ASSERTIVENESS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

ABSTRACT

Academic anxiety during education is the most important kind of anxiety in

teen years. It threatens students’ psychological health and affects their efficiency, aptitude, personality formation, and social identity. Academic anxiety is a general expression which refers to a social phobia or social anxiety in which the person falters in their function and cannot confront situations assessing themselves such as examinations. Based on the researcher’s observation to the third semester students of English Department UMM, it was found that anxiety could be seen from the students who were less of assertiveness, particularly for students who studied in the classroom. Therefore, this research aims to know the level of assertiveness of English Department students in UMM.

The research design in this research was descriptive quantitative. The population of the study was 287 English Department students taking Structure III subject which were from 11 classes. From the population, 60 students were chosen as the sample of the study with cluster random sampling applied in it. The collected data were based on questionnaire of Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS).

The results of this study found that among 60 students, there were 34 students (57%) of middle level of assertiveness, 23 students (38%) of high level of assertiveness, 3 students (5%) of low level of assertiveness. Then, the result of the mean score of the assertiveness through the questionnaire was 27. It showed that the students who belonged to the medium level were the most frequent in term the assertiveness. Medium level of assertiveness showed that the English Department students indicated a general discomfort in requesting what students want, difficulty in refusing what they do not want, and hesitation in expressing their feelings. It means there were most assertive behaviors at English Department students which showed that there were many students who had average assertive ability to tell their classmates or lecturers about their needs or ideas clearly and directly in the classroom or in their college activities. This level of assertiveness could help the students understand every lesson taught by their lectures.
