Hobart, tHe capital city of beautiful tasmania, is the venue for ascilite’s (australasian society for computers in learning in tertiary education) 28th annual conference. Hosted by the university of tasmania, ascilite 2011 will address many important questions of relevance to the tertiary education community.

shifts in the political, economic and social landscape are changing the demands placed upon the tertiary education sector. there are opportunities and challenges in ensuring students are provided with equitable experiences and in ensuring staff and students are supported and engaged. What are the implications of these changing demands? How will these demands change the ways in which we use technology?

an aim of ascilite 2011 is to facilitate, through the lens of technology, discussion and collaboration amongst those with primary responsibility for teaching and the design and development of resources, and those with primary responsibility for the management and strategic direction of learning and teaching. ascilite 2011 has three sub-themes.

Equity of experienceHow do we ensure all students receive an equitable experience? How do we ensure learning opportunities are accessible so that students can select from a range of opportunities those that meet their needs, wants and expectations?

EngagementHow do we create an engaging learning and teaching environment, for both students and staff, in the light of agendas such as increasing participation, a focus on retention and changing funding models? What support mechanisms are needed? How best can we make the most of the experiences students bring to our institutions?

Evidence-based practiceHow do we achieve a balance between exploration and innovation and ensuring our discipline integrates the literature and other evidence-based approaches into our projects? How do we look to the future whilst not forgetting the past?

this document provides you with all the information required for you to register to attend ascilite 2011, we hope you can join us in Hobart for what promises to be an outstanding conference.

Welcome to Hobartthe island state of tasmania has been chosen as the venue for the 2011 ascilite conference. there are so many things that make tasmania unique. nature, history, some of the best beer and wine available in australia to compliment fine food served in an easy relaxed atmosphere – just some of the attractions that this wonderful state has to offer.

When you visit us for this conference you will find it is a city of warm welcomes and friendly smiles. Hobart is a capital city that is an intriguing blend of all of those elements: heritage and lifestyle, scenery and vibrant culture. it is warm sandstone, bright spinnakers on the water, fish punts at the docks, the slap of halyards on masts, coffee under the striped sun umbrellas of salamanca, an occasional frosting of snow on mt Wellington, bush tracks and birdsong. Hobart’s history is marked with controversial events that have shaped the city’s cultural fabric. it’s a city of bustling markets, fun, festivals and entertainment, and of fine restaurants. Salamanca Markets: Saturday in Hobart is the day for the world famous salamanca markets. Wander the brightly coloured stalls of art, crafts, retro clothing, food, produce and some of the finest woodwork in australia. salamanca markets are open from 8am every saturday. check it out at www.salamanca.com.au.
