Are you still late arriving

for school? Please come

to the Breakfast Club and

never be late again!

Starting your day on time

is so important.

SCHOOL NEWS

Burnaby School District and the

Ministry of Education are in the

process of drafting guidelines for

all schools so that in the event of

any emergency schools are

prepared to respond and recover

quickly.

During any emergency, our first

priority is the safety of our

students and staff. In order to

provide an effective response to

any community emergency, the

Burnaby School District are

developing emergency response

plans and practice drills that are

conducted in our schools,

throughout the year. Our

emergency plans are developed

and adopted in consultation with

the City of Burnaby, Burnaby

RCMP and the Province of BC.

Practice helps students and staff

prepare for a variety of possible

emergency situations. The

exercises and drills also help to

minimize fear so they can respond

quickly during a real emergency.

The types of emergency

procedures schools are currently

required to practice include: fire,

earthquake, hold and

secure/shelter in place and

lockdown.

Evacuation/Fire

Requires students and staff to

leave the school and go to a

designated safe area, outside and

away from the building.

Earthquake

Teach “Drop, Cover, Hold On,”

schools are encouraged to

practise portions of their

emergency plan, such as

simulating an evacuation.

Hold and Secure

Is used in response to security

issues or threats outside of the

school, usually a community

incident in proximity to the

school. During a Hold and Secure

all entrance doors to the school

are locked and no one is

permitted in or out of the

building. Students and staff can

continue learning activities in

classrooms, with supervised

access to hallways and common

areas. If students and staff are

outdoors, they are directed back

into the building.

Shelter in Place

Is used during environmental

emergency, severe storm,

chemical spills or airborne

hazards (smoke due to a large fire

etc). Students and staff retreat to

safe buildings to seek shelter.

Students and staff who are

outdoors come into the school

and doors and windows are shut.

Lockdown

Is used in response to security

issues directly impacting the

school. During a Lockdown, doors

with-in the school are locked.

Students and staff are to remain

in their locked classrooms or

designated areas, hidden from

view. Only law enforcement are

permitted to enter the building

during a Lockdown. If students

and staff are outdoors they do not

return to the school, but evacuate

to a designated area.

If you have any questions about

our emergency procedures, feel

free to contact myself, Pauline

McKay, at 604.296.9011 ext.

627001 or

[email protected].

Douglas Road Neighbourhood Care will also begin

accepting registrations in February for the coming

2018/2019 school year. Douglas Road

Neighbourhood Care is a licensed

school-age childcare centre in our

school. A school-age program for

grade 1 to 7 students is available

on a part-time and full-time basis. The hours of operations

are 7:00am to 6:00pm Monday - Friday, including Pro-D

days, Winter Break and Spring Break. For more

information please visit the daycare in Room 105 and

speak to Naaz Samji, Daycare Supervisor, or call

604.298.7094.

Inclement Weather – It is

important that your children come

to school appropriately dressed

for the various weather

conditions, whether it is rain,

snow or freezing temperature. Please send your child to

school with a winter jacket, hat, mittens and boots. All

children are expected to go outside for fresh air and

exercise at recess and during the noon hour. If your child

is too ill to go outside, they are probably not well enough

to come to school. It is important that they stay home to

avoid spreading their germs to other children.

Student Safety – The beginning of

a new year and a new term is

always an opportune time to

review safety precautions. We ask

for your assistance in stressing the

following points in regard to your child’s safety:

That a regular safe route, which is taken to and from

school, has been established by you and your child.

Students must report home after school to

parents/caregivers before going to visit or play with

friends, unless prearranged with parent or guardian.

Students are to walk to and from school with other

children.

Students are to abide by the directions of the

Crossing Guards when crossing Canada Way and

Douglas Road.

Car Safety – A reminder to parents to please drop off

and pick up your children in the church parking lot across

from the school. Parents may also park their cars there

when coming into the school. We ask parents to please

use the crosswalk when crossing Kincaid Street. PLEASE

DO NOT USE THE STAFF PARKING LOT especially before

and after school as the traffic congestion creates an

unsafe situation for students and staff alike. Thank you for

helping us keep all our children safe.

PAC NEWS

The Parent Advisory Committee is formally opening positions for training

and orientation:

Treasurer | Accounting/Bookkeeping background helpful

Lunch Coordinator | Munch-a-Lunch Master Admin. Duties include:

o Manage the Munch online account

o Order lunches from vendors

o Distribute or organize distribution on lunch days

o This person must be the Treasurer of the P.A.C.

Co-chairperson | coordinates events such as Walkathon, Carnival,

and the set-up of P.A.C. meetings

This is a great opportunity to build a relationship with members of your community. As many of you experienced

at our recent Multi-Cultural Dinner on January 25th, we are a school diverse in cultures and traditions and living

together in harmony in a peaceful nation. It is important as parents to ensure our children have the best

educational experience as possible.

Esther Bernardi, current Treasurer and Lunch Coordinator will be retiring from the P.A.C. in June after 14 years

of volunteering at Douglas Road School. If you are a parent currently staying home with younger children, this

opportunity is an excellent way to stay current in technology and volunteer work on a Parent Advisory

Committee plus this looks good on a resume. You are only required to be on the P.A.C. for one school year,

however, most of our members have been serving much longer because they enjoy being a part of their

children’s school.

Esther is willing to set aside time to train and orient new parents in these positions. Please contact Esther:

[email protected] or (604) 616-4959.

If these positions cannot be filled the Munch-a-lunch program may be cancelled or reduced next year to one

lunch per month. This lunch program has made the school $8,464.00 to date. This money as well as other major

fundraisers pay for many things your children enjoy throughout the year, such as computers and technology,

field trip transportation, musical instruments, dance classes, tennis lessons, soccer lessons, etc…

In the 2016/2017 school year we reached our goal of $30,000 for computer technology and equipment. Our

school motto “Together we Soar” describes our community.

We endeavor to do our best to continue this tradition of dedication. Please share your special talents with us and

this special community that is Douglas Road.

To learn more about what the P.A.C. does please visit the school website at www.douglas.sd41.bc.ca, go to the

PARENTS tab and see the MINUTES OF MEETING and CONSTITUTION. You will find a very detailed breakdown of

financial statements and important school events and how our committee functions.

In closing, thank you all for your support in all we do and for sharing this experience with us.

With dedication and service, Douglas Road School P.A.C.
