Students are able to design an application problem and explain the application problem in an exemplary fashion in both written and oral means. Score of 3: Students demonstrate a good understanding about how to set up and solve an application program as demonstrated by exams, quizzes, activities, and class discussions. Students are able design an application problem and explain the application problem in a competent fashion in both written Action: The overall student performance in the class during the course of the semester was above average because the class size was small and I was able to monitor each student’s individual progress. The format of the class was one hour lecture and one hour lab. In the lab time, students were encouraged to work in groups to accomplish a task. When students worked in groups, they were supportive of each other and often times the advanced students helped the students who were struggling in the class. However, only 58% of the students score a three or four by using the guess-and-check method. The rest of the students tried to use algebra to solve the problem but they could not write the system of linear equations properly, or they had problems solving the system of linear equations because the equations had decimal. Next time, I will emphasize both methods in class. In order to develop the students’ critical thinking, I will encourage them to solve the problem using algebra and using guess-and-check. I hope this will help them develop a conceptual understanding of the problem. Question #2: Our goal was to have at least 75% of the students score 3 or 4. However, only 66% of the students score a three or four by using a chip abacus. I emphasized this method in class because it’s a visual way to understand addition in different bases. Also, the chip abacus helped students understand the concept of place value and carrying. The rest of the students tried to use other methods but they forgot to carry. Next time, I will modify the chip abacus method by using algebra tiles instead of chip. I hope this will help students understand the concept of place value. Question #3: Our goal was to have at least 75% of the Exam/Test/Quiz - A student has a desk full of quarters and nickels. They were able to successfully set up theproportion and they check their answer. The rest of thestudents had problems setting up the proportion becausethey lack a conceptual understanding of ratios. Othersfailed to check and think critically about their answer. Nexttime, I plan to emphasize cross-multiplication and ratios andproportions. I believe the SLO#1 results decreasedue to the fact that some of the students did not have atextbook and hence they could not practice. Also, duringthe first weeks of the semester some students did not workwell in groups. Next, time I suggest encourage the studentsto buy their books as soon as possible.
