely roommates: David, a clean cut scholarly student living with a disability and Nick, a rebel with only one cause: himself. On the surface it may seem these two have nothing in common, except they have just become "roomies".
Featuring music from the era and an award winning story from Newfoundland playwright Paul David Power, Roomies captures those rare times when the most unlikely person changes how we think about ourselves and our lives forever. Originally debuting in Newfoundland, Roomies returns as part of an Atlantic Region Tour produced by Moncton theatre company, Hubcity Theatre.

9. Cineplex’s National Theatre Live presents Shakespeare’s The Adventures of Pericles May 7
A storm at sea brings love into the life of Pericles, Prince of Tyre, and another snatches it away. This magical production of Shakespeare’s epic tale is a delight for the eye and ear. Filled with music and brilliant spectacle, it follows a fairy-tale hero on a miraculous journey to one of literature’s most poignant reunions. Evan Buliung gives a sweeping performance, portraying the dashing young prince with verve and swagger, and taking him into his elder years with sorrowful tenderness. “Moving and fun from beginning to end,” it is a story rarely told, and one you won’t soon forget.
The live performance is presented on Saturday, May 7 at 12:55pm. There will be an encore presentation on Thursday, May 12 at 7pm.

11. Christina Couture at Grimross Brewing Co. May 7
This is one show not to be missed! Christa Couture brings her award-winning songs to the Grimross Brewing Co. on May 7. Caitlin & Calum kick off the show at 7:45pm, followed by Christina Couture at 8:30pm. There is a suggested donation of $10.
For most musicians, the break-up album is the quintessential songwriter cliché – bringing with it the burden to eke out some kind of originality from an oversubscribed muse. But for award-winning indie artist Christa Couture, whose first three albums reflected on her teenage battle with cancer, the loss of her left leg to the disease, and the deaths of both of her young children under separate circumstances; the opportunity to write songs about such ordinary heartache seemed like a welcome reprieve.
On the Steve Dawson-produced Long Time Leaving, Christa offers a truly unique take on the topic thanks in part to a long and complex relationship with grief that’s given her rare insight into its nuances. It’s a mostly upbeat album filled with sweet soaring hooks, whimsical melodies, clever word-play and Christa’s trademark sweet, quirky vocals.
Winner of the 2008 Canadian Aboriginal Music Award for Best Folk Acoustic Album, Christa Couture has built a reputation for transforming tragedy into musical triumph, capturing tiny snapshots of grief and elevating each to a unique work of art – sometimes desolate but more often uplifting in its encapsulation of a single treasured memory or moment of hope.

Her 2012 album The Living Record, made Best-of-the-Year lists at CBC Music, Radio Regent and the Georgia Straight and prompted Straight critic Alex Varty to describe Christa as “criminally under-rated.” Its predecessor, The Wedding Singer and the Undertaker made the Top 10 at CBC Radio 3 and went to #1 on the National Aboriginal Music Countdown. PopMatters likened Christa’s voice to that of Amy Rigby and praised her skill in writing an album about loss that “does not feel like the aural equivalent of ambulance chasing.”

12. Finding Lucy Jarvis: Do you have a lost treasure on your wall? May 7
The art of Lucy Jarvis is as unforgettable as her life. Vibrant and bold, her work captures the places and people she was passionate about. Jarvis was committed to an art “of the people,” often giving away or undervaluing her work. As a result, her sketches and paintings can be found in homes across Atlantic Canada, passed down through families who may have no clue what treasures they possess.
Members of the public are invited to bring suspected Jarvis works to the UNB Art Centre, located at 9 Bailey Drive, on May 7 at 1pm for a free evaluation by a panel of experts, including Lucy Jarvis: Even Stones Have Life author Roslyn Rosenfeld and members of the artist’s family. 13. Saints & Sinners Burlesque Information Meeting May 8
Saints and Sinners Burlesque will have an information meeting on May 8 at 7pm, in Brian Mulroney Hall on the STU campus (corner of Windsor and Montgomery Streets). At this meeting we will discuss theme, songs, expectations, and answer any questions that you might have about what we do. If you think that you might be interested then this is a great chance to get a feel for it and ask questions. If you can't make it but are interested, please message Amanda Steeves via Facebook before the day of the meeting.

14. Fredericton Ladies Choir Spring Concert May 10
The annual spring concert by the Fredericton Ladies Choir will be held on Tuesday, May 10 at 7:30pm at St. Dunstan’s Church. The 80-voice choir is directed by Peter Steeves with Julie Maston as accompanist.
The program will include popular, sacred, and classical selections centering on themes of joy, peace, and love. Among the composers are Mozart, Handel, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Carole King. Special guests will be the Senior Handbell Choir from Brunswick Street Baptist Church. The group, which was formed last September, is also under the direction of Peter Steeves.
Tickets for the concert are $15 each and may be purchased from choir members, at Westminster Books and at the door. They make a great Mother’s Day gift!
The Fredericton Ladies Choir was formed in 2008 and presents two concerts each year, one in the spring and another for the Christmas season. A portion of the proceeds from each concert is donated to local charities. Kidney Cancer Canada will receive support from this year’s spring concert. Back to top.
15. Symphony New Brunswick presents Pathos and Passion at the Playhouse May 10
Symphony New Brunswick winds up the season with a bit of both the exotic and the spectacular. Singing the exotic Les nuits d’été, written by Hector Berlioz is mezzo soprano Andrea Ludwig, whom many of the audience will recognize from her performance in the Messiah with SNB in 2013. This lush work is a perfect fit for the end of the season and the definitive affirmation of our recalcitrant spring. Les nuits d'été (Summer Nights), Op. 7, is a song cycle by the French composer Hector Berlioz, based on six poems by Théophile Gautier. The theme of the work is the progress of love, from youthful innocence to loss and finally renewal.

After the intermission, the big orchestra returns to the stage for, perhaps the most famous of all Beethoven’s works and definitely the most heroic, Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Opus 55, originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, who at that time was considered more of a hero than a despot.
This concert takes place at the Fredericton Playhouse on May 10 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $40 for adults, $10 for children, and are available at the Playhouse Box Office. Back to top.
16. Daniel Poliquin in Fredericton May 11
Explore a forgotten chapter of New Brunswick's past and discover an unforgettable story when Daniel Poliquin reads from his critically acclaimed novel, The Angel's Jig, at the Fredericton Public Library, located at 12 Carleton Street, on May 11 at 7pm.
Poliquin’s picaresque novel revisits an all-but-forgotten era, when orphaned children and the elderly poor were auctioned into a form of indentured servitude. Narrated through the eyes and ears of an unforgettable protagonist, The Angel’s Jig is a joyous meditation on identity and the unpredictable voyage of existence which Quill & Quire has hailed as, “a thoroughly enjoyable odyssey about a memorable, yet perplexing character and a shocking custom that has all but disappeared from our collective memory.”

17. Literary Festival Planning Meeting at the Fredericton Public Library May 11
The City of Fredericton’s Cultural Laureate, Ian LeTourneau, invites you to a public meeting for the planning of a full-fledged literary festival for the city. The meeting will take place at the Fredericton Public Library’s Chickadee Meeting Room on May 11 from 7-9pm. The meeting will aim to get an advisory board together and begin planning for a small scale inaugural festival this fall. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome! Back to top.
18. Music Runs Though It proudly presents Tim Walker at Corked Wine Bar May 12
On Thursday, May 12 at 8pm Corked Wine Bar presents a night of music by Tim Walker. Tickets are $10 and are available at Corked Wine Bar and Tony's Music Box.
Tim can be found singing and playing guitar with Grand Theft Bus, Heat and Lights, Pretty in Pink, or playing bass for Mayors. Tim's solo sets are folky and poppy affairs including select tracks from these projects alongside works in progress and fun covers. He is currently working on songs for new records by both Grand Theft Bus and Heat and Lights and eagerly awaits the release of a new Mayors' album this spring.

Looking back in order to look ahead. Drawing from memories to open up new possibilities. That, in many respects, sums up Colour Film, the new identity of Hamilton, Ontario's Matthew de Zoete. Having released three albums of dreamy folk-pop under his own name, de Zoete (pronounced “duh-ZOO-tuh”) has channeled the various sounds and influences from those records into Super 8, a six-song EP that reintroduces his melodic gifts and poignant lyricism.

The overarching concept behind Colour Film grew out of a song that de Zoete wrote by that name which became the title track of his last album from 2012. It explored his fascination with his family’s history but also embodied his idea of songs as “little films,” wherein a combination of characters, stories, and emotions create a visual element in the listener’s mind. The six songs on Super 8 achieve de Zoete’s ends brilliantly, with his voice and the shimmering arrangements often echoing the glorious melancholy of Elliott Smith, Badly Drawn Boy, and the Pernice Brothers. 21. Kill Chicago and Royal Tusk at The Capital Complex May 13 On Friday, May 13 the Capital Complex presents Kill Chicago with Royal Tusk. Doors open at 8pm and the show begins at 9pm. The cost of this show is $8 at the door. Our hometown pals Kill Chicago are just coming off a stint at the 2016 ECMA's and maybe just maybe have some new tunes to share. Touring their new album DealBreaker, Royal Tusk will be bringing Rock N Roll, beards and their loud blue collar charm to The Capital. The Fredericton Pride Committee presents the Espresso Yourself Coffee House May 14 The Fredericton Pride Committee will be hosting a coffee house and silent auction on Saturday, May 14 at 6:30pm at Milda's Pizzas & More, located in the Charlotte Street Art Centre. Guests will be able to browse donated items while listening to talented local artists sing, play music and read poetry. Rainbow pizzas and drinks will be available to purchase from the lovely staff at Milda's Pizzas & More! Admission is $5 and money raised will go toward costs needed during Pride Week, including our sixth annual Parade and Festival. If you are also interested in participating in the 2016 Parade and Festival, applications will be available by request. Pride Week and the events leading up to it are very important to our community. Pride week is the one time of the year when sexual minority groups find visibility in the larger Fredericton community. It is a chance to raise awareness and celebrate our diversity. We understand poetry and song is a venue for sharing your experiences, but this is an all ages event and we would like it to be a safe space for everyone. For that reason, we are asking performers not to share pieces with triggering content. We are talking big trigger issues: violence, suicide, self-harm. Back to top.

Sunday Evening Benefit Concert for the Refugee Sponsorship Fund May 15 Karon Croll (Contralto) and Ruth Nieboer (Piano) will present a concert on Sunday evening, May 15 at 7pm at Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, located at 512 Charlotte Street. They will be performing a variety of musical selections including Opera and Oratorio Arias, French Art songs, and Broadway Show Tunes. Admission is by free will offering with a reception to follow in the church hall. Concert proceeds will go to the Refugee Sponsorship Fund to support our Syrian Family. 25. Bach, a Choir & Cocktails May 17 Please join us on Tuesday, May 17 at the the Playhouse for a wonderful evening of collaboration, music, and dance. Featuring choreography by Igor Dobrovolskiy and music by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada and Choeur Louisbourg, New Brunswick’s sole professional choral group, partner together on a new work choreographed on Bach’s celebrated St. John Passion. This performance will also feature original works including an interpretation of visual artist Suzanne Hill’s newest upcoming exhibit only and a preview of Igor’s ballet on themes of immigration and home scheduled to open in Fall of 2017. There will be a pre-show at 6:30pm. Join us for cocktails as Artistic Director Igor Dobrovolskiy, visual artist Suzanne Hill, poet Anne Compton and Choir Director Monique Richard discuss collaborating between genres. 26. A Jazzy Storytime at the Fredericton Public Library May 18 On Wednesday, May 18 at 6:30pm, everyone is invited to join us for a jazzy story time with a performance by the FHS Jazz Band! This 22 piece ensemble is committed to the preservation of the jazz tradition and exploration of its many forms, from its swing roots to later Latin and rock influences. The group consists of members from grades 9-12 and is under the direction of Mr. Craig Woodcock. The ensemble’s mantra and goal is always to “sign it,” meaning to put an individual stamp on the music while leaving a lasting impression with anyone listening. 27. Blackout Productions & East Coad Awakening present Harbour at The Capital May 19 Blackout Productions and East Coast Awakening presents Harour at the Capital on May 19. The Pop Punk quartet from Toronto, Ontario have been touring the world for over four years, performing over 250 shows in Canada, USA, and Japan. Harbour has shared the stage with Yellowcard, Hedley, State Champs, Anti Flag, Four Year Strong, and many more. The band takes most of their influence from the early 00’s pop punk style, similar to New Found Glory, The Starting Line and MxPx. This show also features Pipe Dreams, Emo/Rock from Charlottetown, PEI; The Wasteland Zombies, Rock from Fredericton; and Toobular, Pop Punk/Indie from Fredericton. Saturday, May 7: Painting Backgrounds for Quilts or Embroideries
Learn to paint using Pebeo setacolor fabric paints on cotton or embroidery fabrics. Create your own fabric for a special landscape, shaded fabric for a flower you wish to appliqué, yardage for a special sky or backgrounds for embroidery. You will learn how to mix colours and apply the paints. Special effects techniques such as sun printing and using salt will also be explored. A demonstration using Derwent Inktense pencils will also be given. Comprehensive notes provided.
Saturday, May 14: Creating Buttons
Can’t find the perfect buttons to set off your newly knit or crocheted creation or your designer sewn outfit? Want to add your own unique finishing touch to fibre art? Come learn to make your own buttons from polymer clay. Mix colours, create pattern and texture, design shapes, etc. as you create original buttons using inexpensive tools. Skills learned can be used in making brooches and other jewellery – your imagination is the only limit. The kit fee is $6.

Saturday, May 21: Techniques in Applique
Perfect the use of fusible webs and the satin stitch and then move on to learn methods that look like hand applique. You will learn to use both freezer paper and dressmaker’s interfacing and to attach invisibly using the blind stitch. You will go home with a sampler of applique techniques.

4. Faces & Florals Drawing Workshop with Marie Fox May 15 Spend a day immersed in the glory of spring flowers, portraiture and creativity. This workshop will demonstrate drawing techniques of light and shade, still life, form and composition suitable for beginners and advanced artists alike. Students will be working from real blooms and will create a detailed collage/classical portrait. Marie Fox studied art history at NSCAD University, but is primarily a self-taught painter. Working with traditional techniques and contemporary subject matter, the focus of her work is on the figurative and the ethereal. She has exhibited paintings with many well-known Atlantic Canadian art galleries, including the Beaverbrook Art Gallery (2015 Studio Watch: Emerging Artist Series). Marie works and teaches from her studio in downtown Fredericton. There is a course fee of $75 which includes all supplies. This workshop takes place on Sunday May 15t at Robert Dugas Hair and Makeup, located at 461 King Street from 10am-4:30pm.

2. Studio Space Available in the Charlotte Street Art Centre Beginning May 1 we have a studio space for rent at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. We are looking to fill the space with an artist that would love to be a part of our arts community and share the space with our three other amazing artists. Chris Harding, Guy Vezina, and Laurie Winter have their studios in this space as well. The room number is 103, and is on the main level of the Arts Centre as soon as you walk in. 3. Call for Submissions for the Fredericton Region Museum’s Artist in Residence Program The Fredericton Region Museum’s Artist in Residence program seeks to inspire artists with Fredericton’s diverse and rich heritage. Art inspired by history can enhance connections between the museum and the public through its various forms. The program is open to local artists, working in a visual media, whose work relates to Fredericton’s history. The artist studio will be located in a main floor gallery. During the three or six weeks of residency, the artist(s) will be expected to work in the studio allowing visitors access to the creative process. They will be expected to provide at least one of the following: a public lecture, a program geared towards the youth community, or a workshop. They will also agree to participate in media interviews intended to promote the program. Artists are to provide their own working materials and assist with promoting the residency. The Fredericton Region Museum will provide a gallery in a heritage building (approximately 9.5’ x 14.6’) to be converted into a studio, artist stipend, and advertising, as well as opportunities to display and sell their existing artwork in the gallery during their residency. Essential Qualifications The Artist-in-Residence will be a practicing artist with a portfolio of published or exhibited works. Applications are accepted from visual artists and other creative individuals. Dates of Residency Residencies are for July and August, with two Artists in Residence, who will be on site for three consecutive weeks each within the eight weeks, or one artist for six weeks. The exact dates within the residency are flexible and will be detailed in a signed agreement. Hours of Residency A minimum of four hours a day and five days each week, preferably in the afternoons plus community events, such as Canada Day and during the museum open house event if it falls on a residency week.

Short statement of interest and a description of work to be carried out during the residency. The applicant should also describe why they wish to do the residency, and what particular perspective they will bring to the program
Indication of public access programming to be offered by the artist, for the public at large and for young people
Indication of which three weeks the artist preferred for the residency
Two artists may make a joint application, each submitting visuals and other information, if they are prepared to share the stipend and working space. Applications must be received by June 6 for summer residencies. Submit proposals to the museum office by June 1, 2016. Back to top.

Recovery Art Show, an exhibition of artworks on the theme of recovery from addiction and mental illness. The purpose of the show is to increase public awareness, spark discussion, teach, and change perceptions through art that depicts people’s experience of recovery. Hosted in partnership with the Fredericton Public Library, the exhibit will be held from November 1-29, 2016, in the library’s gallery. October 14, 2016, is the deadline for submissions.
