ASHRAE Standard
206-2013
Method of Testing for Rating of Multi-Purpose Heat Pumps for Residential Space Conditioning and Water Heating
Wayne Reedy Oak Ridge National Laboratory
2 Presentation name
BACKGROUND
• Development of standard was supported by ORNL as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to facilitate market penetration of multifunction heat pumps.
• In order to achieve an instantly recognizable, authoritative document, a test standard was requested of ASHRAE, which in turn established a Standard Project Committee to develop Standard 206
3 Presentation name
206 applies to electrically powered unitary
heat pump equipment that provides both
space conditioning and water heating
functions, and may include other
functions, such as dehumidification and/or
ventilation.
SCOPE
4 Presentation name
• 206 addresses air-source, water-source, ground water-source, ground-source closed loop, and direct geoexchange equipment.
• It applies to air-source equipment rated below 65,000 Btu/h [19,000 W], and water-source, ground water-source, ground-source closed loop, and direct geoexchange equipment rated below 135,000 Btu/h [40,000 W].
SCOPE
5 Presentation name
• 206 addresses single-capacity, dual-
capacity, and variable-capacity equipment
• Provides for up to 7 modes of equipment
operation
o Space conditioning only
o Dedicated water heating
o Dehumidification+space conditioning
o Dehumidification
o Space conditioning+water heating
o Dehumidification+space
conditioning+water heating
o Dehumidification+water heating
SCOPE
6 Presentation name
• Space conditioning may be heating or
cooling
• Dehumidification may be during
summer or winter
• Dedicated water heating may be during
summer or winter, with the heat source
being either indoor or outdoor
SCOPE
7 Presentation name
• Test procedure covers packaged, split, mini-
split, and triple split equipment configurations
• Refrigerant-to-water HX may be internal or
external to a heat pump section or water
storage tank
• Specifies refrigerant and water line
lengths/configuration for all options
SCOPE

Conditioning and Heat Pump Equipment (Steady-State Performance)
• ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 116Methods of Testing for Rating Seasonal Efficiency of Unitary Air
Conditioners and Heat Pumps
STANDARD 206 IS AN EXTENSION
OF AND CONSISTENT WITH:

• Committee was made up of 15 voting
members, representing manufactures,
testing laboratories, electric utilities, and a
university; AHRI was a non-voting member.
SPC 206 INCLUDED
REPRESENTATION FROM ALL
INDUSTRY SEGMENTS
12 Presentation name
• Water heating load
• Space latent load
• Space sensible load
CALCULATION PROCEDURE IS
A BIN PROCESS BASED ON:
13 Presentation name
206 space cooling design load follows
Standard 116 in setting the total space
cooling load for 10% oversizing relative to
actual unit total capacity at 95°F test point
206 then applies a 0.76 sensible heat factor
to determine the space design sensible
cooling load
SPACE SENSIBLE LOAD
14 Presentation name
The latent cooling load for the combined
appliance in Standard 206 is made up of an
internal latent gain and a ventilation latent gain.
SPACE LATENT LOAD
15 Presentation name
• The water heating load is assumed evenly
distributed over the hours of the year.
• The hot water usage is taken as 243.4
liters/day (64.3 gallons/day) from ASHRAE
118.2-20064, which is the test standard for
standalone residential water heaters.
• Using inlet and outlet water temperatures
from ASHRAE 118.2-20064 of 14.2°C (58°F)
and 57.2°C (135°F) respectively and a water
heater energy factor of 0.90 yields an hourly
water heating load of 496.9 W (1696 Btu/h).
WATER HEATING LOAD
16 Presentation name
• Three performance descriptors are used to
completely describe the performance of the
combined appliance:
o Combined appliance space conditioning
performance for the cooling season;
o Combined appliance space conditioning
performance for the heating season;
o Combined appliance water heating
performance on an annual basis.
• In all cases, the descriptor ends in a subscript
“ca” to designate “combined appliance”.
