What constitutes art in the garden? That’s most definitely a subjective question.

Very early gardens were more typically utilized for the practicality of growing vegetables; herbs and flowers

that could be used for medicines and the aesthetics of a garden were left to much later time periods. Or to the very wealthy.

Early Roman gardens would have contained marble statues that could easily fall into the artistic category.

Rock sculpture and elaborately carved wooden doors or gates featuring bats, dragons and other mystic creatures would have been found in early Chinese gardens.

Japanese gardens used sheared plants representing mountain shapes and stones placed in groupings as part of the aesthetic landscape.

It wasn’t until much later that private gardens moved out of the realm of only those wealthy enough to own vast amounts of property – and those whose travels led them to bring home botanical specimens – to a broader range of involvement among those whose land holdings were a bit more modest.

Contemporary gardeners have definitely gotten on board with a love of decorative garden art and are so much luckier to have a wide range of offerings with which to personalize their gardens in an artistic way.

On the next pages are some ideas of garden art for you to consider from some very creative regional designers.

Having read Epic Tomatoes by Craig LeHoullier, I now believe that a tomato novice such as myself can successfully grow

any tomato I choose in my yard -- even from seed, should I so desire. It would shortchange the book to stop there, however, as I enjoyed LeHoullier’s history lessons on tomatoes even more than his growing instructions. Not only does the author have plenty of knowledge to share on the subject of America’s favorite vegetable, but he also shares it with enthusiasm and ease; his style reads as if he were there with you, having a spirited conversation.

The author is obviously a true tomato fanatic who stays current in the world of gardening. It was refreshing to learn about the Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) -- a tremendously effective grassroots movement that preserves and exchanges heirloom seeds around the world. If you ever need complete strangers to mail you seeds for a generations-old tomato known as the “Mortgage Lifter,” by the way, these are the people to contact.

Speaking of heirloom seeds, LeHoullier teaches garden planners the difference between heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, how to determine an authentic heirloom plant, and several other useful tips and tricks in Epic Tomatoes. Don’t be afraid to step away from hybrids and grow all heirloom tomatoes; if you plan well, you should have an equal (but much tastier) crop from the heirlooms, and the only issue you will have is choosing which tomatoes you will grow from LeHoullier’s wonderfully described and pictured selection.

Here’s another tip from Epic Tomatoes: grow your plants in containers, like the author does, and you will ensure the perfect habitat for them no matter where you live.

It is an easy, inexpensive way to control your soil and sun exposure. Frankly, garden planners in the Upstate should consider any growing method that does not require digging and amending our clay soil!

With straightforward language and informative photos, LeHoullier addresses all kinds of tomato-related topics -- various pest issues, disease prevention, breeding tomatoes, even the age-old question of removing suckers for better plant health -- in a manner that satisfies novices and seasoned garden veterans alike. Lighting is critical to our livelihoods and good lighting is paramount to our productivity.

In biblical principle, God took the first day just to create light and to separate light from darkness. We are learning more and more, as technology advances, how important and multifaceted light can be. The way that we psychologically process lighting is a key factor for mood and

memories. Light can evoke feelings of joy, romance and even fear. Just imagine these scenes: a sunny day at the beach, a candlelight dinner, or a cold pitch-dark room … yikes!

So what makes up a well-lit space? There is no one solution for this question because lighting preferences vary so much, but there are several ways to customize lighting and improve light quality for the home, no matter what your preferences may be.

There are four basic types of lighting that can – and should – be used to achieve the best lighting design: ambient, task, accent and decorative. Measuring what type of lighting you are already using and then filling in with the ones that are missing will help balance and add interest to your living spaces.

Ambient lighting fills the undefined areas of a space with a soft level of general light, enough for someone to navigate through the room. This is the case where most new homes have recessed can lights which are placed evenly around the room or in older homes where there is one flush light source in the center of the ceiling in every room. Ambient is practical but please do not let it be the only way you illuminate your interior; take time to light not only the

floors but also the walls and ceilings. Having flexibility and control of your light helps create the different moods and productivity levels you wish to generate.

Task lighting is a bright light that illuminates a particular area where a visual activity, such as food preparation or reading, takes place. Task lighting can be created with track lights, desk lamps, under counter lights and pendants, among others, to produce light directly on a work surface. Having enough light to work by is crucial to efficiency. If ever you find yourself straining your eyes to see the details of your book page, try bringing in a lamp or brighten the bulbs in your existing fixtures.

Accent lighting is similar to task lighting in that it consists largely of directed light. It is used to focus attention on artwork or architectural features, to help set a mood or provide drama in decorating your space. Accent lighting often gets skipped but it is what can make a space completely memorable. Play with putting more light on your ceilings and walls and less on your floors and counters. Ceiling brightness makes a space feel taller; brighter walls make a space seem bigger. Add drama by going with a dark wall color and then lighting the walls and artwork. Another cool trick is to put lights above your cabinets that shine on the walls and ceiling. This is attention-grabbling, drawing the eye up and giving height to the room. Many of us know to light up artwork over a fireplace but take this a step further and light your stairwell with sconces and wall wash your ledgestone accent wall. Whether building a new home or improving interest in your existing home, don’t skip on accent lighting when looking for ways to really up the ante.

Ambient, task and accent lighting can come in the form of decorative lighting. Decorative lighting draws attention to itself, sometimes serving as the focal point of a room – for example, a chandelier in the dining room or, on a greater scale, the “Taking Flight” winged light sculpture in the lobby of the Peace Center, which creates conversation and draws the eye from blocks away.

There are all kinds of new light bulbs on the market which, if used properly, can change your interiors. A fun way to transform a fixture with an exposed bulb, for example, is by swapping the regular light bulb for an old-fashioned Edison bulb where the filament is coiled and glows. This works well in craftsman, industrial, shabby-chic and retro style homes such as mid-century modern. Edison bulbs do not get very bright, so they should never be used a task light source.

Changing light bulbs is one of the simplest solutions for a brighter, fresher space! Dispose of those compact fluorescents that you just never could get used to anyway and make the leap to LEDs (light emitting diodes). LEDs now come in almost every bulb size and shape, so you can convert up to 95% of the lights

in your home. Taking the time and making the investment to do this truly pays off. Bulb for bulb, LEDs are more expensive than halogens, incandescent and fluorescents – but they use a fraction of the energy and therefore save you money over time. Their lifespan is different than incandescent and halogen (which just die) or fluorescents (which flicker when about to die); LEDs stay bright for a minimum of five years and then slowly lose luminosity …but they don’t burn out so you can have decades of light from the same bulb. I practice what I preach: just this weekend I changed my entire home over to LEDs (replacing 50-watt halogens with 8-watt LED equivalents) and – WOW! – it is incredible what a difference it has made. It’s like living in a jewelry store, where everything sparkles and has magnificent true color.

The trick to buying the right LED replacement is in a few technical details that can be found on the box or on the photometric information. Look for a color temperature of 3000k (kelvins) if you want clear light that falls between daylight and incandescent (your standard light bulb). This is, in my opinion, the best upgrade. If you prefer the warm light of an incandescent, then buy 2700k bulbs. For daylight equivalent, which is more blue or cooler, buy 3500k bulbs. To take it one step further, try LEDs with high color rendering which draws out the richness in color – anything above 80 is good.

LED bulbs are available in many different types and wattage equivalents at most places where you commonly shop. If you are looking for a bulb with a specific look and technical ratings, I would recommend an internet search.

My last few songs of praise for LED lights are that they are now available as dimmable and they emit no heat whatsoever, as opposed to most energy-burning bulbs which get hot and release a bunch of heat into your home.

Establish better lighting where you live and relax, then see how your quality of life improves. If it feels a bit overwhelming to undertake on your own, ask for help. A lighting specialist or a good designer can point you in the right direction, providing a range of options along with knowledge of equipment, creative applications and comprehensive project management to help you properly light your life! ah

CEVICHE DRESSING

2 lemons, zested and juiced1 Tablespoon orange juice½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper2 teaspoons tamari1 clove garlic, peeled and grated or pressed½ inch fresh ginger, grated½ teaspoon chile powder2 Tablespoons olive oil

In a small mixing bowl, whish together all ingredients. Season to taste with more salt, freshly ground black pepper and lemon juice, as needed.

PARMESAN TUILE CUPS

6 ounces Parmesan cheese, coarsely shredded2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour½ teaspoon black pepper, finely ground

1. In a small mixing bowl combine cheese, flour and pepper.2. Heat a nonstick sauté pan over medium heat.

3. Drop about a tablespoon of the cheese mixture into the pan in a rough circle. Cook until cheese is melted. Flip over and cook for about 5-10 seconds longer. Remove from pan and place over a small bowl to form a cup.

4. Cool completely before using.

1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved1 yellow or red bell pepper, ribs and stems

discarded, julienned½ English cucumber, sliced into thin strips

with a vegetable peeler½ jicama root, peeled and julienned1 cup snow peas cut in half on a bias¼ cup red onion, very thinly sliced½ cup broccoli or cauliflower,

broken into bite-sized florets1 mint sprig, chiffonade3 basil leaves, chiffonade1 Tablespoon cilantro leaves, choppedLemon juice, as needed1 recipe Ceviche Dressing6 Parmesan Tuile Cups

1. In a large bowl, toss together vegetables, herbs, and Cheviche dressing. Season well to taste with kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper and lemon juice, as needed.

2. Allow vegetables to marinate at room temperature for 20 minutes, or overnight in the refrigerator.

3. To serve, use a slotted spoon to drain away excess dressing and place about ½ cup mixed vegetables into the Parmesan cups. Serve immediately.

1. Place enough canola oil to come about 2 inches up the side of a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat until the oil reaches a temperature of 325 degrees.

2. Place the oysters in a medium mixing bowl and season liberally with Hog Dust.

3. Poor the cornmeal into a medium bowl and dredge the oysters, being sure to coat each oyster well.

4. Place the oysters in the hot oil and cook until lightly browned, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from the oil and drain on a plate lined with paper towels. Season with additional Hog Dust if desired.

5. Place the individual taco shells between paper towels and heat in the microwave for 20-25 seconds, or until warm.

6. To serve place 3 oysters down the middle of a taco shell, add some of the red cabbage slaw and the dressing.

RED CABBAGE SLAW

½ of a red cabbage, sliced very thin½ cup rice wine vinegar1 garlic clove, peeled and grated or pressed1 teaspoon sugar1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

In a medium mixing bowl, add all ingredients and toss to coat. Let stand for about 15 minutes.

GREEN GODDESS DRESSING

½ cup Duke’s Mayonnaise½ cup sour cream½ cup green onions, chopped½ cup parsley, chopped2 Tablespoons tarragon, chopped2 anchovy fillets, minced or ½ teaspoon anchovy

paste1 Tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 Tablespoon fresh lime juice1/2/ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus

more to taste

In a medium mixing bowl add all ingredients and whisk well. Season to taste with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

1. Season both sides of each piece of chicken with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

2. Place 2 slices of prosciutto, slightly overlapping one another, on a square of plastic wrap. Place one piece of chicken on top of the prosciutto. Set a few slices of Brie across the middle of the chicken. Top with a handful of spinach leaves. Roll the chicken breasts (like a jelly roll) and secure with silicone food loops or toothpicks.

3. Heat a large sauté pan over medium heat. When the pan is hot, lightly coat the bottom of the pan with canola oil.

4. When the oil is hot, place 2 rolled chicken breasts into the pan, leaving about 2 inches between pieces. Cook on one side until the prosciutto is browned and crispy. Rotate the chicken to cook on remaining sides. Check the internal temperature of the chicken. If it has not yet reached 155 degrees, place in a 350-degree oven and let cook for another 5 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 155 degrees.

5. Remove the cooked chicken to plate and cover with foil until ready to serve. If serving immediately, let the chicken rest for at least 5 minutes.

6. Keeping the pan over medium heat add 2 tablespoons of butter and allow to melt.

7. Add shallots, garlic and thyme. Stir to coat and cook until translucent, about 4 minutes.

8. Add the balsamic vinegar and chicken stock. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until reduced to 1 cup, about 10 minutes.

9. Fold in blackberries and stir in the butter. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

10. Slice the chicken into thin slices. Serve sauce over the sliced chicken roulade.

2 (11-ounce) cans Mandarin orange segments in light syrup

1 cup water2 cups white sugar, divided2 Tablespoons Grand Marnier1 ½ cups heavy cream

2 cups heavy cream½ cup whole milk5 ounces bittersweet chocolate

chips, such as Ghirardelli2 oranges, zested and juiced 6 egg yolks1/3 cup white sugar

CHOCOLATE ORANGE POT DE CRÈME WITH GRAND MARNIER CREAM AND SUGARED MANDARIN ORANGES(Makes nine 4-ounce portions)

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

2. Place cream and milk in a heavy medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Remove from heat.

3. Add chocolate and orange juice and whisk until melted and smooth. Let cool slightly.

4. In another large bowl whisk together yolks, sugar and orange zest.

5. Slowly whisk the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture. Strain if batter contains any lumps.

6. Pour batter into 9 (4-ounce) custard cups or soufflé dishes. Cover each cup with foil.

7. Line a large baking dish with a dishtowel. Place cups in the pan on top of towel. Add enough hot water to pan to come halfway up sides of cups.

8. Bake until custards are set but center is still jiggly, about 35-40 minutes.

9. Remove cups from water and remove foil. Chill custards until cold at least 2 hours and up to 2 days.

10. Serve pot de crème topped with Grand Marnier cream and sugared mandarin oranges.

1. Drain Mandarin oranges and reserve syrup.

2. In small saucepan bring water to a boil. Add 1 cup sugar and stir to dissolve. Add orange segments. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes.

3. Transfer oranges to a baking sheet lined with a Silpat or parchment paper. Toss with remaining sugar. Allow to air dry.

4. In a large bowl, combine reserved juice, Grand Marnier and heavy cream. Whip to medium peaks. Refrigerate until ready to use. ah

Renovations require forethought. A possible

new kitchen here, a bigger bathroom there.

But in the case of Jean and Peter Helwing, it

took a year and half just to decide whether or

not to purchase the totally dilapidated space they have

since completely re-imagined and currently call home.

Ceremoniously, the one-year renovation began with

getting rid of the pigeons that were nesting in the spot

that is now the master bedroom.

The 5,000-square-foot three-bedroom, three-level city

home on Main Street has had several previous lives since

its construction somewhere around the late 1870s. The

building, according to Greenville Historical Society records

from 1926, was known as The Davenport. It housed a

beauty parlor, a women’s exchange, a jeweler, a notary, a

real estate office, a hat company and a dry goods, as well

as a hardware store, shoe store and a department store

throughout the years.

With a leaky ceiling, a tarp over the unfinished skylights,

crumbling brick walls, and well-worn floors, the raw

environment in total disrepair was certainly daunting.

“We actually had to go up the back fire escape to get in,”

jokes Peter. The Helwings originally saw the property

when they stopped into Greenville while driving from

their New Hampshire home to their Florida home in 2008.

One stroll down Main Street and they were hooked.

Downsizing from their large homes in New Hampshire

and Florida, and with Peter being a painter, they knew they

wanted a place to accommodate numerous sculptures

and artwork (more than 50 paintings) that they had been

collecting over the years. Working with builder John

DuBonn and interior designer Barbara Dalton, they’ve

created an urbane city space that lends itself to effortless

entertaining while also showcasing their art collection.

“Our builder had the aesthetic sense and experience on

how to make it a home, how to renovate an old building and

turn it into a modern residence,” Jean says. “In fact, John

and Barbara worked exceedingly well together, exchanging

ideas and incorporating ours as well.”

A soaring spiral staircase with black metal balustrades

was built completely on-site and connects the entry level to

the kitchen, living room, dining room and master bedroom

on the second level and the guest bedrooms, den, studio

and patio on the third. All rooms flow together thanks to

a carefully curated palette of muted paint colors. “We took

special care to design the space to feel livable, warm and

comfortable, since it could feel cavernous with the 16-foot

ceilings,” Jean says.

The large open kitchen features custom storage, dual

pantries, a marble-topped island, a wine cooler, a work

desk and an informal dining table that seats five. “We

love to cook, entertain and we often have parties,” says

Peter. Two huge lantern-like fixtures add drama as well as

light and are suspended over the island. An Asian chest

is a strong counterpoint and adds interest, but is also a

reminder of Peter’s childhood – he was born in Shanghai.

In the more formal dining room a massive round table

with four leaves opens to seat 12, while an oversized brass

chandelier hangs overhead. A glass statue resides in a

specially designed and uniquely top and bottom-lit niche.

A limestone fireplace was installed as well as coffered

ceilings in the living room to add a classical touch, and

custom cabinetry showcases collectibles while plantation

shutters fill the room with sunshine.

Hardwood floors add warmth, and the barrel-ceiling hallway on the second floor exhibits art just like

a museum gallery. The luxurious master bath features geometric silvery sage and gray tile details with a

white porcelain European-style soaking tub; the custom-designed “car wash shower,” as Jean calls it, is a

walk-through with an entrance on each side. A coffered ceiling in the master bedroom features recessed

lighting and shimmering bombe chests flank the intricately carved four-poster bed. There’s also a small

office and seating area off the master for Jean with a charming outside balcony.

Peter’s third level studio/office is his sanctuary where he works

on his “watercolor realism” doing still lifes, landscapes and water

scenes. The cheerful, bright room looks toward West Greenville,

dotted with church steeples and urban rooftops. Nearby is a

bathroom with a deep stainless steel sink that is perfect for clean

up at the end of a painting session. Peter’s art has been widely

exhibited at Artisphere, Centre Stage and a local restaurant,

Augusta Grill. His exquisitely detailed artwork can also be

viewed at www.HelwingArt.com.

Two guest bedrooms are on the third level. There’s a casual

den that opens out to the terrace with another custom-built

entertainment center plus a wet bar. The terrace, which the

Helwing’s added and where Jean likes to spend quiet time

reading, has retractable screens and is a perfect place for

outdoor grilling and dining with a view overlooking Main

Street. The Helwings worked with the city to add the roof

over the terrace and reproduced the archway details, which

were present on the building’s façade.

All seven building condo homeowners share a lovely outdoor courtyard with open air

and covered areas and a handsome, wood paneled club room with full bar and a fireplace.

Additionally, a common room holds private wine vaults with storage for 750 bottles; each

condo gets one. Without a doubt, breaking open a bottle of bubbly was certainly in order

to celebrate this type of makeover magic. ah

Downsizing to downtown In November 2014, John and Karen Stoner

relocated to Greenville from Washington, DC.

The traffic-snarled DC area, where you have to

calculate driving to every errand with military

precision, was getting too unmanageable – even for

two West Point graduates.

The Stoners, now firmly ensconced in a downtown

condo, are enraptured with their new hometown.

“We absolutely love that we can walk to everything,

and we’re really enjoying the urban lifestyle with so

much less hassle,” says Karen. “We did the requisite

suburban thing while raising our kids. We wanted to

downsize and leave the yard work behind.”

Their former home was a gem. The 105-year-old

traditional Federal-style farmhouse they owned is

a highly coveted and very prevalent style all over

the Northeast. The white, two-story home with a

wraparound porch held many a memory of happy

family celebrations.

Now, their new 4,000-square-foot condo functions

just as easily as a place where family gets together

over holidays and special occasions. “It’s the perfect

place for us since it has two functioning levels; we

basically live on the top floor and the bottom floor

can be arranged for our visiting guests,” Karen says.

“We have a big family, with parents and kids, and

needed a space to accommodate them. We had them

all here at Christmas, and it worked out perfectly.”

A private elevator takes you up to the condo. There you’ll encounter J.J. who rules the roost. This English bulldog has a distinctive claim to fame: his brother Jack is the current mascot of the Georgetown University Hoyas.

When the Stoners purchased the condo, it was a total shell. Now, embracing the future, they’ve installed a high-tech house management system, which is fully controlled by the touch of a finger, on either an iPad or an iPhone – the TV, the music, the security system and even the window shades. “It’s so much easier than our big old house in DC,” says John. Working with builder Ridgeline Construction Group, they created a living, dining and kitchen area which now flows as one hugely expansive room. It looks directly out onto the terrace with a

cozy fireplace. The sleek, open kitchen is done in soft gray and white tiles with bright white cabinets and stainless steel accents. A large nine-by-five island topped in double thick Cambria pure natural quartz dominates the room and functions as a bar on one side. Nailhead studded linen bar stools are discreetly tucked underneath. Top-of-the-line Wolf and Sub Zero appliances, including a six-burner stove, a hidden built-in pantry and a wine refrigerator make entertaining a breeze. Airy, woven wooden shades diffuse the bright sunlight and echo the warm brown of the hardwood floors are from Shades Classic Window Coverings, who also did all the draperies in the home. Off the kitchen is a compact place for Karen to work; she’s the treasurer for a non-profit organization that donates scholarships to graduate students in S.T.E.M.

The living and dining spaces are light and bright in a neutral palette. “It’s calming and a bit rustic, not stuffy or pretentious,” says Karen. Her style is a deft mix of classic pieces that worked in the DC house, but are now reimagined for South Carolina living. The chairs are covered in subtle ikat, stripe and floral prints and contrast well with the rough-hewn jute carpet. The natural mosaic marble fireplace adds an additional textural element. “The couch is done in a formal brocade, but I also have chairs from T.J.Maxx,” she reveals.

The dining area is also a combination of styles and periods, utilizing a formal dining table paired with casual rattan chairs found in an antique store in Savannah, GA.

Spanning one wall in the living area is a stunning collection of beautifully framed antique architectural prints purchased in historic Williamsburg, VA. “They came from a book I purchased called ‘Tapestry and Carpets from the Tuileries,’ which was the royal imperial palace in Paris,” Karen says. Placed underneath the prints is a shimmering 1930’s- inspired mirrored console table.

The master bedroom features a few traditional pieces like the four-poster bed. “The master bath is where we really splurged. We wanted it to resemble a bathroom in a classic, old New York hotel,” says John. Carrera marble envelopes the space, which features deep gray cabinetry embellished with crystal knobs. A built-in vanity is a well-thought out and sophisticated addition. “We picked up a lot of ideas from Houzz for elements we wanted to include,” he adds. The shared walk-in closet even features built-in shoe racks.

A modern black wrought-iron railing leads downstairs to the living area below. A den – comfy and cozy with antique Persian carpets, rich leather club chairs, a built-in entertainment center and a wet bar – also sports a pool table. An exposed brick wall and beamed ceilings were added during construction, even though from the outside the building looks like it could have been there from the turn of the century. There is also a home office for John, and two bedrooms, each with their own bathroom.

Perhaps moving to a new city, immediately designing a two-story, three-bedroom home from the studs up, and picking out every item from doors to doorknobs could be a tad bit overwhelming. Karen, who was in the first female graduating class at West Point, took it all in stride.

“I was trained as an engineer, but what was fun about doing this is that everything from light fixtures to lamps to pillows can really make a difference. Our aesthetic changed when we moved South, but I didn’t want to start from scratch. I wanted to figure out a way to blend what I had in the old house, but give it a more modern, updated look.” Mission impossible? Obviously, mission accomplished. ah

For years, Joyce and Michael Pratt lived in a Tryon farmhouse surrounded by 15 acres, and kept a pied-à-terre in downtown Greenville. But when they sold the farmhouse and had to be out in 10 days,

the pied-à-terre suddenly became their primary residence.

With a few renovations and some paint, the condo overlooking the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail became an elegant space with room for most of their global treasures, including Indian art, English antiques and a vast butterfly collection.

Even after filling their new pad with favorites, they still have three storage units of additional furniture and art picked up over years of living around the world, from Scotland to South America to Germany, India and the U.S.

The first priority was to add closet space, Joyce says. They removed a wall to expand the closet in the neutral-toned master suite and also increased the size of several arches to create a more open feel.

“We had a fabulous contractor, Galt Innovations, and they completed the renovation in only eight weeks,” Joyce says.

The main living area is dominated by a fireplace that was once a basic plaster piece but now looks like an old English hearth thanks to faux painting by John Rainey. “He added the worn gold edges and all the dings and dents,” Joyce says. A portrait of Joyce at age 18 sits above the mantel.

Soft gray paint makes a quiet backdrop for colorful pieces like Persian carpets Joyce received from her father, who collected them, and Michael’s art, collected throughout his globe-trotting career in the textile industry. In the living room, pieces include exquisitely detailed paintings of Krishna and a shelf of figures including bronzes of the god Shiva and his wife Parvati dating to the 11th or 12th century.

“They show such fine attention to detail,” says Michael, who is now retired.

Overlooking the room from the top of a shelf is a large Buddha figure, which the couple had made in an Indian village that specializes in stone carving.

The Pratts kept the semi-circular kitchen island, though they prefer eating on the outdoor deck -- where they often take tea at 4:00 -- or in the dining room. They added a gilded treatment to the ceiling, drawing the eye upward to collections of Old French copper and linen baskets.

Flanking the kitchen are two striking paintings depicting avatars of Vishnu. Joyce laments that the couple only bought two when seven were available. “We should have bought them all,” she says. “We bought them from the Maharaja of Kutch when he needed money.”

Several prized items are housed in the dining room, including an old English mahogany dining table and a collection of antique Crown Derby china, which was a limited edition release of the Queen Mother’s wedding china. “We use it sometimes for a posh dinner party,” Joyce says.

Even the hall is jam-packed with interesting items such as a chest stocked with Michael’s extensive butterfly collection and an old Indian spice cabinet. Near the entryway is a sculpture of Ganesh, said to bring good luck, and an intricate red chest that once belonged to the Kathakali, traditional Indian dancers who twirl like dervishes. The Pratts bought the chest, which once held costumers, as well as a smaller chest that held makeup. It all sits beneath a dome that Michael painted himself in goldleaf.

“That was my Michelangelo moment,” he says, laughing.

Down the hall is a sitting room and office area that shows the couple’s love of books: an entire wall is filled with custom ash bookshelves. “We probably have 20 more boxes of books in storage,” Joyce says.

There is also another butterfly chest in this room -- Michael has every butterfly he has caught all over the world, meticulously organized by species -- and a large sculptural piece that most people would never guess is an elephant’s tooth.

The opposite wall displays Michael’s collection of 2nd edition prints by Mark Catesby, an English naturalist who sketched

South Carolina birds in the 1720s. He has collected some originals as well, and has even begun creating his own replicas. “Catesby was not an artist, but a botanist who was intending to illustrate what he found in the New World,” Michael says.

Joyce is originally from Scotland and Michael from England. After marrying, they moved to Germany and raised three children: son Adrian, who works in India; son Jamie, a lawyer and banker; and daughter Lucy, a respiratory therapist. They have four grandchildren, all boys, and their fourth child is Boris, a 7-year-old mutt who loves strolls through Cleveland Park.

After their years in Germany, they moved to India for eight years and then made their home in Tryon and Greenville. Though they enjoyed living in Tryon, and their world travels, the Pratts have fallen in love with their spot in the heart of downtown Greenville, just a stroll from so many favorite shops and restaurants.

During 25 years of building and remodeling homes in Greenville, we have seen a wide array of projects and people. We’ve been on great jobs – and we’ve been involved in difficult jobs. One of the things the great

jobs have in common is the presence of a strong design team.

A good builder can offer clients a variety of talents and skills; to be honest, we are typically more pragmatically minded and concerned with the budget, the nuts and the bolts. We all hate to admit our weaknesses, but builders might not be the most imaginative, creative people. Do not get me wrong, we have our shining moments. But to bring our clients’ dreams and visions to life, we have come to rely on the right-brained creatives of the industry – architects – to balance out our left-brained linear thinking. I cannot speak for all contractors, but this has generally been the rule for me.

It is not uncommon to see builders and clients try to work around involving an architect in their projects. People are usually looking to save some money, and therefore skip this vital step in their planning. We certainly understand wanting to spend money wisely, but there are some real tradeoffs in taking this approach.

Two sets of minds and eyes are better than one. Every client building or remodeling wants to make the most out of their space and budget. By bringing in a design/build team, there are some inherent checks and balances to maximize the quality of design while keeping the budget in check. We all see things from a unique perspective and we can all miss details or opportunities. A single person is more likely to make a mistake than a team of people working together and checking each other’s work. A good builder can put a critical eye to an architect’s plan, helping to hone it to a great build-able solution. A good architect can scrutinize a builder’s estimate, adding another level of quality control on the job. There is nothing worse than an adversarial relationship in a situation like this, but if you can find a team of people who can work together with mutual respect and shared goals, it’s a wonderful thing.

What’s the cost of NOT hiring an architect? Again, we all want to maximize our dollars but is cutting the design budget the right place to save the money? If someone is building or doing any significant remodeling, they want the final product to be the best that it can be. Most people will be satisfied with the work of a good contractor; however, there is a difference between being generally satisfied and

being absolutely thrilled with the end result. If there is a thoughtful, coherent plan from the beginning, then it is much more likely everything on the job will come together in a seamless manner. There is nothing more rewarding to us than doing a final walk-through with clients and seeing tears of joy in their eyes. Unfortunately, we have also been involved in projects where there is not a lot of enthusiasm when we are complete. The common denominator in the joyful moments has been a high-functioning design/build team that successfully brought the dreams of the client to life. What is that type of satisfaction worth?

It is probably clear that we are huge advocates for the profession of architecture and the value a good architect brings to the table. We all have our opinions, and after all the years of building and working with people, we have seen what works and what does not. So if you are considering a new home or some nice new improvements to where you are living, please strongly consider the design/build approach and the value an architect adds to the project.

The South wouldn’t quite be the South without its ever-present Magnolia grandiflora

tree. And although Southerners would likely claim it as their own exclusively, there

is evidence that fossilized specimens in other parts of the world of one type of

magnolia dates to 20 million years ago and another dates to 95 million years ago.

Growing as wide as 50 ft. and as tall as 80 ft., this evergreen tree is a constant staple of the

Southern landscape.

We’re going to focus on a beautiful specimen of the Southern Magnolia that inhabits the

grounds of a Greenville family who almost lost their tree to the devastating ice storm of 2005.

The loss of several limbs of the largest magnolia tree on the property gave rise to a very clever

solution to this potential devastation. They built a magical environment around the trunk of the

tree. It became a source of unique enjoyment for the family and a valuable fundraising tool for

a local group, TreesGreenville.

TreesGreenville, a non-profit membership based group founded in 2005, is on a mission to

plant, promote and protect hardy urban trees in Greenville County. They promote the benefits

of trees and protect the urban forest by teaching people to properly plant and maintain trees.

If you’ve been fortunate to grow up in a lovely, classic Southern home on 13 acres, why go anywhere else when you are getting married? So thought Anna Reid when planning her wedding to Brad Bowling.

Her family home was the perfect spot for gathering family and friends together for the celebration.

Brad and Anna first met while attending Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy in Birmingham, Alabama. They didn’t start dating until she was in her first year of pharmacy school and he in his third year.

After dating for three years, Brad took Anna to dinner one night, supposedly to meet up with some friends, but instead they went to a pier on a friend’s property that he had decorated for his surprise proposal. After she said yes, they went to his house where Anna discovered her whole family had traveled to Birmingham to celebrate with his family and friends.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to introduce you to the new Mr. and Mrs. Bowling and share in their happy occasion.

The wedding and reception was truly a family effort. Anna and her artist sister, Caroline Donaldson, created the chalkboards and signs used to direct guests to various areas of the festivities. Caroline’s husband, Matthew, lent his skills to create table centerpiece boxes from salvaged lumber. Anna’s mother, Melody, made and monogrammed all of the napkins and table runners. Anna collected antique and vintage plates to provide unique table settings. And Anna’s father, Will, made the altar.

Brad’s dad Greg was his best man, sisters Frances and Caroline were maid and matron of honor, and close friends provided support for the bride and groom by serving as their attendants.

Cindy Barwick, a valued family friend, was the lead floral designer with lots of input from the bride. Anna knew

exactly what she wanted and even went to Cindy’s home the day before the wedding to help make her bridal

bouquet. All of the arrangements turned out beautifully.

Like many Americans, my first step outside of the United States landed in Mexico. Too many TV Wild Westerns clouded my vision of Mexico -- a land of stove pipe cactus, black sombreros on Mariachis strumming in

the sun, as tumbleweeds rolled through desert towns. Tales from tourists claimed a vacation playground with high-rise hotels on boisterously carefree beaches, with tacos and chilies and a fist full of tequila or beer in thick handmade glasses.

I refused to consent to this stereotype of our neighbor next door and decided to explore a different, more exotic Méxihco, a name the native Nahuatl language called the Place at the Center of the Moon.

The Mexican people were a unique blend of many ancient civilizations, including the Olmec, Zapotec, Toltec, Maya, Aztec, Inca, African, French and Spanish, and still today over 50 native languages are spoken in rural locations. As descendants they showed great artistic skills as well as pride for their heritage. Their festive spirit was impossible to deny. Mexican people demonstrated a strong disposition of happy celebration

despite so much suffering along their history.

Beyond the vast diversity of people, I discovered that Mexico is one of

the 18 most naturally diverse countries of the world. With

over 200,000 different species of plants

and animals,

Mexico is home of 10-12% of the world’s biodiversity. It had 32 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including ancient pyramids at Palenque, Calakmul, El Tajín, and Chichen-Itza. Mexico protected nature at the Whale Sanctuary in Baja, preserved coral reefs and many rare animal species like the jaguar at the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve near Cancun, and hosted the majority of over-wintering monarchs from eastern North America at the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve northwest of Mexico City.

Mexico introduced chocolate, corn and chilies to the world. Even the red poinsettia, which the Aztecs called cuetlaxochitl, originated in Mexico; the plant is named after native South Carolinian Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States ambassador to Mexico in the 1820s, whose namesakes also include local sites such as the Poinsett Hotel and the Poinsett Bridge.

In Mexico I discovered the sacred taste on the plates of the Mayas with some Spanish invasion. The little juice stand that popped up on the side of the road just in front of the pineapple fields, a succulent essence I had never found in a grocery store; the plentiful dishes of beans and slow-roasted pork, spicy, tender and delightful; or the fish I ate on a stick offered me by a local fisherman. He speared it, cooked it over a fire, and handed it to me on the pole as my utensil. How delicious, Muy ricco!

Ladies loaded with red bananas and mangoes walked down the streets on their way to the markets where chilies, mole, herbs and avocado were sold. These made their way to the real Mexican kitchens where the dishes were made, and I was the lucky one who sat at the table. Food was fresh and full of flavor with a deep mix of savory, salty, tart and hot that contrasted the fragrant fresh corn or bean tortillas. It offered an emotional, moving, memorable experience of heat. Real Mexico lived in the food -- succulent, hot and tasty.

I expected to taste the Spanish influence but it was the Ancient Mayan and Aztec foundation that distinguished itself in the natural local ingredients. Corn, beans and squash were at the center of the plates, but what brought it to life were the country’s most unique specialties. There was Chinantla vanilla grown in the perfect environment in Oaxaca, one that was used to tribute the Aztec emperor Montezuma; Chontalpa Cacao, coming from the region of Tabasco, where cultivation and consumption of cacao have been an integral part of people’s lives since the time of the Olmec civilization; Seri Fire Roasted Mesquite that was used for tamales, a wild legume species with centuries-old traditions in Baja; or the honey made from native Puebla Sierra North American bees, a tradition that pre-dates the arrival of the European honey bee.

There were so many salsas! Spanish for sauce, I found salsa of roasted pumpkin seeds and peanuts accented with cloves and canela, a native Mexican bark-like cinnamon, salsas of tomatillos and tomatoes, some cooked, some not, each with deep-root richness. Some were explosions of flavor, hot and spicy, while others enticed contemplation with a deep range of complex flavors. Mostly they were a few simple ingredients, plants that grew easily in a kitchen garden. Not much had changed in the food culture

because history showed that even in the ancient Aztec markets salsa was sold. Large red tomatoes, avocados, tomatillos, chipotle, a smoked dried jalapeno -- all were staples in the Aztec diet, but were still used today.

At the restaurant, I watched the women in the kitchen use a molcajete, a rough-textured mortar, and a tejolote or pestle made from black volcanic rock to create the salsa, a Mayan and Incan pre-Columbian tradition. They worked the ingredients into a fine purée. Some of the chilies like the Pasillas were charred on a dry surface, obtaining the taste of

raisin smokiness, or simply chopped together for an explosion of heat.

Many of the ingredients were new to me, such as manioc, chaya, and jicama; but other fruits and vegetables were common like tomatoes, avocados, papaya, sweet potatoes, guavas, vanilla beans, chili peppers and cocoa. The way they prepared the food with their souls was confirmation that the Mayans were never defeated.

I wanted to bring Mexico home and decided to plant a garden for salsas. I wanted to create a colorful garden, one with zest and vigor that reflected the experience of fresh foods and natural wildness in Mexico and preserved some of the ancient traditions. The garden would come home in my kitchen for happy celebrations of summer spirit. I started with a small design, 4 by 6 feet in a sunny location.

Although the tomato is indigenous to Ecuador and Peru, the Aztecs domesticated it. After the Spanish colonization, many hundreds if not thousands of varieties were cultivated. I chose plum tomatoes that ripen to a brilliant red like Roma and Amish Paste, large oblong tomatoes with a deep, sweet flavor. My Mexican adventure was phenomenally successful. I had been on a journey of discovery and encountered people determined to be happy, places rich in biodiversity, cultures and traditions bursting with history, and food that gave meaning and richness to everyday life. I discovered more of what it is that I love. Visiting expanded my knowledge, opened my eyes, and spurred my curiosity in the vast expanse of Mexican values. It seemed I had found the “Place at the Center of the Moon” without ever stepping on the beach at Cancun.

Records show that tomatillos were cultivated by the Aztecs as far back as 800 B.C. and they still invigorate many Latin American recipes with their silky-smooth texture and slightly sour flavor. At least 2 tomatillos must be planted for pollination.

Most people loved the jalapeño, but I preferred the habanero, a crinkly orange red bomb that can cause serious pain. A sliver the size of a fingernail was enough fire for one bowl of salsa. Muy picante. I also chose the ancho-poblano, a four-inch flattened heart-shaped fruit that is relatively cool for a hot chili. When green, it was known as poblano; as it ripens

to red, it was called ancho and can be dried for storage and used in smoky moles. I chose the peppers I loved and planted five or six plants. I thought of the Monarchs on their journey to Mexico so I planted milkweed in the middle of the peppers to offer food to the travelers. I also wanted to remember our historic connection, and included my Christmas poinsettia that was very happy to be in the sun again.

Onions and garlic are essential. I started my red onion indoors in February, and set them out in mid-April, to give them time to grow sturdy green leaves before warmer temperatures and longer days prompted bulb growth. Garlic did best planted in the fall, when the cool soil encouraged root growth.

I enjoyed Thai Basil, so that was planted next to the most flavorful Mexican parsley also known as coriander. Even with ideal growing conditions, the herb was short lived, so I used it often and pruned it frequently, but also planted new seeds about every six weeks to keep a steady supply. The mint I put in a pot on the patio since it was very invasive.

The diversity of salsa types ranges from Salsa roja, “red sauce,” to Salsa Verde to Guacamole to Mole. There are so many salsas! Following are a few of my favorites.

CLASSIC GARDEN FRESH SALSA3 large tomatoes1 small onion (white, yellow or red), diced1 Tablespoon cilantro, chopped finely½ to 1 clove garlic¼ – 1 Serrano or jalapeno pepper, poblano or habanero

(use more or less according to taste)Juice from 1 limeSalt, to taste

Chop tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and peppers and add them to a bowl.

Squeeze in the lime juice and add salt, a pinch at a time, and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or two or serve at once with chips, tortillas or tacos.

TOMATILLO SALSA Makes 8 servings (2 cups)

1 pound tomatillos, husked and rinsed 2 to 4 jalapeño or serrano chilies, seeded for a milder salsa, coarsely chopped, or ¼ teaspoon of habanero for a fire hot one1/4 cup chopped onion, soaked for 5 minutes in cold water,

drained and rinsed 1/4 to 1/2 cup coarsely chopped cilantro 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1/4 to 1/2 cup water, as desired

Place the tomatillos in a saucepan, cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping them over halfway through, until softened and olive green. Remove from the heat. Transfer to a food processor. Add the chilies, onion, cilantro, and 1/4 cup water and process to a coarse puree. Transfer to a bowl, add salt, and thin out as desired with water. Taste and adjust salt, and set aside for at least 30 minutes before serving, to allow the flavors to develop. CONSTRUCTION.COM

SALSA WITH HUAUZONTLE12 ounces tomatillos, peeled and rinsed,

smaller ones the size of small plums are best 2 serrano chilesHalf of a medium onion1 garlic clove, unpeeled1 peppercorn1/2 teaspoon coarse-ground sea salt1/4 cup huauzontles, cleaned, boiled and drained

Place tomatillos and serrano chilies in saucepan, and pour enough water over them to cover. Bring to a rolling boil, and cook about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside. While the tomatillos are cooking, roast the whole piece of onion and unpeeled garlic clove on a hot flat grill pan until the skin is blackened in spots. Remove and chop roughly. Add salt and peppercorn to the molcajete and grind until powdery. Add the garlic and grind into a paste. Then add the onion, and grind until the onion becomes slick and juicy, and there are no large pieces of onion in the molcajete. Add the serranos and, using the pestle, break up the thin skins. Then add the tomatillos, one by one, making sure to tear apart the skins. Then, stir in the huauzontles and season with more salt, if needed. Or set it aside and reheat the salsa in a saucepan, in a bit of oil. The salsa is best served warm.

SALSA VERDE Makes 6 servings

1 to 2 garlic cloves halvedSalt to taste 1 anchovy fillet, rinsed (optional) 1 Tablespoon capers, rinsed and chopped 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3/4 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves Grated zest of 1 lemon (optional)

Combine the garlic, anchovy fillet, salt and capers in a mortar and pestle and grind to a paste, or use a small food processor. Add the parsley. If using a mortar, grind together until you have a paste. If using a food processor, add the olive oil with the parsley and blend to a purée. If using a mortar and pestle, slowly drizzle in the olive oil and work into the mixture. Continue to grind until you have a very smooth mixture. Add salt and pepper. If using within a few hours, allow to sit at room temperature. Otherwise, refrigerate. Allow to come to room temperature before using. Spoon over grilled or roasted fish, pork, beef, or chicken, or on toasted bread.

MANGO SALSA1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil or grape-seed oil2 small Roma tomatoes diced½ small jicama, peeled and finely chopped 2 Tablespoons fresh lime juiceSalt to taste¼ cup chopped cilantro1 or 2 serrano or jalapeño peppers, finely chopped 1 large ripe mango

Either grill the mango (large pieces then chopped) or use fresh and chopped, and mix all ingredients chopped together in a bowl and serve as a side dish or with corn chips. ah

MOLE12 guajillo chilies, roasted, skinned, stemmed and seeded 3 tomatoes, roasted and peeled ¼ cup lard 1 onion, peeled and sliced 8 garlic cloves 1 cinnamon stick torn into small pieces 1 Tablespoon Mexican oregano ¼ cup unsalted peanuts 1 clove ¼ cup masa (corn dough)1 teaspoon cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon thyme ¼ teaspoon aniseed (optional) ¼cup raisins, soaked in white wine to soften (optional) 3 peppercorns 4 cups chicken broth

Melt the lard in a large saucepan. Add onions and garlic, cook until translucent. (Good lard can be purchased from Walker Century Farms store in Anderson S.C.) Puree the peanuts in a blender and then add in the oregano, anise, peppercorns, cinnamon, thyme and cloves and blend with the tomatoes. Puree all to make a smooth paste. Add the onions and garlic and puree once more. Finally, add chilies to blender and puree until smooth.

Place the chicken broth into a pot. Make a roux; mixing the masa with ¼ cup of the chicken broth. Add the pureed ingredients to the chicken broth. Whisk the roux into the broth until smooth. Cover and simmer. After 1 hour uncover and simmer until sauce has thickened.
