Assignment 30.1 Digital GraphicsIntroduction

I have decided to set up as a freelance graphics designer - so I have produced a report for the owner of a small chain of convenience stores to enable him to give me financial investment to set up my business.

Words and meaning you might need to know.

Resolution- Image resolution is the detail an image holds. The term applies to raster digital images, film images, and other types of images. Higher resolution means more image detail. Number of pixel per inch.

Colour depth - Color depth or bit depth is either the number of bits used to indicate the color of a single pixel, in a bitmapped image or video frame buffer, or the number of bits used for each color component of a single pixel.

RAM - stands for random access memory FAT – file allocation table

Hardware The graphics card takes digital information from the PC to show what is going to be on the monitor. A signal that travels through a cable to the monitor which then creates it to an image. The modern graphics card can be capable of producing a quality picture without slowing the computer down. Features that impact upon graphical work:

Hard drive is used to save all the documents and picture files that a digital graphics professional will save its work so they will need a descent hard drive to handle all the files but vector files is smaller than bitmaps files.

Graphics cards are one of the most important components that a digital designer will need a high-end graphics card than low end because the quality will be so different the high end will be more powerful than the low end and it also will give a better quality picture on to the screen and graphic designer will prefer that.

Processors is another important equipment it is the heart of the computer system so the better the quality the faster it will work because it will need to handle all the graphical work and run the software.

Internal memory RAMThe internal memory is used to hold programs when they are running and any documents or any graphic files that the user has opened. When a software application is run the program first gets copied from the hard disk to the RAM then when I run the program it will travel to the processor where the program code can be run. The RAM works at the speed of electricity. When a document or data file is opened it is first copied from the hard disk to the RAM, when it is in the RAM the file can be worked on by the user.

Modern hard disks have built in cache memory into the control electronics to help the drive work faster. The cache is used because finding addresses is faster using FAT, as electronic cache is used rather than slow disk to access FAT. Sometimes there is some cache memory between the processor and RAM. The cache could be on the motherboard or part of the processor but the processor works faster than the RAM, so it needs a lot of data and software to keep running without slowing the system down. The processor cache is a type of very fast RAM it helps the processor from slowing down in a way the disk cache helps the hard drive work faster.Graphic files can be huge so everything the hardware can do to make rapid transfers of data helps.

Processor (CPU)The processor is the heart of the computer systems it allows the operating systems and other programs to run. All the programs consists of instructions for the processor that are decoded and auctioned inside the processor to make them work. When a program is running the processor must make every instructions work and Sometimes be one after another. Some modern processors can processes side by side: quicker the instruction are run the quicker a program responds to the user.It is very important to choose a good system with a powerful processor to maintain performance of the complex of the digital images. DMA is short for direct memory access it is used to help with the processor to help rescale an image so that the image is a different size also exporting and saving it into another format like bitmap into a Jpeg and when changing something on a graphics image example changing the colour but all the operations needs a good and fast processor to operate effectively. File storage Hard drive or Hard diskA hard disk is part of a unit that is often called a disk drive and some people call it a hard drive or hard disk. The hard drive is the main place where you can save your graphical work as it is quickly accessible but the graphic software will find where you have saved your work and it will open it and it will save in the exact same place where you have saved it before. CD-ROM and optical drive This is a disk player where you can download software and you can watch DVD on the computer and

you are able to burn music onto a CD and you are able to store files. To store files on an optical drive you need to pick the right optical drive.

Flash cards Flash cards are small data storage devices that store data through its flash memory chip. Flash cards can be small or big but there capacity can be many gigabytes of storage. But the best thing about it you don't need to have a power source for it to remain intact. Devices that use flash cards digital cameras and other devices but a digital camera stores the picture that the user has taken and is able to edit them on the computer using the flash card but there are several types flash cards with different connecters. USB Storage devices USBs come in different varieties, you have the ones that you can save your work and easily portable like the memory stick that you can put in USB port, but you can get external USB hard drive you can back up all your files and save work and can take loads of work from computers to computer and you can put in the USB port. Input devices A input device is something that is used to feed data into a computer system or to control the computer systems. But the computer mouse is the most important input device but people that love doing graphics prefer using a graphics tablet. Graphics tablet Graphic tablet might have a pen that works similar to a mouse is used best thing is that the tablet is more precise than a mouse and the positioning when you put the pen to the tablet it will automatically appear on the screen in the exact place you got the pen on the tablet but if you pick up the mouse and put it down again it will be in the last place you have it before you picked it up. Digital cameraDigital cameras are impressive devices over the years they have become better and better to choose a good camera you need to have a good lens and a mega pixel it has got.Lenses is one of the most important thing on a camera it what gives the quality picture with the mega pixel the lines need to have optical zoom so you can decide what you want in the image you are taking. Digital zoom can be carried out later on a photo editing software. Mega pixel needs to write on. Scanner Scanners are a similar mechanism as a photocopier, it is the best way to input a paper image into the computer. With scanners they have moving a bar that scans the image but from underneath the glass in the scanner. Computer monitors

2. Software

Sam Smith Assignment 30.1 Digital Graphics 08th October to 3rd November

Vector based graphics Vector graphics are different from bitmap graphics the vector graphics features and once you have saved your work it doesn’t take up too much memory than a bitmap you will not lose print quality when image is enlarged or reduced in size. Vector images are made from circles and rectangles. Each object has an outline or a fill also they can be grouped together. They are very good for diagrams so if people need to use a diagram the beast software would be vector. Bitmap software Bitmap graphics are completely opposite to vector graphics to the extent where bitmap can edit scanned in images when scanned through a scanner or from a digital camera it has a large file size and also the print quality looks blocky when enlarged or reduced. Photo manipulation software Photo manipulation is software that uses bitmap programs to edit photos that you think you can make look cooler or if something is out of place, it is also known as photo shopping. Example programs that are used are Corel photo paint and adobe photo shop.

Other graphics related software Other graphics software that are used is Microsoft publisher because it is used to make poster and brochures for business that can’t afford for the graphic designers. PowerPoint can be used to show diagrams that you have done for a presentation.

3. File FormatsRaster and vector images can be saved in different file formats for example to save it as a jpeg is short for joint photographic expert group it has to be a raster image. A vector image can get saved as a dxf the real name for this file ASCII Drawing Interchange.

Differences between vector and raster

Vector RasterA vector image is made up of paths Images are made up with loads of pixel

but each a different colours.Vector image retains their image even if the image size changes.

raster image pixels do not retain their appearance when the image gets blow up

4. Comparisons

File storage Limitation of a CD-ROM

A CD ROM is a device where you can watch DVD and burn CD that can hold music and photo file but there is limitation:

Sam Smith Assignment 30.1 Digital Graphics 08th October to 3rd November

Can NOT read anything but Compact Disk Read Only Memory CD ROM have difficulty updating Once you have burned CD’s they can’t be updated CD’s have less memory than a DVD.

Limitations of a hard drive or hard diskA hard drive is a device that you can save all your work to and can access anywhere but there are limitations to the hard drive and hard disk

The hard drive and hard disk consumes a lot of power but the resistance of shocks is low and the data error rates are frequent. The weight of the hard drive and the hard disk are large and also the size is big but it can also be hard to recover data from the (Small Computer System Interface) controller cards it may be required but a loud mechanical noise can be generated also heat can be generated because there are moving parts inside the hard drive and disk.

When you have a hard drive which is older you might find it hard to find the hardware drivers for it.

When you have a hard drive which is old it may cause data to be corrupted on your computer and you may lose your computer data because of the faulty transfer from the disk platters.

Limitations of flash cards A flash card is a small card that comes in different shapes and sizes that can be put into a camera or a computer where a digital graphic design can put their photos on.

Flash cards have Low level access and memories wear. Flash memory has a certain limited number of programme erase cycles so you can’t erase

because you only have a certain amount. Flash cards can’t be used for a large group of people that want to use it

Limitations of USB Storage devices A USB is a portable hard drive but it is usually called a memory stick it is easy to use but can have the same memory of an old hard drive.

Even know it is portable it can also lose data. They also can know get viruses that affect the memory stick and one is called the conficker

viruses

Input deviceLimitation of a Graphics tablet

A graphic tablet is a tablet that graphic designer and artist may use to do there edit picture or do painting on the computer.

Limitation of a graphic tablet is that they come in different sizes that may take up most of the room.

Sam Smith Assignment 30.1 Digital Graphics 08th October to 3rd November

A graphic tablet is slower than paper drawing. The graphic tablet can be awkward to access the menu and make selections like it would be

easier with a mouse.

Limitation of a mouse

The computer mouse is difficult to install to the computer. The computer mouse is hard to fix when broken especially if it is a laser because the ones

with the balls if broken or lost can’t be replaced. The computer mouse might break if it is hit hard or if it fell off of a high table or disk.

Limitation of a digital camera

If the digital camera runs out of power it means you can’t take anymore photo and it could be vital.

If you have a corrupted memory card that holds your photos you have taken it could be a chance that you lose them.

Fewer people don’t print there photos they have taken they either keep them on the computer or on their phone or camera.

Limitation of a scanner

A scanner can get dusty so therefore there is chance for the glass getting scratch. Scanner won’t get a clear image if the scanner is moved or the image gets moved by the

user. Scanners are too big to carry round for everyday usage. A scanner can be easily broken if hit hard.

5. Output media

Monitors

You will need a high-end computer monitor for digital graphics where you have good graphic and resolution and high definition but you are able to use TV screen as a monitor through HDMI cable.

Difference between old aged monitors and the new age monitors

CRT Monitors 27" 850 Series Business LED MonitorThis monitor takes up quite a lot room. It is also heavy

This monitor is a flat screen so it takes up less room. This can be lightweight

Sam Smith Assignment 30.1 Digital Graphics 08th October to 3rd November

The resolution depends on what size the screen isSVGA = 800x600XGA = 1024x768SXGA = 1280x1024UXGA = 1600x1200

Resolution: 2560 x 1440

Printers

There are different printers that do the same thing but some can do better than another the different types of printer that you can get are:

Inkjet printers were made (1951) Inkjet printers are the common printers that people use because it is cheaply run how it works is that quirts little droplets of ink onto the paper to create an digital graphic image but if needed to print loads of images it is slow for complex printing.

Colour laser printer were made (1969) The colour laser printer is more expensive on the ink but it is the same costly to run as the inkjet printer but if you wanted to print loads of pages quickly this is the sort of printer you would want.

Dye-sublimation printers were made (1957) This printer is more expensive than the other two printers and it is also slow but it prints out quality images so thins printer could be a printer that is ideal for digital graphics.

Solid ink printers were made (1990) Solid ink printers melt wax like substances that get applied to the page that produce a quick and quality prints and it is low on cost to run so this printer could be ideal for a graphic designer.

But the inkjet is still preferred to the other printers.
