그래피티 아트(Graffiti Art)의 화려함과 역동성, 그리고 대중적 친밀도는 거부하기 어렵다. 최근들어

정부와 기업이 그래피티 아트를 이용한 대규모 프로젝트를 기획하는 것도 이러한 그래피티 아트의 특징

때문이 아닐까 한다. <아산 은행나무 아트거리>는 그래피티 아트 전시를 단순한 이벤트가 아닌 공공

예술의 또다른 가능성으로 바라보고 고민하고자 기획되었다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 그래피티라는 원초적

익명성과 거리라는 무대가 주는 대중성이 지닌 공공미술로서의 가치를 좀 더 적극적으로 실험하는

계기가 될 것이다.

<아산 은행나무 아트거리>는 한국과 말레이시아를 대표하는 작가들이 모여 아산의 공공건물을 자신

들만의 색깔로 바꾸려는 시도이다. 일반적인 그래피티 아트의 개별 이미지에서 탈피하여 공동의 주제와

과제를 통해 공통의 목소리를 만들어내었다. 특히 다섯 명의 작가가 빚어낸‘젊음 그리고 아산’이라는

테마는 아산이 품고 있는 새로운 변화 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 이번 <아산 은행

나무 아트거리>는 스트릿 아트(Street Art)가 발현하는 공공성을 실험하는 상징적인 프로젝트가 될 것

이다.

While there are some ideas difficult for us to swallow among the diverse perspectives of Graffiti Art,

its splendor, dynamism and attraction to the public are hard to deny. Popularity appeal is particularly

important from a contemporary viewpoint, reflected in the large-scale projects that are being carried

out jointly by government and enterprises. Graffiti Art is no longer considered as a simple event,

but approached as a part of the Public Art domain. Art on the Street― Asan Made, which is a

project organized by Asan City, looking at Street Art with its potentials as Public Art, will serve as

an opportunity to view graffiti art from new perspectives. Moreover, the popularity appeal provided

by the anonymity of graffiti and the street as the stage will encourage more active experimentation

with the values of Public Art.

Asan Made is an attempt by artists representing Malaysia and Korea to transform public buildings

in Asan into their own unique colors. Breaking away from the strong characteristic images of

conventional Graffiti Art, the artists formed a common voice through joint themes and projects.

Especially, the theme ‘Youth and Asan’ established by the five artists, implies the symbolic meaning

of new change, which is a value to be embraced by the city of Asan. Thus, Asan Made will serve as

a symbolic opportunity to test the possibilities of the Street Art in the public domain.

“Spray paint is a more fundamental medium for me. It can be applied to the canvas in a freer

and wilder form than other materials. Therefore, an individual can unfold new forms of original

space through his spray-skills. I mainly use human figures in order to communicate the face

of modern society in the fastest and easiest way, and recently have used more basic subject

matter, such as plants and other objects of nature.”

The artist’s graffiti work, which began in 1999, contains the artist’s personal story—from changes in

surrounding figures to the changing self portrait. The work is closely linked to contemporary society,

as the artist broadens his world view as he attempts to express society today as he sees it through

spray paint.

“스프레이 페인트는 내게 무엇보다 근원적인 매체이다. 다른 재료보다 자유롭고 와일드(wild)한

형태로 캔버스에 입혀 진다. 때문에 개인이 펼쳐낼 수 있는 원초적인 우주(space)를 스프레이-

스킬(skill)로 새롭게 만들어 낼 수 있다. 현대사회의 얼굴을 가장 쉽고 빠르게 전달하기 위해 인물을

주로 그리며 최근에는 풀과 식물 등 자연의 대상을 활용하고 있다.”

1999년부터 시작된 그래피티 작업은 작가 개인의 스토리를 담고 있다. 변화하는 주변 인물부터 변화

하는 자신의 자화상까지 그 양태는 현대사회와 밀접하게 관계맺고 있다. 작가는 스프레이 페인트로 더

근원적으로 이 사회의 얼굴을 표현하고 이를 통해 자신의 세계관을 넓혀가고 있다.
