Next steps:

Campus Visit: May 20 The TEC will host an optional campus visit for interested ASFM 11th & 12th graders on Wednesday, May 20 from

11:45am - 5:00pm. (This is a half-day

afternoon.) The online sign-up form will open on Monday, May 4th. Students attending the visit must sign up in advance, and must ride the bus to and from the TEC campus.

Other Contacts:

Exámenes de Ubicación: May 25-28 Students planning to attend the TEC de Monterrey are required to take the exámenes de ubicación before entering.

• 5 exams: Spanish, Math, Physics, Computers, & TOEFL.

• The first four exams will be offered at ASFM after school during review week - online sign-up begins May 4th. You must take the TOEFL at the TEC (or submit official TOEFL iBT scores, if you took it in the last 2 years).

• If you do not pass an exam on the first try, you may try again at the TEC campus over the summer. If you do not pass after two attempts, you must take the remedial course for that subject in the fall.

• For study guides to help you prepare for the exams, go to http://sitios.itesm.mx/va/calidadacademica/ubicacion.htm

For other universities: If you are planning to apply to other universities in Mexico, we are happy to assist you with those as well! Please feel free to email or stop by for an office visit with Ms. Loring or Ms. Monica Martinez (counseling secretary). We will do our best to provide any documents or assistance that we can.

Please keep in mind that final kardexes/transcripts must be submitted to your university before you begin classes. However, we will not release these documents to universities until ALL graduation requirements have

been met and your record is clear. This includes all courses passed, fee payments made, CSL hours completed, etc.

SPRING 2015 COLLEGE NOTES

For Seniors Who Applied to Universities Outside Mexico

• Choose one college where you were accepted,

and place your deposit. No “double deposits” allowed. (SERIOUSLY! You’ll lose your spot!)

If you need help deciding, Ms. Loring is happy to “talk it through” with you.

• Did you get waitlisted at any colleges? Would you choose them over the college where you are depositing? If so, be sure to tell them you want to

stay on the waitlist… and

check with Ms. Loring about what you should do next.

• Reply to every offer of admission. If a college

accepted you, but you decided to go elsewhere, you need to thank them for the opportunity, but nicely let them know you won’t be coming.

• Make sure your immunizations are up-to-date.

Some will require more than one injection, and they may need to be spaced apart by a couple of months. Don’t wait until the last minute.

• Carefully and promptly follow the college’s

instructions for getting your visa, housing, etc.

Frank Bruni’s op-ed piece from the New York Times, “How to Survive the College Admissions Madness.”

1

• Check college portals and/or websites to find out when you can expect to hear back from

each of your colleges.

• Keep Naviance up-to-date as your admissions

decisions roll in. Click on the “edit” icon and update the results for each application.

• Be patient, especially if you need to compare

financial aid packages. Try to wait until all of your colleges have responded with admissions decisions and aid packages before you “get your heart set” on one school.

• BE CONSIDERATE OF

OTHERS as results come in.

You may have exciting news to share, but remember that a classmate might be feeling devastated… sometimes even about the same school! It’s okay to be excited, but try to think about how someone who didn’t get in might be feeling.

What should I be doing now?

Have you properly thanked the teacher(s)

who wrote your letter(s) of recommendation?

Once all your decisions are in…

Please update Naviance!

Don’t forget to keep Naviance up-to-date with all of the results of your

college applications. Thank you!

Just So You Know…

COLLEGE NOTES SPRING 2015

Ms. Loring will be out of the office during the week after Semana Santa, April 13-17, for the “C.O.W.S. Tour,” (that’s Counselors Observing

Wisconsin Schools – the U. of Wisconsin at Madison, Ripon College,

Beloit College, Lawrence University, and Marquette University).

Urgent emails will be answered – all others will need to wait until April 20!

Just Say “NO” to Senioritis!

I get it. Really, I do. But trust me…

you do NOT want to be the kid who didn’t graduate, or lost their offer of

admission from a college because your grades went down substantially.

Please, don’t be that kid.

Remember how I told you all those times?

There’s one last thing I want to tell you.

Well, now I want to say

because YOU make me love what I do.

Thank you for letting me into your life for a little while…

Thanks for letting me get to know you, and letting me help you make that big decision about what to do next with your life.

Really. Thanks. I hope you’ll keep in touch!

Ms. Loring
