InTouch News & information about healthcare simulation and technology enhanced learning

As the national learned body for simulation based-education (SBE), ASPIH strives

to develop new initiatives and promote SBE as a platform for workforce

education and patient safety improvement. A key objective for ASPiH is to drive

improved collaboration and educational standards across the SBE community

and across healthcare education. The Association is therefore launching an

Education Academy to offer carefully selected products and services that

provide benefits to our members and community of practice. These include

some national training programmes in specific areas of SBE and products or

services sourced via our commercial partners and Institutional members.

ASPiH is a not-for-profit

company limited by

guarantee. This means we do not have shareholders and any surplus revenue is

used to support the activities of the Association and to ensure its sustainability.

As ASPiH expands and its commitments increase, further funding is required to

support this. The Academy will generate some extra income from delivering our

own training programmes and by entering into selected co-marketing agree-

ments for commercial or innovative products or services. The ASPiH Executive

committee and/or membership will provide guidance to the Academy on which

products, services and courses we make available to ensure they provide

appropriate benefits to our members and our wider community of practice. Our

courses will not “compete” with those already being delivered but will answer

an unmet need or gap in professional development. They will be delivered by

subject matter experts in a training centre in High Wycombe, Bucks or on site.

The activities of the Academy will be kept separate from those of the main

Association and will be overseen by the Executive committee and external advi-

sors. We look forward to working with all our colleagues to ensure the success

of the Academy and to ensuring the long-term sustainability of ASPiH as the use

of simulation becomes ever more important in healthcare education

Standards Project Update Adoption of the ASPiH Standards Framework for Simulation-based Education is well under-way in many institutions. The availability recently of the Consultation Report to support the standards framework provided a further validation of the methods used to derive the stand-ards and initiated some further comment and input from practitioners. In 2017, we are planning a standards web site to allow further comment and feedback on their adoption and to start the process of developing an accreditation system for SBE. The funding from HEE for the development of the standards in 2016 may not be continued going forward so we are in the process of developing delivery options for how ASPiH can continue this very important work. In common with all standards frameworks, especially ones that are not legally bound to fitness to practice, we recognise the need for continued development of the framework and associated guidance in parallel to the discussions around potential accreditation. The web site will therefore incorporate a discussion and feedback mechanism where we capture com-ments, experiences and suggestions for further iteration so when we meet again at our An-nual conference in November we can discuss additions/modifications for 2018. We will also launch an outline accreditation process based upon the Framework at the Telford confer-ence.

FEATURE

Streamlining course development—

an exciting new platform The development of course and scenario content that meets educational and learning objectives can be time consuming, resource intensive and, to be efficient and effective, requires close communication between authors, faculty and technical staff. There is therefore a need for a structured approach to help make the development of SBE content easier and more efficient. This was recognised by the South West Regional Simulation Network several years ago and, in partnership with specialist healthcare software company TWME8, they developed a platform called iRIS that answers these needs.

iRIS is an on-line simulation authoring platform that uses a comprehensive and structured process to allow the development of high-quality content in line with the ASPiH Standards Framework and broader Health Education England strategies. In addition to enabling collaborative course content development, the software includes a repository where finished courses can be stored for easy delivery and any future content developments or changes can be agreed and recorded, thus ensuring long term quality con-trol. ASPiH became aware of the product via Dr David Grant, Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and Associate Dean for Simulation at Severn Postgraduate Medical Education and Chair of the South West Simulation Network, where he has overseen the implementation of iRIS across the region. Dr Grant has kindly allowed over 150 courses and scenarios developed by the South West Network to be made available to all new users free of charge. ASPiH has entered into a partnership agreement with TWME8 to assist them in further development of the platform and support its dissemination and implementation across our community via the new ASPiH Academy.

UTILITY Higher Education Institutions, Simulation Centres and Simulation Networks can all use iRIS to develop content privately or share content within their networks and with partner organisations. HEE South West have seen time and cost savings by using iRIS to enable intuitive and standardised approaches to course development, streamlining the process and allowing everyone across an institution or network to generate, or just comment on, course content without slowing down the production of the final product. Once a library of ready-to-use and approved courses is generated, all resources, faculty notes and manikin data are available via a single click thus saving technician and set-up time for programme delivery. The content is held in a cloud based environment providing a secure and safe and environment for SBE course content. STANDARDS iRIS we have been able to achieve equity of access to iRIS provides a platform for working to the ASPiH Standards Framework for SBE. By facilitating high-quality educational material and driving educational governance, iRIS can provide a simple and efficient mechanism for ensuring that as courses are designed and developed they are linked to the standards. For example, one of the standards describes the need for a faculty member to oversee programme design and link it to organisational and educational goals and ensure any course is mapped to identified training needs and iRIS makes this a simple and efficient process. All of the relevant ASPiH standards can be mapped to developments undertaken with iRIS and iterations captured in a secure and date stamped document vault, providing evidence of the process and allowing easy capture of delivery outcomes.

CHANGING CULTURE Course generation across the simulation community also suffers from the tensions between ownership, related to income generation, and collaboration. This can sometimes lead to organisations “re-inventing wheels” with the same course being developed from scratch when similar content has been generated elsewhere. One of the key potential benefits of iRIS is the possibility to share developed content across the SBE community. Users have a choice to keep content private if they wish to charge for access as part of their income generation but can also make some or all courses publicly available. ASPiH will be working with the developers and Dr Grant to see if we can use iRIS to help facilitate national training programmes in key areas of patient safety and to ensure SBE is at the centre of improving the quality of healthcare education.

Learning introduces “In practice reports”.

The latest issue of our peer reviewed journal is now available. This includes four in-practice reports that are free to download. These include a fascinating article entitled Online clinical decision support: how it is used at the point-of-care and an exploration looking at Using mobile technology to enhance medi-cal student assessment. These in-practice reports offer a way for simulation practitioners to publicise their work without having to produce a fully peer reviewed paper. Other interesting articles include a video toolkit for in-situ simulation and the Editors Choice paper Performance gaps and improvement plans from a 5-hospital simulation programme for anaesthesiology providers: a retrospective study.

SimTech Days and Technician News Already in 2017 activity across the TECH Regional and National Networks, Champions and individuals has far exceeded previous years with North and South SimTechDays in The Living Lab at the University of Sunderland and in Oxford Brook’s new facility Joel Joffs building in Swindon, followed by a Yorkshire & Humber Clinical Skills Network TECH-themed event in Hull Institute for Learning and Simulation (HILS) All three days were brilliantly received by, in total over 80 delegates, and those attending agreed that the days and the programme content was not only useful to their roles but enhanced by the opportunity to network, gain skills and knowledge and meet like-minded techs. You can follow these activities on the Technician’s ASPiH website page.

All offers of input and support for future events gratefully received – please talk to your Regional TECH Champion and/or Jane Nicklin [email protected].

Professional Registration for simulation technicians and technologists.

Professional registration is a voluntary status that holds people to account for their professional practice and ethical standards. Unlike statutory registration, such as the Health and Care Profes-sions Council registers or the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which regulates the relevant profes-sional, voluntary registration means that individuals are held accountable by their peers and by others in their profession.

ASPiH has gained final approval as a full member organisation of the Science Council and is now the registered professional body for simulation technicians and technologists. Find out how to submit your application to join the professional registers as an RSciTech or RSci Route to Professional Registration.
