seeding a Generation of Music lovers

Celebrating the Westchester Philharmonic one night, I found myself breaking bread with Jamie Bernstein, daughter of the late and great composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Jamie is a narrator, writer and broadcaster, all of which reflect her lifetime devotion to music and her family legacy. We remi-nisced about the Young People’s concerts led by Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in the Sixties and Seventies. Jamie attended all of them…even rollicked backstage. I told her how when I was a kid, we took the Long Island Railroad from the Rockaway’s to Penn Station, then hopped on a subway up to Carnegie Hall … almost an hour and a half trek to get an injection of classi-cal music that my mother had made a part of our cultural regimen. Although we twisted and turned a lot in our seats, we did get a lasting appreciation of music.

Although to his credit Leonard Bernstein made the Young People’s concerts a household name, they officially began as far back as 1914. These were expanded exponentially in 1924 under the baton of Ernest Schelling. It was Bernstein, however, who grew the concerts to an audience of millions by having them televised from Lincoln Center and syndicated to 40 countries. Bernstein’s love of music, his theatrical style, his skill at translating the music into words, inspired a generation of music lovers. Remembering the Young People’s concerts made me think that the world needs another Bernstein and another generation of music lovers. Perhaps that’s Jamie Bernstein.

new executive Director at the rye arts Center

The Rye Arts Center (RAC) has appointed Meg Rodriguez as its new Executive Director. Rodriguez was most recently Director of Outreach and Custom Marketing Programs at BFFL, Co., but she is not new to RAC – she has served on its board for a decade, including time on its execu-tive and gallery committees and as Chair of its Membership Committee. As a Rye resident, she is also active in her local community. Rodriguez succeeds Helen Gates, who an-nounced her retirement in February.

Call for Photos extended: westchester through the Decades

On its 50th anniversary, ArtsWestchester readies itself for the next half-century by planning to commemorate milestones and memorable moments from the past five decades. Partnering with The Journal News, the organization

will present Through the Decades: Picturing 50 Years in Westchester, an exhibition of photographs that capture Westchester’s most memorable events since 1965. ArtsWestchester is asking for both professional and hobbyist photographers to submit pictures that record memorable moments to be considered for inclusion in the exhibition. The extended deadline for submissions is July 24. For guidelines, and to submit photos, visit: artsw.org/decades.

new Director appointed at Hudson Valley writers Center

The Hudson Valley Writers Center has announced the appointment of Jewel Kinch-Thomas as its new Executive Director. Kinch-Thomas brings to the Center years of experience as a nonprofit administrator. She structured and operated the Riverside Theatre at the historic Riverside Church in New York City, acted as Interim Executive Director at Harlem Arts Alliance and as an arts consultant and producer for many local Westchester organizations. She says: “I am thrilled to be joining an organization that nurtures writers of all levels and backgrounds, as it brings power and inspiration of the written word to Westchester and beyond.”

Irvington town Hall theater Commissions second season of reading seriesThe Irvington Town Hall Theater will commission a second season of its “Stage Door” reading series which, this year, will focus on works from Westchester and Rockland County residents. The organization is cur-rently calling for submissions to be considered in the series. This season will include three plays, beginning in October. Interested playwrights are encouraged to submit works with small casts that can be read in 90 minutes on stage. The chosen writers will have the opportunity to cast their works, hear them read aloud in front of an audience and get feedback in a Q&A after the reading. Full steaM ahead: an arts and business Partnership ContinuesRegeneron Pharmaceuticals is in the business of creative science; ArtsWestchester is in the business of creative arts. Their partnership on the 2014 exhibition STEAM: STEM + Arts explored both the arts and sci-ences as pathways to creativity and innovation. Continuing to strengthen this partnership, the two have joined forces once again: ArtsWestchester is installing artwork in Regeneron’s newly built Genetic Center, which is inspired by science and technology. Work by Westchester-area artists will be positioned in key locations in the lobby of the state-of-the-art facility and will remain on exhibit until 2016.

First niagara supports artswestchester with $50k DonationRobert Cerminaro, Senior Vice President Market Executive for the Tri-State Region of First Niagara recently helped to celebrate ArtsWestchester’s 50th anniversary with its Board President Froma Benerofe, to whom he presented a $50,000 contribution to support the organization’s cultural programs and services. Cerminaro recently was elected to the ArtsWestchester board.

susan Manspeizer at Hammond Museum The Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden presents a solo exhibition of the work of Pound Ridge artist Susan Manspeizer from July 24 through September 12. The colorful bent-wood sculptures in Facets center on the stages of growth and maturation in the lives of women. With childhood, motherhood, aging and loss among the stages of life explored in the show, Manspeizer captures fleeting, sorrowful and joyous moments all in perfect balance with one another. The sculptures, layered, fragile and vibrant, reflect the nuances and transformations that many women experience throughout their lives. An opening reception takes place on July 11 from 1-3pm. study the understudy at lyndhurst All the world’s a stage this month when the M&M Performing Arts Company, Inc. pres-ents The Understudy in the Carriage House Theatre at Lyndhurst. The witty comedy by Theresa Rebeck casts the spotlight on a theater production’s hidden gem: the under-study. The play takes a fictional behind-the-scenes look at the Broadway premiere for an undiscovered Kafka masterpiece. All the while, egos, personal conflict and money-hungry pro-ducers threaten the fate of the show’s success. The Understudy, directed by Larry Schneider, runs on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from July 11 through 26. A special opening night performance will take place on July 10. exploring lyrics as Poetry This July, Hudson Valley Writers Center explores Lyrics as Poetry by examining the connection between music and the poetic form. In an interactive presentation on July 24, Toni Blackman will discuss the music and culture of hip-hop by challenging stigmas that are often associated with this genre. As a passionate advocate of improvisation, Blackman has shared the stage with both literary legends like Lucille Clifton and hip-hop artists like Mos Def. On the evening of July 31, award-winning jazz writer and broadcast journalist Greg Thomas looks at “jazz vocalese” as a poetic form. Vocalese presents lyrics that are sung with the melody of the jazz composition it accompanies, allowing the music to drive the meaning and movements of the songs. The event features works from NEA Jazz Master Jon Hendricks. For more info, visit: writerscenter.org.

Revisiting Arcadia with artswestchester In its summer exhibi-tion, ArtsWestchester takes a nostalgic look at the enduring artistic tradition of depicting landscapes, which have been celebrated in different forms for centuries. The fifteen exhibiting artists in Re-visiting Arcadia: Con-temporary Landscapes each allow their viewers to consider his or her personal con-nection to nature. By immersing themselves in the beauty and dark-ness of the natural worlds presented in the works, visitors are encouraged to consider that which they are surrounded by but may not fully appreciate on a daily basis. A wide range of mediums, techniques and styles are explored in the show, from traditional Hudson River School inspirations to conceptual photography and video installations. Revisiting Arcadia is on view from July 16 through August 29. An opening reception will take place on July 15 from 6-9pm. For more info, visit: artsw.org/arcadia.

enVy: One sin, seven storiesHudson River Museum takes a look at Envy as part of a cultural collaboration between members of the Fairfield Westchester Muse-um Alliance, in which each organization examines one of the Seven Deadly Sins. In a solo exhibition by multimedia artist Adrien Broom, envy is interpreted in photographs and life-sized scenes from fairy tales, depicting stories of passion, evil and redemp-tion. Three-dimensional “stage sets” bring these fairy tale worlds to life; a photographic portrait gallery presents favorite and less-er-known characters; and a “web of envy” engulfs visitors with objects that typically signify beauty, wealth and power, such as pieces of gold and mirrors. The universal formula of fairy tales introduces a character’s errors followed by an emerging moral lesson. This, like Envy, causes its readers to reflect on themselves as they are and as they should be. Other Fairfield Westchester Mu-seum Alliance members are Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Katonah Museum of Art, Neuberger Museum of Art and Wave Hill. shakespeare in the Park

Following the success of last year’s perfor-mance of Shakespeare in the Park at Turnure Park, the City of White Plains and ArtsWest-chester team up to present the White Plains Performing Arts Center production of Much Ado About Nothing on July 15 and 16 at 7pm. This classic family-friendly Shake-spearean comedy follows a set of characters whose broken hearts, tumultuous love and pro-pensity for gossip lead to a hilarious mess of mistaken identities and chaos. “This performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing will continue our tradition of providing new and exciting programming to the residents of our great city,” says White Plains Mayor Tom Roach. The production is free and open to the public. Picnicking on the lawn is encouraged and refreshments will be available for sale. The performances are sponsored by Peckham Industries.
