There will be times in your life when you feel you are pulled in many
different directions. Always strive to be when you are. If friends
turn their backs on you , know that you never really needed them in
your life way. When people talk about you, know that their small
talk is just an indication of just how important you really are. When
family just does not understand, only time and love will heal the
misunderstanding. When it seems that the only thing you have is a
rope, just tie a knot and hold on until help comes. When despair and
helplessness seem to become your companions, know that help is on
the way. When your enemies have called a meeting and you are the
agenda…know that there is a God who says the “battle is not yours!”
When you look in the mirror and you really do not like what you see,
know that this is simply a temporary state and love is on your side.
When greed and bitter hatred capture your attention, remember our
ancestors who, through the heat of oppression, had a desire and faith
to hang strong! When people tell you what you cannot do, remember
we have a history and a lineage that say we can! When time seems
to beat you up…know that you simply need to stand still and remain
yourself…for you are God’s most beautiful gift!
JANUARYIf you are not on the way, then you are in the way.

They take my kindness for weakness
They take my silence for speechlessness
They call my language slang
They see my confidence as conceit
They see my mistakes as defeat
They consider my success accidental
They minimize my intelligence to “potential”
My questions mean I’m unaware
My advancement is somehow unfair
My praise is preferential treatment
To voice concern is discontentment
To stand up for myself, I’m too apprehensive
I’m deviant if I separate; I’m fake if I assimilate
My character is constantly under attack
Pride for my race makes me “TOO BLACK”

You must give yourself permission to let go of the negative stereotypes
You must give yourself permission to release yourself of self doubt
You must give yourself permission to believe that you are deserving of
all that life has to offer
You must give permission to accept that you were born gifted and you are moving from gifted to greatness
You must give yourself permission to stand-up for what is right
You must give yourself permission to fulfill your visions to be better
than the best
You must give yourself permission to honor yourself at all cost

There was time in my life when I really felt that life consisted of a
destination as oppose a journey. I would function in life as if once
I got to the end of a task there would be a silver lining. Well after
getting a taste of life’s experiences. I have fully recognized that life is
indeed a series of actions. The key to success then is finding ways to
enjoy the process of achieving small victories. In between each victory
there should be a plan, but know that even with the most well thought
out plan there will be some challenges. Some people who try to deter
you from your vision. Still, other people will not understand the vision.
Affiliate yourself with those people who believe in your vision!
APRILI have l ear ned to never be afraid of people who are more powerful than I am...for life is truly mind over matter.

In the quest for happiness we often look to man for assurance, admiration,
and love. What we soon discover is a world of confused people who really
are just like you trying to find their way in the midst of confusion, pain,
frustration and impatience. I realized that true peace is when God, the
universe, and the person are one! I also realized the “Dream” for so many
African Americans has been a nightmare. I he accepted the reality that in
my lifetime I am Black In America and A Ph.D is Still Not Enough! I offer
the following for those who are navigating their way through the academy:
JUNEI never knew what the formula for success, but I know you fail when you do not try.
When It is All Said and Done, The Bottom Line Will Be Results, Anything Else is Rhetoric!
• Commitment to a spiritual force higher than life • Development of a personal vision statement outlining the multiple steps and strategies needed to accomplish your ultimate vision. • Assessment of the technical skills needed to excel in your academic discipline.
• Understanding the social, political, intellectual, academic, and psychological • Realities of african american life in america. • Development of a personal conceptual framework that facilitates the actualization of spiritual balance, mental stability, physical conditioning and internal peace.

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve. He made me weak, that I may obey. I
asked God for health, that I might do greater things. He gave me infirmity, that I might
touch more lives. I asked God for riches, that I might be happy. He gave me poverty that
I might be wise. I asked God for power that I may have the praise of men. He gave me
weakness that I might enjoy life. He gave me everlasting life. Despite my sins, my disobe-
dience, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, like all of us. RICHLY Blessed!
JULYWhat seem to be a great loss or punishment turns out to be a great blessing. I may not know much, but I know through my own experiences that God never closes one door without opening another.

If we live, we will make mistakes. The bottom line is we live fallible lives. The
key is to try to minimize them by always trying to put our best foot forward.
We have to strive to be conscious participants in the game of life. We must
act as if it is impossible to fail, but know that we will!
The first peace, which is most important, is that which comes from within
the souls of men----when we realize our relationship, our oneness with the
universe and all its powers. This is real peace. And all others are but reflections
of this. The second peace is that which is made between two individuals, and
the third peace is that which is made between two nations. But above all we
should understand that we will never know peace until we know God!

There was a time when I truly believed that all one had to do is work hard and one will
live the “American Dream!” The American Dream is one that suggests that working
hard one would have a house on a hill with a white picket fence: one would love apple
pie, American baseball, have a dog named Spot, and have 2.5 kids. Well guess this only
works for people who fit into the dominant paradigm of America! Well, I do not have a
house on a hill, my house is on flat land. I do not have a white picket fence around my
house. I happen to have a gate around my house. I do not like apple pie. I like sweet
potato pie. My dog is not name Spot: my dog is name Malik. I never really knew how
one might have 2.5 kids. So where do I fit in this place called the “American Dream?:
One of the things I try to tell my students regardless of their color or gender is to be
who you are, and if the world turns its back on you, stand tall. Be who you are and if
the society gives up, stand strong and live the life you want for yourself.
SEPTEMBERLife is like an enormous darkened room in which somebody keeps moving the furniture: you cannot tell from moment to moment whether you are about to plop into your favorite easy chair or a potted cactus.

This particular quote is one of my favorites. It is one of my favorites because
I use to be a complete pessimist. If you told me the sky was blue, I would say
no, “it is gray.” If you told me the glass was half full. I would say, “No it is half
empty.” If you told me today is going to be a beautiful day. I would say. “No it
is going to be a very ugly day.” This was my thinking. Now I have found my
life’s purpose. I have found true love in the stillness of the night. I have found
true peace my life’s storms. I know calmness during turbulence, and I know
where to seek strength when I am weak. My list of life’s requests has dwindled
down to three things (1) Health (2) Happiness and (3) Peace of Mind. God
has given me a gift, as he has all of us, and I am determined to use it to trans-
form lives and make a difference! Hold yourself accountable! Clean up your
own yard before trying to tell others what their plans ought to be for their lives.
Always strive to be the change you want to see in other people. Anything short
of this is organized rhetoric!

I dare You To Be Different when all around you seek conformity
I dare you to encounter obstacles when all around you avoid conflict.
I dare you to see the possibilities, when all around you see only the impossible
I dare you to seek new and greater challenges when all around you are content with the
status quo
I dare you to remain steadfast when all around you are quitting
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders
and absurdities no doubt crept in, forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new
day, begin it well…When it is all said and done, The Bottom Line is Results, Anything
Else Is Rhetoric!

First, I give honor and all praise to God, for he has spared my life and gave me a purpose with a plan. I pray everyday that I am in accord with His will! To my parents, the late Levi and Carrie Jones, I send my very special love. Although you are not physically here with me, your love, your teaching, and the beauty of your spirit continue to guide me everyday. My siblings have been the backbone of my existence. It is through their patience, understanding, and guidance; I have been able to mature from a little boy growing up in Newark, New Jersey to a man with a plan. To our ancestors, many of whom died in the middle passage, I say Shem Hotep! To my Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. thank you for setting the benchmark of Achievement for us all! To the Brothers and Sisters of the Academy, thank you for supporting this important and timely calendar of motivational messages.
I thank God for true friends! Ms. Jeanett Castellanous, you, my friend, are God’s special jewel. Where would I be without mentors like Drs. James Scott King, Frank Hale Jr. Brenda Jarmon, Na’im Akbar, Freddie Groomes, Cornel West, Irving P. McPhail, Charles Rankin, Joseph White, Patricia Russell McCloud, Marvelena Hughes and countless others, too numerous to name?
Mere words will never be able to express my sincere appreciation to Mr. Don DuBose my friend, colleague, and graphic designer. This calendar was not only graphically designed by Don DuBose, but inspired by him as well. His energy, insight, persistence, and long hours of work helped to bring this calendar to fruition. I will forever be indebted to Don for his friendship and support of my personal quest to inspire and provide hope for the hopeless.
I sincerely hope that you have found this calendar to be inspiring and useful, in some small way, in your quest for excellence! As you go about your business to constantly improve yourself, and thus improving our communities!
