FROM GALAS TO GATHERINGS, WHAT TO WEAR?

SUSAN REINHARDT - MOTHER, HUMORIST AND FASHIONISTA - SHOPS FOR HOLIDAY FASHIONS By Susan Reinhardt

For many people this time of year, invitations to parties,

balls, dinners and glamorous galas will stuff their mailboxes

and offer that age-old challenge: What do I wear?

This is the start of a whirlwind of social events, and for certain

women, it means getting down to some serious business.

Shopping. Looking good doesn’t come easy. Nor is it always

pain and frustration free. With a bit of time and lots of caffeine

and cash, shopping and morphing from ordinary to dynamite

is defi nitely doable. Even though I may not get invited to lots

of parties, with the exception of elementary school functions,

I decided to hit a few chic boutiques to see what it would

take to go from frumpy to fabulous.

One never knows when her prince–or Shrek–might beckon.

GLORIOUS GOWNSSince this season offers up loads of charity balls and elegant

functions, owning a drop-dead gorgeous evening gown

is a must for most. Even Maya Angelou said as much in

one of her poems.

I wanted to slip into the most luxurious creations this town

has to offer, and Asheville is well known for its fi ne shopping.

I chose Brooke Priddy’s designs at Ship to Shore for a Red

Carpet look, even though what little carpet I own is beige.

As soon as I tried Brooke’s fl owing fabrics and designs,

cuts Marc Jacobs or Donatella Versace would envy,

I fl oated on a cloud of wishful thinking. The dresses are

beautiful, and what makes it best is they’re comfortable

enough to sleep in. The one I chose (and put on Santa’s list)

was what most boutique owners are calling the hottest color

of the holiday season – purple. Brooke said, bringing out half

a dozen dresses from the racks. “We’re seeing a lot

of lavender and purples, reds and some whites.”

A second gown I salivated over was fi re-hydrant red with

a plunging back. Brooke joked and named the dress the

“Happy Fanny,” because it shows off a fi ne derriere. It’s not

for those like me who will soon need a bra for their back fat.

Continued on page 20...

Pretty in purple: Susan wears a Brooke Priddy

hand-pieced gown of stretch satin in jewel tones

of purple ($375, Ship to Shore); Franchi woven box

in silver ($110, Jazzy Giraffe); Silver satin pumps

by Accessoire ($265, Jazzy Giraffe). Bill Lehnert

necklace of 20 carat morganite set in 14-kt. white

gold with natural rubies ($7,400, Alexander & Lehnert

Fine Jewelry). Michael Barringer mixed-media canvas

“Millions of Pearls in the Mist of the Waterfall”

(Blue Spiral 1 Gallery).

Other parties on the hit list for fall and winter

are those after-work affairs. So how does one

go straight from work to a fairly fancy gathering without

much fuss or bother?

At Bellagio Everyday on Biltmore Avenue, I found

the perfect outfi t. Typically, I’m not the pants type,

but Babette’s designs couldn’t be more appropriate

for offi ce-to-posh-type parties. Pairing Babette’s crinkled

tunic top to work with boots and leggings, one could

with little effort, trade the leggings for the wide,

broomstick pants and be ready for an evening out.

All I need now is an invitation or two and a fairy

Godmother. Oh, and some killer accessories.

Quintessential Asheville, day and night: Susan’s daytime look features a Babette bark-pleated

shirt ($296, Bellagio Everyday); Spanks black ribbed tights;

Leather belt ($210, Bellagio Everyday); Bettye Muller boots

($595, Constance Boutique); Tutela messenger bag

($104, Bellagio Everyday). Jewelry by Terry Logan

(necklace $320; earrings $166; Bellagio Everyday).

Evening look is accomplished with a Babette broomstick

pant ($274, Bellagio Everyday) and a quirky and cute

Anemone bag ($136, Bellagio Everyday). Scott Upton

mixed-media canvases, “Serenity” and “Saltwater”

(Blue Spiral 1 Gallery).

Lasers: Growing up, I worshipped the sun and endured bouts of acne. As a result, my skin is uneven, sporting lines and a few acne scars. After a single laser treatment with Dr. Laura Ellis at the Asheville Vein Center & Medical Spa, I saw improvements within a few days.

Ellis used a CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Rejuvenation machine on my face, which is designed to reduce wrinkles, pores, acne scars and sun damage.

Down time: About a week.

Results: If one takes care of her skin and uses sunscreen religiously, it should last years.

Cost: Varies.

“LIKE A ONE DAY FACE LIFT.”

HOLIDAY GLOWBy Susan Reinhardt, Photos by Katie Damien

Women seek perfect skin the way archeologists hunt

for elusive bones. We want to glow. We long for

the Fountain of Youth or for doctors to snap the clock back

fi ve to 10 years. The good news is there’s a lot more available

today that is less invasive and expensive than a full-face lift.

Skin treatments have come a long way and many offer little

down time and fantastic results.

Here are ways to shed a few years and layers of skin prior to party time.

1 Microdermabrasion: Removes the top layer of skin

to reveal brighter, pinker skin. The procedure can

be done on the face, hands and décolleté.

Down time: None.

Cost: About $110.

2 Light chemical peels using glycolic acid,

often called the “Lunch Hour” peel.

What it will do: “It removes that top layer of skin

and rejuvenates the face,” said Linda Reed, medical skin

care specialist at the Plastic Surgery Center. “It makes

the skin smoother and softer.” As a bonus, various masks

such as those with Vitamin C products, are applied

for healthier and fi rmer skin and are included with

the treatments, Reed said.

If one wants to go full blast with the clock reversal, the following

procedures are where science has been most kind to women

in the last few years. First and foremost in the arsenal of age

eradication are two treatments yielding dramatic and nearly

instant results. The risks include some bruising, swelling

or mild discomfort.

1 Botox: This is an inactive form of the botulism virus

the FDA approved for paralyzing muscles in parts

of the face in 2005. Botox is an injectable, which

removes frown lines, brow furrows and crow’s feet.

Down time: None, unless one bruises.

Results: Almost immediate.

Cost: Between $500 and $600 at most places.

2 Fillers: Lately the FDA has approved many fi llers that

last much longer than collagen. Some of the best are

Restylane, Juvaderm, Radiesse and Evolence -

all dermal fi llers, many made with hyaluronic acid.

These injectables plump out deeper wrinkles, furrows

and lines, especially the nasolabial folds, those that

appear from the nose to the corners of the mouth.

Down time: None, unless one bruises.

Results: Almost immediate.

Cost: Between $500 and $600 at most places.

Linda Reed recommends that if a woman is gung-ho

on wowing the party crowd, she should go all out and

splurge with the skin treatments such as microdermabrasion,

lasers or light chemical peels glycolic acid along with

Botox and the fi llers. “This gives them a smoother look,

and almost a complete change in their overall appearance,”

Reed said. It’s like a one-day facelift.

SCENES BEHIND THE SCENEWhat does it take to produce a fashion shoot? The perfect storm of talented people, a great location, fabulous clothes…and a very funny and gracious model.

We give special props to E. Scott Thompson, make-up artist and stylist extraordinaire. He single-handedly produced three fabulous hair and make-up looks and rescued us with the perfect earrings for one of Susan’s “glam looks.” Girls, he’s available for weddings and other special occasions, and he’s worth it. Call him. His contact information is in the front of this book.

We can’t forget our friend John Cram, who let us use his gallery, Blue Spiral 1, for the shoot. And we used his boutique, Bellagio Everyday, to store all of our clothes. He and his staff got out of bed very early that day. He even made coffee and put up with the lingering scent of hairspray.

Finally, we thank our model, Susan Reinhardt for being such a good sport. She may look like a model, but she isn’t. With alacrity, she endured hours of bending this way, twirling that way and looking the other way. She was a real pro. Best of all, she kept us entertained and made this fun.
