Baking Program D. PRAKASH ........ 1 VOL. 1 2010. 11 ISS. 5 Those of us who are interested in baking had a phenomenal opportunity last month. On October 12 th , ASICC sponsored a baking seminar at one of our ASICC member’s homes very close to campus. We had the opportunity to learn from Marie Klingensmith, one of New York’s finest pastry chefs (aka Jonathan and Wendy Evans’ Aunt). This workshop provided an opportunity for us to learn some of the fine arts of baking and at the same time get to know more individuals in the International community at Academia Sinica. The participants were divided into small groups and each person had an opportunity to take part in making a homemade apple pie from scratch. It was a lot of fun working on this project together. While the apple pies were baking, we had the exciting opportunity to learn how to make a personal chocolate cake in just 5 minutes in the microwave. Each of us was given a coffee mug in which we mixed the ingredients for this cake and then later microwaved it in this same mug. Following this we had the opportunity to taste our personal chocolate cakes which were simply delicious. After a time of talking, tasting each others cakes, and sipping on hot drinks, the apple pies were finished baking in the oven. The pies had a lovely appearance and some even had special pastry decorations added to them. Everyone parted with a generous portion of the apple pie they helped bake. The pies were absolutely delicious and much better than any store bought pie in Taipei. Baking Program Academia Sinica is keen to address the specific interests of our international colleagues. By establishing ASICC we hope to offer a dynamic environment and ensure a strong work/life balance. But to find what you'll love, you might need to

pick up a basic Chinese vocabulary fromfriends, since many of the drinks can beprepared in different ways.

Do you want it hot or cold? With or withoutice? – these are easy questions. Regular, half orno added sugar at all - this needs moreexperience. I found that is tea usually betterwith no added sugar (though many locals lovetheir tea sweet), while in case of other drinks itis better to order it regular for the first time andyou can refine it to your taste later. Finally, if you want to explore the Taiwanese drink storevariety, I suggest you get a reusable cup to bringto the store (the most common cup size is700cc) - let's show good example how thisbeautiful island can reduce garbage. Drink stores have proliferated acrossTaiwan lately, they seem to pop up on everycorner. There's a reason for that: Taiwaneselove their drinks and they are really good atmaking them, so there is a huge variety. The traditional shops serve tea - a fewdozen different kinds, almost all locallyproduced. Then there are the casual drinks, which can be almost anything - from cocoato the famous bubble milk tea. These caféscome up with unusual creations on a regularbasis. Finally, there are the shops whichspecialize in fruit drinks. These three typesshould cover almost everyone's preferences.
