The chart below shows unemployment rates over a 12 month period, across Malta:

Having been largely consistent throughout much o 2008, unemployment in Malta increased

in October 2008, and has continued to do so through the start o 2009.

    Unemployment:

In general the recruitment market is still quite buoyant, particularly in the Inormation,

Communication & Technology (ICT) and Online Gaming sectors. Financial Services recruitment

is surprisingly strong despite the credit crunch, as ironically Malta is now more attractive or

Financial Services rms and unds to relocate to. Banks more recently set up in Malta are

competing aggressively and hiring whereas the long established banks and investment

advisory rms are rarely recruiting, except when replacing sta. Employers usually needing

Hospitality and Manuacturing candidates are reluctant to hire, however candidates in Healthcare

    and Retail/Sales remain in demand.

The past 12 months has presented skills shortages in Healthcare, including Nurses,

Pharmacists and other Health proessionals. Others areas where companies seek highly

specialised skill sets are Online Gaming and E-commerce, where talent or roles such as Media

Buyers, Traders and Business Intelligence Analysts are highly sought. Within non-Gaming ICT,

salaries have rapidly increased due to attrition within Online Gaming. However, as business

conditions become more dicult in iGaming, salaries are stabilising. In 2009 Malta has reverted

to an employer rather than candidate led market.

To attract the right candidates or employers in Malta, eective methods include:

job boards such as reedglobal.com.mt; the Reed candidate database; press advertising or

specic positions; international airs; career airs; networking and holding events at colleges.

This section provides a variety o inormation regarding the labour market in Malta, actors that will infuence its recruitment market, and the availability o the candidates required by employers.

All data is taken rom the National Statistics Oce in Malta.
