Dear Residents,Welcome to the October Edition.

We’re very pleased to be able to bring you a fabulous piece of family history of a well-known Ashdown Forest resident, Sir Freddie Sowrey.

With pumpkin season upon us, see our recipe for a good excuse to bake up a treat for the family - or for yourself even.

After we published the Open Hands article last month we received this feedback from Stephen Maughan who runs the charity: ‘Just wanted to say thanks for your support and the article. I already got a cheque in the post last week with a donation from a reader who wanted to help us with the daycare centre!’. So please drop us a line if you’re a community group or local charity who needs promotion or indeed an individual doing something to support charity.

Hopefully you can find the services and products that you need in these pages; please remember to support local businesses when you can.

All the best for a good October.

Groombridge’s Hero,

Will BayleyIt was wonderful to see so many people from the Ashdown Forest area up at the ExCel supporting Will during both his singles matches and the team event. Although disappointed on the day with his performance in the final when he lost to Jochen Wollmert, everyone is so very proud of him winning a silver medal! Of course the semi-final that he played has been well documented on TV when he beat ukranian Maxym Nikolenko and went on to jump the court barriers and leapt into the arms of his manager gorazd Vecko; it has been dubbed the best winning celebration! Will went on to beat Jochen in his singles match in the team event and subsequently the gB team defeated germany to take a bronze medal in the Class 6-8 team event. groombridge are so proud that the post Office has decorated it’s postbox in silver!

GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME

“Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the

rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex

Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios.

People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.

Having recently moved and set up a new clock workshop in the heart of the historic town of East grinstead, Tally talks to John Carpenter, an Antiquarian Horologist and a Craft Member of the British Horological Institute about the ins and outs of restoration and repair of antique clocks:

What does antique clock repair entail?Clocks suffer from general wear and tear, they get dirty and the oil dries out. Any broken or damaged parts will generally need to be made. New wheels are cut and fitted. Dials can be resilvered or painted using traditional methods, brass work and spandrels cleaned, polished and lacquered. painted dials re-touched or fully restored depending on condition.

What is your background? After attending the 2 year BHI Training course, I worked for Aubrey Brockelhurst, a well-established dealer in fine antique clocks. It was there that my education in the repair and restoration was completed. In 1971 I formed an antique clock sales and restoration business, The Clock Clinic in putney. As the manager I ran the workshop and built up the business to be successful and well respected until the 1980s when I moved to the country.

What is the most rewarding part of your profession?I am often brought clocks that are over 200 years old and are in a sad state so I especially enjoy the clients genuine reaction once they have seen their fully restored clock ticking away again. For more information you can contact John Carpenter on 01342 458475 or email [email protected] or you can visit www.antiqueclockrestore.co.uk

An Autumn Walk?

Broadstone Amble Distance: 1.8 miles/3kmA varied, way-marked walk that starts from the Ashdown Forest Centre.

1.8 miles/3km

On leaving the Forest Centre site, turn left immediately at waymarker and walk downhill parallel to an earth bank and ditchon the left.

The bank and ditch date from, or soon after, 1693 when half of thecommon land of the Forest, originally 5,000 hectares, was sold bythe Crown. Now woodland, the land on the other side was turnedover to the raising of rabbits, hence its name of Broadstone Warren.Warrens were mounds of soil about 200 metres long and 7 metreswide.

The large beech trees testify to their former use as boundary markerson the edge of the Forest. Such trees, as they age, are very proneto dropping large branches without warning!

After about 150m, at way marker 2 , turn right and follow thepath as it emerges from the trees onto the open heath. Continuefor 400m, noting on the left a line of Scots pines that mark thesite of a quarry.

This quarry is one of many on the Forest made for road building. InWorld War Two a V1 rocket – commonly called a ‘doodlebug’ –crashed here one night in June 1944. Military activity has long beena feature of the Forest. Most takes place now in the Ministry ofDefence training area at nearby Pippingford but sometimes BroadstoneHeath is used for navigation exercises.

In the past people with common rights on the Forest, commoners, used to set the heaths alight in order to encourage early spring growthof vegetation for their livestock. A big fire went through this area in2000. Uncontrolled fires can be very destructive to wildlife but so-called ‘controlled burns’, using rides to curb their spread, can be animportant part of management. Other management activities includebracken mowing and the control of woodland expanding onto the heath.

At the next way marker 3 , turn left down abroad ride and follow it to the bottom of theslope.

In summer Broadstone Heath is home tocharacteristic breeding birds such as Dartfordwarbler, nightjar, stonechat and tree pipit. The

Forest’s 1400 hectares of heath hold the largest populations in Sussexof all these species. Surveys funded by Defra’s Higher LevelStewardship environmental scheme (that supports the Conservators’management of the Forest’s heathlands) have shown that there areplenty of reptiles: the common (or viviparous) lizard, slow worm, grass snake and adder. One survey technique is to lay metal sheetson the ground and to count reptiles underneath that are attracted bythe warmth, especially in cool but sunny conditions.

Small mammals are relatively scarce on the open heath so the mainprey of adders is probably lizards. When surprised by dogs runningthrough the heather, adders will bite in self-defence, sometimes withserious consequences. Keeping dogs under control (which is requiredby Forest bye-law anyway) will leave the snakes in peace!

Heathland plants like round-leaved sundew, bog asphodel and bogcotton are common in the wetter areas. Recent years have seenconsiderable efforts by Forest staff to rid Broadstone Heath of invasiverhododendron. Hopefully little or none escapes their attention!

At the bottom, just before a stream, the path turns right at waymarker and enters a patch of woodland. Cross two bridgesand follow the ride as it climbs uphill through more heath.

Over to the left are the fairways of the Royal Ashdown Forest GolfClub. Its two courses are renowned for having banks of heather

Autumn is a beautiful time of year on the forest. Need an excuse to get out and enjoy it? Take the walk below and enjoy…

Over to the left are the fairways of the royal Ashdown Forest golf Club. Its two courses are renowned for having banks of heather rather than the usual sand bunkers. There is open access over the courses but the public needs to heed the golfers.

Follow the ride to the top of the hill where it bears left to reach a bench, then bears right through the trees at way marker. Townsend’s car park and the ridge road now lie ahead. At the way marker turn right and follow the gradually ascending ride as it runs parallel to the road. After about 400m Linton’s car park is up the slope on the left.

Linton’s car park, named after a former Forest ranger, is the start for a walk into Tabell ghyll on the other side of the road.

Continue on the gradually ascending ride for 800m and head towards the Forest Centre.

On the left of the ride is the Millennium Clump, made up of Scots pines transplanted in 2000 from elsewhere on the Forest by the Conservators – a modern equivalent of the clumps that grace several hill-tops on the Forest.

Henry Osbourne the commoner who’s grazed his sheep on the forest for many years has requested that people walking dogs in the grazing area act responsibly. Dog attacks on his sheep are becoming more frequent, with 16 incidents logged so far this year - 6 sheep have been killed by dogs. please be aware that dogs must be kept under control at all times on the forest. If you pull into a car park where sheep are grazing please put your dog on a lead before you let him out of the car. And put dogs on leads when horse riders approach and when you’re likely to meet sheep or cattle. A code of conduct for dog walkers can be viewed at: www.ashdownforest.org. please report any sheep worrying incidents on 01342 822846. Thank you.

I wouldn’t like to tempt fate by mentioning the warm, dry spell of weather we are enjoying but it would seem it may last… well maybe till next week! With our ongoing series of events comes 1st November Fungi day and also Childrens’ camp building and then 3rd November the Ashdown Forest Wood Turners exhibition. Of course it is all free and we can guarantee the forest will look fantastic in the Autumn sunshine.

Mike Yates, Ashdown Forest ranger

1.75 miles/3km

From Linton’s car park cross the road (with care) into Ridgecar park (summer only). Walk out of the rear past a seat ontoa grass path and in about 50m turn left onto a ride. Remain onthis gently descending ride, ignoring another that bears offright, for about 400m.

On both left and right are linear quarries, now filled with scrub and trees. Suchquarries dot the Forest landscape andprovided stone for roads. Typical heathlandbirds such as nightjar, stonechat, tree pipitand woodlark usually breed in this area andthe ride edges in particular are one of thebest places on the Forest (indeed in Sussex)to see, in May, the yellow flowers of thesmall spiny shrub, petty whin.

The ride bears left, then right through a break in the quarriesand continues descending for 400m to a metalled drive (SandyLane) . On the left is a bowling green and ahead are thecricket pitch and pavilion of Coleman’s Hatch Cricket Club.

On the hill-top in the distance is Gills Lap Clump, the Galleons Lapof the Winnie-the-Pooh books. One old name for the Clump was TheCamel’s Hump, from the shape formed by the silhouettes of its pinetrees. In the 1920s, when the picture (left) was taken, there werevery few trees on the surrounding slopes, just open heathland.

Cross the drive and walk to the right of the cricket pitch. Wherethe ride divides, bear right, leaving the pitch, and bear rightat the next divide after 300m . The ride descends more steeplyand swings right and downhill into woodland and to a bridgeover a stream .

This area is known as Tabell Ghyll. Itswoodland is most unusual for the publicpart of the Forest with its many largetrees, especially beech, and severalhectares of planted sweet chestnutcoppice. The area was sold off from thecommon land of the Forest in 1693 andonly ‘returned’ during World War Two inexchange for the compulsory purchaseof land elsewhere for military reasons. In the map of 1931 (below) the heavilywooded Ghyll is in marked contrast to the heath to the north of thestream – a reflection of different land use over 250 years.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back.

Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”.

She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her

kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality.

Local History NotesTHE SOWREYS

Sir Freddie Sowrey is a well-known resident of the Ashdown Forest area, here is an extract from the book about his family, THE SOWREYS, by Air Commodore Graham Pitchfork.

Since the formation of the royal Air Force in 1918, there is one family - the Sowreys - that is unrivalled for the length of its unbroken service and the diversity of appointments filled by the six family members and the part they played in the rich history of the service.

three brothers, John, Fred and William served in

the First World War with distinction, before playing

an important role as the rAF struggled for its

existence in the difficult early years after the great

War and later during the inter-war period. Such is

the variety of the Sowrey’s experiences that there

is little of note in the rAF’s history that they were

not involved in.

Freddie Sowrey of the second generation, joined

the rAF straight from school in 1940 and trained

as a pilot in Canada before returning to England to

fly Mustang fighters in the tactical reconnaissance

role. After the war he commanded a Meteor

fighter squadron at Biggin Hill and a Javelin night

fighter squadron. He went on to fill a number of

senior appointments until his final appointment

in Ankara, Turkey where he was the uk Military

representative to the Central Treaty Organisation.

During his retirement Sir Freddie and his wife Anne

bought Home Farm in Heron’s ghyll, just south of

Crowborough. The farm carried rights of common

on Ashdown Forest and Sir Freddie was elected

by his fellow commoners to serve on the Board of

Conservators which he did for 15 years.

ZEPPELIN HUNTERSWhat became known as ‘The great Airship Offensive of 1916’ commenced at the end of July. Amongst the raiders were the first of the new Super ‘Zeppelins’, a larger more powerful airship capable of carrying a maximum bomb load of 9,250 lb. This era would end with Fred Sowrey, William robinson and a handful of others becoming national heroes.

On the night of 2/3 September the germans launched the biggest airship raid of the war. William robinson, whose Lewis guns were armed with the new Brock and pomeroy ammunition, which included tracer, had taken off from Sutton’s Farm to patrol between that landing ground and Joyce green at 10,000 feet. He was coming to the end of his patrol when he saw an airship caught by two searchlights to the south-east of London. He climbed to 13,000 feet and headed to cut off the departing airship but he lost sight of it as it entered cloud. He headed north to return to Sutton’s Farm and after fifteen minutes he came across the Army Shutte Lanz S.L.11 airship. He made two attacks with his Brock and pomeroy bullets but saw no effect. With his final drum, he concentrated his fire on the rear of the Zeppelin and this time he saw a red glow start. Very quickly,

the whole of the rear part was ablaze and he had to manoeuvre violently to avoid the blazing Zeppelin as it fell.

The effects of this raid were enormous on both sides. It was the first time a Zeppelin had been destroyed in the air by machine-gun fire and the loss of L.Z.11 had an overwhelming impact on the german airship service. The effect on the morale of the British people was immense. The event had been witnessed by tens of thousands of people and the huge conflagration was visible for over fifty miles. After many months of suffering the menace and bombing of the apparently invulnerable airship, the British population’s feelings exploded in a national wave of near hysterical relief.

robinson immediately became a national hero and within days was awarded the Victoria Cross.

undeterred by this loss the germans launched their next raid on the night of 23/24 September when 11 naval airships headed for England. They included four of the latest ‘Super Zeppelins’ all heading for London after crossing the Belgian coast. Zeppelin L33 launched an attack on east London during which it suffered a direct hit from an anti-aircraft battery near Bow. In

the meantime, four pilots of 39 Squadron had taken off, including Fred Sowrey who set up a patrol near Joyce green.

Fred had been airborne for almost two hours when he saw the L.33 just after it had been hit, as did his New Zealand friend, Lieutenant Alfred Brandon. Both lost sight of it as it flew out of the searchlight but Brandon found it again and prepared to attack. The Zeppelin had been hit badly and was losing height through a loss of hydrogen gas. Brandon fired a drum of ammunition into the airship but the second drum jammed and he was unable to bring it down. However, despite valiant attempts by the airship’s commander, Aloys

Bocker, and his crew, the airship grounded north of the Blackwater estuary and burnt out. The crew were captured.

In the meantime, peterson, in command of Zeppelin L.32, approached London from the south-east and dropped his bombs. He was picked up by the searchlights and all three pilots of 39 Squadron spotted him. Fred was flying the most southerly patrol and after a twenty-five minute chase at 13,000 feet, he was ready to attack with his single Lewis gun.

Brandon, who was still airborne, saw the engagement and the tracers, later reporting that the Zeppelin was being ‘hosed with a stream of fire’. The L.32 came down at South green near Billericay with the loss of peterson and his twenty-two man crew. The engagement had been witnessed from the ground by thousands of Londoners including robinson and other pilots of B Flight at Sutton’s Farm who all shouted encouragement. When he landed, Fred was concerned that the wreckage might have fallen on houses but a visit to the site put his mind at rest.

The successful pilots were mobbed by local villagers as they headed into the countryside to inspect the wreckage where they again received a hero’s welcome. Although it was still the early hours of the morning, the lane leading to the crash site was completely

blocked by transport of every type and by streams of pedestrians, many having travelled from London. When Fred and his colleagues tried to get within the half-mile cordon they were told they must have a pass. After a long explanation, they were allowed to drive into the field to see the wreckage. The huge, gaunt metal construction of the Zeppelin attracted crowds of people for days before the german crew were buried with full military honours. For this action, Fred was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

The loss of L.32 and L.33 on this amazing night proved to be a turning point in the Zeppelin offensive against England. Following on robinson’s achievement, the events proved beyond doubt the great value of the aeroplane in the scheme for home defence. Furthermore, even germany’s most ardent airship supporters started to doubt the effectiveness of the strategic bombing offensive that would later be dubbed ‘The First Blitz’.

The premise is that the end justifies the means. This has long been bandied about in the field of war. 2000 years ago Livy said, ‘to those to whom war is necessary, it is just, ’ HISTOrY 10 BC. This proverb further expresses that courtship entails the use of any means to become victorious as the ‘force of love’ can not easily be controlled.

The link between love and fighting for a kingdom was already established as a saying by 1606:

An old saw hath bin, Faith’s breach for love and kingdoms is not sin. (Marston, THE FAWN)

And around 1605 in DON QuIxOTE by Cervantes, which had a strong influence at the time he writes:

Love and war are the same thing, and stratagems and policy are as allowable in the one as in the other.

The wording we are familiar with today appeared 2 centuries later: ‘All’s fair in love and war’ presents a convenient phrase to justify possibly dubious conduct.

The English Language ‘All’s fair in love and war’

1. keep electrical, computer and appliance cords tangle-free: Neatly fold the cord and pass it through a toilet paper tube before plugging in. put plastic-film over the tube to strengthen if you wish.

2. keep weeds out of paving cracks: Sprinkle handfuls of bicarb of soda onto the concrete and simply sweep into the cracks. The added sodium makes it far less hospitable to dandelions and their friends.

The son of a barber/wig-maker, Turner was born near Covent garden, London. He received little formal education and his only sister died aged 7 years, when he was just 10years old. His artistic career started at an early age, selling to his father’s customers. His first painting sold when he was only 12 years old. Having gained an apprenticeship after receiving a £100 bequest (nowadays approximately £10,000) from one of his father’s customers who had seen his work in his father’s shop, Turner was then accepted into the royal Academy of Art. He was just 14 years old. Whilst at the Academy he developed his talent for landscapes.

By the age of 26 Turner was regarded as an established British artist. Inspired by the French artist Claude Lorrain, he became “a painter of light.”

Much of his private life was kept secret, allegedly having two daughters by a widow named Sarah Danby; but he never married.

He dedicated his whole life to his art. unlike many other artists, he was successful throughout the whole of his career. Constantly sought after, he amassed a fortune through his commissions. He had suffered bouts of illness throughout his adult life particularly in the winter months. In 1796, Turner’s usually prolific output decreased dramatically. This may have been due to exhaustion and stress. Although he could be indifferent to family matters, he may have been affected by the health of his mother. At home she was suffering from mental illness and violent tempers. In 1848 he contracted cholera from an epidemic that was sweeping the country.

Turner travelled extensively throughout Europe, including germany, France, Switzerland and Italy. Venice inspired him to produce some of his greatest work. These trips provided him with a wealth of creative material to use in his art. He would also walk vast distances to find the ideal situation

to paint – sometimes up to 25 miles in a day.

Turner was a businessman as much as an artist. A prolific painter throughout a long career, he also had a mind to save money where he could. For instance he used his father as an assistant to make and prepare his canvases.

Turner did have his fair share of critics, who were more conservative in their approach to painting. Turner wanted to convey expression and spirit rather than merely form and features. Critics of his depiction of sea said it “looks like soap and chalk” and of his sky they described it as “a heap of marble mountains.” Sir george Beaumont (one of his more outspoken opponents) criticised his use of colour and lack of “finish” with regard to his paintings. In response, Turner painted “Narcissus and Echo” in a “finished” manner just to prove that he could do it if he wanted to. He wanted to show that he painted the way he did through choice not due to lack of ability.

As he got older he developed a reputation of being a scruffy, introverted eccentric at times almost reclusive. He could be arrogant, verging on rude, to his clients and apparently this attitude became worse after he was appointed as a Academician. Despite his poor health he continued to work to almost the end of his life before passing away at his home in Chelsea. He was buried as a national hero at St pauls Cathedral and left a fortune of more than £140,000. Five years after his death the nation received his works.

His will was subject to litigation for many years. He left 19,000 watercolours, drawings and oils to the British nation. This was in the form of the “Turner Bequest. His career lasted more than 60 years.

Article by Ian Morgan of Ashurst.

Ian Morgan is available for art talks. Please contact him at [email protected].

The Slave Ship 1840Turner was inspired to paint this after reading The History and Abolition of the Slave trade by Thomas Clarkson. In 1781 133 slaves were thrown overboard The Zong on the orders of Captain Luke Collingwood, in order for the insurance pay-ments to be collected. It was alleged that there was insufficient water on board to last them to their destination in Jamaica. However, this was later disproved when the ship arrived in dock with 420 imperial gallons of water still on board.

As autumn arrives and the evenings start to draw in it’s time to celebrate the great harvests around us. We’re surrounded by fantastic farms, all of whom grow amazing vegetables and fruits, and now is the time of the squash and pumpkin.

This is a simple, but amazing tasting pie to set off a great roast dinner.

Shortcrust pastry:250g flour125 butter25g fine caster sugar9 tbsp water

Filling:1 pumpkin or butternut squash(at least 1lb of flesh)3 eggs100g muscovado sugar375 ml evaporated milk2 tablespoons plain flour½ tsp of grated nutmeg½ tsp ground ginger½ tsp ground cinnamon

1. preheat the oven to 190C (or 375F).

2. peel, de-seed and cut up the pumpkin and/or butternut squash and weigh out 1lb of the flesh. roast the flesh as this caramalises the sugars and adds extra flavour to the pie. pop it in for 20 – 25 minutes, take out and puree in blender.

3. Sweet shortcrust pastry: You can buy it or quickly make. put flour and butter in bowl and mix with your hands until it is like breadcrumbs, add the sugar and slowly add the water until it is the right consistency, roll it into a ball and cover with clingfilm and put it in the fridge.

4. To make the filling mix 3 eggs, 100g muscovado sugar, 2 tablespoons of plain flour, half teaspoon of grated nutmeg, ground ginger and ground cinnamon. put the pumpkin puree into the bowl and gently mix together and then slowly add the evaporated milk. put aside.

5. roll the pastry out large enough to fill a greased 23cm x 2.5cm dish. gently lower the pastry into the dish, making sure it covers it well, then cut around the dish with a knife or pinch together with your fingers to give the pie a good finish. pour filling into the pie, brush the pastry with some milk, this will give it a lovely brown colour.

6. pop it into the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, check half-way through, if necessary put foil around the pastry edges to stop it burning. You are looking for the filling to set.

Fabulous with cream and a dusting of icing sugar!

The Ashdown Forest Living has grown from strength to strength with the majority of our customers continually renewing

because our advertising has proven results.

“I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ when I heard about it. The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km driveway! I’ve had great results advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.”Matt Merrell,

Weight problems are often triggered by puberty, pregnancy, menopause or simply ageing. In addition medication, stress, change in lifestyle, bad eating or drinking habits can also play a major part with weight problems. The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme addresses these issues resulting in clients losing weight at a rate which is very motivating.

Key points of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme

Expected average weight loss of clients, 10-14lbs a monthEasy to followNo pills, diet shakes etc.One-to-one personalised support

The most popular aspects of the programme are the quick weight loss, easy to stick to (clients constantly remark that they don’t feel hungry or have cravings) and the one-to-one support which is available 7 days a week.

•••

“No previous diets had ever worked – I have an under-active thyroid, which didn’t help. Rachel encouraged us all the way and her advice and suggestions were really easy to follow – we didn’t find ourselves hungry or getting cravings.

The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme very quickly re-educated

our diets but it wasn’t at all difficult to keep to. One happy side

effect was Andrew‘s indigestion problems disappearing, while my blood pressure improved. We reached our target weights in less than five months but far more than that has been the way it has changed our lives and how we feel about ourselves.

A very big personal thank you to Rachel for turning us around.”
