    Golf Workouts

    Introduction:

Are you an avid golfer who wants to learn how to prevent injuries from occurring, while

at the same time making yourself stronger and improving your game? Do you enjoy having an

excuse to get a massage, but is it worth to sustain an injury and endure pain just to get a

massage? The solution could lie within the simple answer of working out and allowing your

body to become more accustomed to the swing that you have. Over the past several decades

some golfers have struggled with injuries while swinging and during their rounds and the answer

could remain on the issue of whether or not they work out on a consistent basis or not. It’s

interesting to see the numbers when it comes to the number of people who actually take the time

to work out and try to make their body fit as possible in the hopes of becoming stronger and

hitting the ball further. Even if they do it for this particular reason they have a better outlook

than those who don’t work out at all. Working out has been proven to help in the field of

preventing injuries and significant ones at that.

Over the past couple of years the injuries have begun to increase in some of the average

golfers and that could be contributed to the lack of effort put in to make sure that your body can

adjust and produce the swing that you are trying to accomplish. “Out of 522 golfers that were

interviewed 35.2% of the golfers came out and said that they have sustained injuries from

playing golf.”  (Fradkin, A.J, C.F Finch, and C.A Sherman). This statistic has grown even more

over the years because of the thought that working out is useless and does nothing when it comes

to preventing injuries, but instead only helps in the conditions of making yourself stronger and

fit. This however is untrue to an extent because many golfers who have actually started to work

out and put in some sort of training has experienced and decrease in the amount of injuries that

were popping up whenever they weren’t working out. Also, some of the reasons people don’t

work out is simply due to the fact that they don’t want to put in the time, because they feel as if

they play enough golf then their bodies will automatically adapt to their swing and all the issues

will then be resolved. On the contrary though, because the more time and effort you put into

making your body stronger will help you in the long run because your body can acclimate to the

power and force that you swing with.

The reason for this particular research is to explain and educate the average golfer on the

risk of injur ies and the probability they have of sustaining a key injury if they don’t work out.

The problem in today’s society partly remains the fact that golfer’s don’t have a great

understanding of the effect that working out can do for your body. Most believe it’s as simple as

walking out onto the course swing the club a few times and then begin the round. However, this

isn’t the case and they need to be educated on the proper techniques that can be used to complete

a proper session. A proper technique should be using the proper equipment such as the balls

used to imitate a golf course, but the extra weight of the ball allows for the strengthening of the

arms and allowing your shoulders to turn and loosen. This will greatly allow for a reduced injury

scenario in these particular areas which can help others see all the positives that come from

    working out.

This particular section does have somewhat a bias part for me because I do play golf and

work out so I feel as if I may put some personal opinions into the paper. With some of the

information gained by people with a golfing background and in some cases with an actual injury

occurring their information may lean from one side to another just because of the fact they have

experiences with the particular subject. With this in mind and the rest of the paper focusing

particularly on the need and the different types of positive outcomes coming from this whole

work out idea some of the information could come across as bias. However, by gaining the

information from reliable sources with the evidence being supported by research conducted

previously it allows for some of the bias to be worked out of the paper. With this being said the

rest of the paper will pay close attention to the fact that most injuries have begun to occur in

golfers that primarily are considered average in how much they play. Also, the fact that most

injuries occur in the top half of the body. It goes into depth in the research papers used as

references that most injuries come at the shoulder area, because of the fact that so much rotation

and force is used to swing that some things tear and cause significant injuries that can have a

long lasting impact for years to come.

    Literature Review:

Over the past couple of decades the research for ways to prevent injuries from occurring

in the golfing world has increased dramatically. Decades ago professional golfers didn’t have

personal trainers and workouts that were specific for certain areas, but in today’s world we have

personal trainers and workouts tailored for specific areas of the body. For instance, Tiger Woods

has been on, but mostly off the course for the past two PGA Tour seasons due to back and ankle

injuries. “He is one that works out constantly a lot in order to keep himself in shape and prevent

these types of injuries, but the swing changes he has made doesn’t necessarily work for the

swings he has begun to make” (Simon Holmes Tiger Woods). With the golfers making changes

throughout their career they need to consistently keep their bodies in shape and in such condition

that they can play basically seven days a week. While all this happens a certain amount of time

is for personal training and getting fit for the swing they have. To elucidate, Henrick Stenson

has a big powerful swing that most people and players on the tour can’t have. “To achieve this

powerful swing that he has he must have workout to get the muscle mass and keep in top shape

to maintain the swing speed he has ( Simon Holmes Henrick Stenson).” All these things have

  • 8/17/2019 Assigment 2 PDF

    5/15

become possible thanks to the incredible amount of training and gear that have been allowed to

be created thanks to the incredible advance in technology and things in the weight room.

When someone sustains an injury and gets the results they are always hoping for a quick

recovery time which is good in some cases, but bad in others and in some cases such as “Jim

Furyk which has dealt with a significant injury in his wrist.” (Matt Adams). People try and rush

back into things because in today’s world money is everything and winning golf tournaments

gives out a lot. However, by doing this it increases the risk for a more significant injury and it

could sideline them for much longer than they want. To explicate, Tiger Woods has sustained

some injuries that has made him miss a considerable amount of time and prevented him from

maintain his consistency in his playing. “If you look at the beginning of his injuries and his time

off his swing has not only changed, but his physical condition has as well.” (Simon Holmes Golf

Fix) The research conducted upon injuries sustained from golf are higher than one would think

for certain parts of the bodies. The most significant injuries are occurring in the back region of

the golfers which can come from a multitude of things. To elucidate, “The injuries could come

from the swing as in the case of Tiger Woods and also in some cases overtraining.” (Cheyne A

Sherman & Caroline F Finch). This happens when a consistency doesn’t exist in the terms of

working out and keeping into shape. People try to do more than their bodies can handle and they

think that it will give them more strength to do things that they can’t when they don’t work out.

“All these things can lead to injuries when the proper action isn’t taken and it can lead to more

harmful injuries and possible issues in the future.” (B Abernethy, R.J. Neal, M.J. Moran and

    A.W. Parker)

With these types of injuries some of them go unrecognized compared to co me other

sports. Most injuries become recognizable when the sports are more violent than are the sports

like golf which seem to be less recognizable. However, injuries are quite frequent in golf and

occur at higher rates than some of the other sports. This sport shouldn’t be taken lightly because

some serious injuries can occur and it can lead to bigger events down the road and have longer

lasting effects in the future. (AJ Fradkin, PA Cameron & BJ Gabbe) This goes to show you that

just because a sport isn’t as physical or well know injuries will and can occur and they can be

just as significant as injuries that occur in the most physical of physical sports. Since the

workouts help in reducing injuries then some of the most prominent types of injuries that occur

can lead to a healthier and less hurtful career. To explicate, the most common type of injuries

occur in the upper limbs and the upper part of your spine. These are the typical injuries that

occur with golfing injuries occur from a multitude of things such as the swing and the workout

patterns the golfers possess. If a golf has a strong swing and don’t work out then the possibility

for pulled and pinched nerves are higher than those who work out to try and make their swing fit

their body. In order to do this the time and commitment must be there so the possibility for

injuries will decrease because certain parts of the spine require surgery whenever they are injured

or pinched. (Germain Thériault and Pierre Lachance) Recent studies have shown the increase in

golfing injuries occurring in some professionals. “Out of 522 golfers that were interviewed

35.2% of the golfers came out and said that they have sustained injuries from playing golf.”

(Fradkin, A.J, C.F Finch, and C.A Sherman). These injuries are mostly occurring in the lower

back portions and are probably occurring from the swing that they are making and the fact that

the bodies aren’t quite as fit as they need to be to produce that swing.  Also, the golfers who

played less seemed to have more injuries occurring than those who played more frequently. This

happens in most sports, but if you just do a little work out and play a little more than the risk for

injury lessens. (Andrea J. Fradkin, Peter A. Cameron, Belinda J. Gabbe)

    Entering the Conversation:

After analyzing all the data that I have collected it has become very apparent that injuries

dealing with golf are becoming more and more apparent than once thought before. “Out of 522

golfers that were interviewed 35.2% of the golfers came out and said that they have sustained

injuries from playing golf” (Andrea J. Fradkin, Peter A. Cameron, Belinda J. Gabbe) this statistic

proves the point people think golf has a less strenuous effect on your body, than some of the

more physical sports such as football, hockey, and basketball. With most of the golfers choosing

to not workout or warm up before a round the risk and susceptibility for injuries is severely

increased. It’s amazing to see that the people who play golf on a regular and consistent basis

actually take the steps to do what’s needed and it’s mainly the ones who don’t play all that often

who suffer with these injuries. I believe that it’s possible to educate the general golfers on the

risk that are associated with the lack of working out as well as offering them the tools to

complete these workouts, which will ultimately cut down on some of the injuries from occurring

considering that most of them happen at the amateur level.

With some injuries occurring at a more rapid rate it has become a little more apparent that

people aren’t taking working out as seriously as they maybe should. There isn’t a lot of pressure

out there informing the general public on the positives and negatives that come with the working

out process, and that plays a vital role in the lack of people actually doing it because most people

follow a bandwagon type of deal, meaning that if more and more golfers began to workout then

maybe others would as well. However, a lot of things come into play when talking about

working out and some people don’t have the money to gain full access to all of the wonderful

workout tools. For many people the only type of workout equipment that they own at the home

may be a few weights that they used to use and maybe a treadmill which is a great way to warm

Commented [6]: What are some of the risk awith the lack of working out? To help the readthe idea of how important working out for golf

up your legs and if the weights are heavy enough then a great way to work the back, arms, and

shoulders. The problem then becomes getting them involved into doing these workouts maybe

once a week or at the very least the day before and a little before they actually go to the course to

play. These people are the fortunate ones because they have these in their houses and don’t have

to fork out money to buy a gym membership. Golf is an expensive sport anyway and having to

buy a gym membership just for this particular reason is a little useless in terms of the amount

they use it. The workout equipment is also very expensive so there are several alternatives that

could happen in order to make this work and help many of the other golfers who don’t have the

necessary means be able to gain the access and begin the necessary plans to begin and workout.

When it comes to the starting cost of the workout equipment needed, most people do not

have the funds to go out and buy them. Golf equipment isn’t cheap and the money aspect can

come into play when dealing with the average golfer. The average golfer isn’t going to want to

spend several hundred dollars for their golfing equipment such as clubs and balls and then go

spend a couple thousand on the workout equipment they might not use every day and this is

where the golf course can come in and help out their golfers. Some golf courses bring in a ton of

money because their rates are pretty high and the amount of play that the course receives

corresponds as well, which means that the amount of profit is very high and can allow for them

    to buy equipment.

The golf courses can come in and purchase some workout equipment and make it

available for the golfers to use before they go out and play or they can make it to where you can

buy a card allowing you to play golf as well as access their equipment throughout the week. For

the average golfer this would be a wonderful deal, because not only would you be allowed to

play golf at the course, but workout as well because part of the deal or a membership however,

the golf course looks at it makes the deal even better. Golf courses today do a similar thing with

their driving ranges and packages of golf when people purchase memberships. It can also build

up more profit for the golf course as well as reduce the chance for injury in the golfers that come

out to play at that particular course. With the chances of warming up before going out and

playing a round, the golfers have the ability to workout at their own pace and go through the

necessary steps to loosen all the areas of their body which could lead to a significant decrease in

injury if the proper techniques aren’t used .This is a great way for a golf course to gain more

publicity as well as make more money and it saves golfers money because they don’t have to go

out and buy all the equipment personally. The golf course can then go and convert the extra

money into the keeping of the course and make sure the things in the maintenance area are kept

    up.

The benefits to using this type of layout in a golf course would be great for getting to

know people as well as install trainers who stay in the gym and show the different techniques

that can be used in completing a proper workout as well as be experts in golf technic. With the

average golfer who doesn’t play that much and doesn’t have a membership can do is have a

chance to go in and workout for the price of their golf round so that they can have an equal

opportunity. After the one time deal the price could increase just a little if the golfer wanted to

go back in and use it every time he came. A good way to increase the odds of them continuing to

work out would to offer a great deal in which the golf is actually cheaper if you wanted to buy a

membership. By gaining access to all this equipment and by giving the general golfer a chance

to work out with a trainer for a decent price instead of the usual cost of getting a gym

membership or having to gain all the knowledge by purchasing the equipment and watching

videos it would give them a great hands on experience.

  • 8/17/2019 Assigment 2 PDF

    10/15

Most of the research conducted proves the point that many golfers don’t want to fork out

the money to buy the equipment and take the time to set it up and workout themselves. So a

great opportunity just so happens to add gyms to the golf courses and put trainers in there to help

out and teach them how to prevent injuries. This coupled with golf packages and other

incentives such as the snacks and drinks can really draw in the potential golfers who want to

work out and improve their game to the point where their bodies match their swing and the risk

and susceptibility of sustaining some of the more serious time keeping injuries away. This allows

them to have their own swing and allows them to have fun and increase their game on multiple

levels instead of just focusing on golf techniques. What the research also stated was the fact that

if some golfers had the means of help and other necessities then the chances of them buying a

membership with the course and using the gym would increase so that they could spend more

time focusing on ways to prevent the injuries from occurring again.

To go further into depth on the whole membership idea we can begin describing what

may come in a package and the cost as well:

    What’s included in the package?

    Cost for half a year

Package One: Includes free walking of

holes; cart fee; and use of the gym

    $150

Package Two: Includes free walking of

holes; cart fee is taken care of and all

that’s left is green fee; use of gym and

driving range; trainer to help guide

    $225

Package Three: Includes free walking of $320

Commented [9]: For this portion, you should to sell the reader on your idea. For example, eeven more in-depth why the membership wothem and how each different of level of membcould assist them. Tell the reader how it wouldtheir game", how would it increase their game

    holes; cart and green fee are taken care of;

use of gym and driving range; 10% off of

merchandise; well as 2 personal lessons

    with a trainer

This would allow for very affordable pricing considering that some of the places today

are this alone for every quarter of the year and some of this isn’t even included in the packaging

deals. These kinds of packages allow for golfers to have easier access to the gym and allows

them to play as well, because the main goal in preventing injuries is to get the golfers themselves

to work out and utilize the resources that they have around them. By giving them little perks

here and there it gives them the incentive to buy these deals in which the gym is included and to

have them every time that they come to the golf course.

Another effective idea that I believe will work is to explore the ideas of creating videos

showing the different level of severe injuries that occur in some of the professional golfers in

today’s society that greatly affect the average golfer’s views. People have a tendency to listen to

people who have a little more authority than we do. For instance, people who are popular and

are professionals tend to have more of an impact on topics that they can relate to instead of a

friend explaining their experience through things. To explain and portray the severity of the

injuries that some of the more well-known PGA Professionals go through we can make videos

explaining the process they had to endure to make it back from the injury that they had sustained.

By giving people the idea of the struggle and the money and time needed to return it can make a

lasting impact on those who feel like working out is a waste of time and doesn’t necessarily have

a great effect on the body.

  • 8/17/2019 Assigment 2 PDF

    12/15

To exemplify we can take Tiger Woods for example because of his popularity and

significance in the golfing community. During his years of playing he has endured some pretty

rough injuries that have ended up costing him a lot of money and tournaments because he has

been sidelined with a significant injury. Since sustaining his serious back injury Tiger hasn’t

appeared and played in a professional event in seven months which is a very long time on the

PGA Tour because events are held almost every week and the more time that is missed the better

and better chance of not making it into the playoffs increase. Last year for example Tiger Woods

didn’t make the playoffs for the third time in his career which is impressive considering as long

as he has played. By bringing this to the attention of the average golfer maybe we can install the

values that working out has to offer in them as well. Nobody wants to be sidelined for this long

and not have the ability to play a game they love, but the chance for something like this to

happen is at a greater risk if you don’t work out. This can have a lasting impact on the way

people view the working out as a whole, because if certain people get the idea that this is very

helpful and can actually improve my game then the chances for people actually doing it can

increase dramatically and maybe at that point they can go out and explain to others what they

know about working out and its advantages in the long run.

    Conclusion:

By researching the ways in which we can make others want to work out and complete

some of the harder things in an exercise routine it can go along with the research that was

Commented [11]: A lot of your examples useWoods, for a broader spectrum saying that allprofessional go through this, rather than just Wwould add an example Bubba Watson or anoknown golfer to show it affects all golfers.

conducted with this paper. To elucidate, research was done to see what types of injuries that

were occurring and the percentage and rapidity at which this injury occurred in most golfers. It

also helped in the aspect of determining the exact problem of why the injury occurred and the

most prone to seeing this type of injury and why it happened in them. By completing this type of

research it became evident on the intended audience and the different techniques that could be

used to help and reduce these types of things from occurring. Through the whole process it

brought new ideas to me and allowed me to come up with the necessary means to find out the

new and inventive ways that people are trying to resolve these types of issues.

Throughout this paper, I have studied the reasons and the specific group of people that is

impacted the most by the injuries sustained while playing the golf. Several questions could be

raised on the exact reason that this particular group was impacted at the rate it was, and the

conclusion was that the amount of effort and time was the reason for the lack of motivation and

participation in working out. However, the fact was that the golfers were actually willing to take

the time and work out if the equipment was provided to them and if the necessary help was there

to help and explain the techniques needed to successfully reduce the risk of the injury from

occurring again. It fits into the idea that the golfers are provided with the equipment needed, so

not only the fact that they don’t have to set up of the equipment to use them, but the cost and

expenses of buying the equipment is covered in their membership fee; this really appeals to

people in the fact that along with the training equipment a trainer would be in the gym with them

which can help in the fact that the techniques are explained and can help reduce injury. Have

you ever thought that the pros are the ones sustaining the injuries and the average golfers don’t?

The research really made it intriguing in the aspect that the people experiencing the most

common and in some cases significant injuries came in the form of people who play like me in

the terms of an average golfer. Just as professionals have to work out and keep their body in

shape so does the average golfer, because if the body doesn’t fit the necessary swing that we

have the chances for having an injury dramatically increase and can have lasting effects

throughout the golfing career if the body never fully sets up with the golfer's body.
