Patent research on disinfectantformulations in home care & personalcare
The disinfectant market is forecast toreach $14 bn by 2017 at a growthrate of 6%/y according to marketresearch reports. A study conductedon patents concerning disinfectants inconsumer products covering Jan2008 to Mar 2013 has shown thatmany patent applications have beenfiled in the USA, Europe and Asiaover the 5-year period, but the rate offiling did not increase. In contrast, incountries such as Spain, Russia andAustria where the total number ofpatents filed was low, the numbersare rising. This is indicative ofgrowing consumer interest indisinfectants. Filers are predominantlycorporate companies such as Henkel,BASF and Procter & Gamble (P&G),with 363, 342 and 341 patents filed, respectively. This implies potentialtechnology commercialization.Universities in the USA including theUniversity of Columbia and theUniversity of Texas have also soughtprotection for their research. In termsof chemical ingredients, the datashowed that patents on germicidaldisinfectants have a lower share andgrowth compared with patents onantimicrobials, antifungals andantiallergens. The focus is on theaddition of halide compounds, particularly fluorides, as disinfectants.Other patents have claimed the useof azoles, peroxides aminocompounds and others as activeingredients. Most patents filed werefor beauty and personal care followedby fabric care applications.
