English Language
About the course
English Language is the study of texts that surround us
each and every day, and the functions, purposes and
hidden meanings of the language that we encounter.
Studying English Language will ensure that you will never
look at a piece of text in the same way again. You will
be encouraged to pick apart texts and explore a range
of linguistic issues, such as why men and women speak
differently, why we abbreviate in text messages andhow adverts are designed to persuade without you even
realising it
The AS course aims to provide you with a comprehensive
and intensive understanding of linguistic concepts, and
will introduce to a range of texts, from newspaper articles
to political speeches, even recipes and fairytales. You will
also have the chance to produce two of your own texts.
At A2, you will consolidate your knowledge of the English
language, by exploring how the uses and meanings of
words have changed over time, and how we acquire
language in the first place. You will also complete your owninvestigation of language in an area of your choice.
