Thank you very much.
Bethany Hall Renovation I n the past several weeks, you
may have noticed additional
activity, contractors, painter’s
van, trucks, and a large dumpster
around the church parking lot
and at Bethany Hall next door to
Christ Church. Some major work
and improvements have been
made to the Bethany Hall house.
A special “thank you” to the
Bethany Hall Committee for
providing an update on the
activity at Bethany Hall.
Jeanne McCormick, Executive Director of ARCH (the umbrella organization that includes
Bethany Hall and Trust House) reports that during this past year, Bethany Hall has offered
therapeutic recovery support to 58 women, with 30 successful graduations. Twelve of the
women gave birth to healthy and happy little babies.
Renovations at Bethany Hall have been going on throughout the summer, but are now
complete. Thanks to grants and community donations, the entire house, including
bedrooms and offices, has been repainted in calm and neutral tones. Ceilings have been
replaced and updated with more pleasant lighting. High traffic areas have been covered
with beautiful laminate flooring. At the moment, final touches, such as new furniture,
drapes, wall art, and area rugs, are being added. Christ Church has served as a welcome
refuge during the construction, as therapeutic group sessions were held in the Hopkins
Center while the remodeling went on next door. With
renovations complete, Bethany Hall can now function
at full capacity of 14 women, many of whom will be
pregnant or accompanied by a young baby.
Recently there have been as many as five babies in
residence. This creates a critical need for supplies.
Diapers (sizes Newborn, 1, and 2), baby wipes, and
baby clothes in sizes 0-6 months are particularly
needed. Your donations of these items can be placed
in a box on the stage in the Parish Hall.

HELP WITH THE COMING CHURCH SCHOOL YEAR!
We are in need of a
few more Door
People to help with
our Godly Play classes
and more volunteers
in our Nursery for the
coming Church School year. The Door Person
welcomes the children to class and helps them get
ready in the hall to enter the classroom. Once
inside, the Door Person is available to help the
children get out the work and feast. Our Door
People take turns with a team of teachers to make
sure all Sundays are covered.
Our Nursery volunteers help care for our babies
and toddlers in the nursery when our paid nursery
workers are away. If you are interested in helping,
please contact Patricia Cope-Levy,

Needlepoint Kneelers Update
T HE Needlepoint Kneeler project is in full swing. Design decisions have been completed, and the painted canvases are arriving on a somewhat
regular basis. I hope you have had an opportunity to check out the bulletin board in the hallway to see the design themes.
Now the work of bringing these beautiful canvases to life has begun. At present, we have 10 parishioners who have agreed to devote their time to needlepointing these canvases. Per our designer, if stitchers spend 15 minutes a day stitching, a kneeler will take 18 to 24 months to complete. Mary Page Gwaltney, Suzanne Bazak, Kathy Ellis, and Margaret Ann Ayers already have their canvases in hand and are working away. Cheryl Jorgensen-Earp, Kathy Johnston, Jim Ferrell, Kelly Barge, Ellen Urbanski, and Joanne Paris Jones are awaiting finished canvases to arrive, so they can get started.
We are still in need of stitichers! If you are comfortable with needlework, please see Ellen or Joanne, who can
talk with you about the stitching process. Please note that stitchers will be able to stitch their kneelers In Honor of or In Memory of a loved one.
As stitching progresses, the stitchers will bring their canvases to show during coffee hour. I hope you will take a moment to thank these dedicated persons who are giving the valuable resource of their time to bring these beautiful canvases to life.
For questions or interest in this project, please contact:

PROPERTY REPORT
This month we have two issues - one
long standing (nave lighting), and the
other a recent mini-crisis (air conditioning).
Nave lighting. A number of services require dimming
the nave lights, and essential parts of that system (the
“dimmer boards”) are failing, but are obsolete and
cannot be replaced. We are exploring two options. We
have been working with the original manufacturer in
Oregon to have the boards repaired, which would
require shipping them to Oregon. At the same time, we
are talking with local vendors about possibilities for
replacing the dimmer system. To complicate matters,
either option would require shutting down all nave
lighting while removal and reinstallation are being done.
We are working with both vendors on a plan to have the
work fully completed between the end of one Sunday’s
service and the start of the next Sunday. Fortunately,
the “we” doing the actual work are Ron Nemura, Don
Pack, Mac McCorkle, and Cy Harbourt, all with long
experience with the building and its systems and two
electrical engineers by training and experience.
Air conditioning. On July 12 and 13, APCO suffered a
brief power outage in a small area, including Christ
Church. However, the outages damaged the
air conditioning systems for the nave and
the parish hall. Our regular electrical con-
tractor was able to make repairs on Sunday
and Monday, and a claim has been made with APCO for
our damages. We are also getting quotes from two
contractors about protections for our overall system
and protections for individual systems.
ANNUAL FLOOR WAXING
It is that time of year again, when our sexton, John
Smarz, dusts off his “waxing” shoes, digs out the yellow
caution tape, unpacks a new mop head, and prepares
for the long, detailed process of stripping and waxing
the floors. The following areas of the church will be
closed, as John scrubs and buffs our floors to a brilliant
shine.
Parish Hall Closed

Kitchen & Back Hallway Closed

On Saturday evening, July 13, Cheryl
& Bill Poe, Melissa Hays & Jerry
Smith, Reggie & Hugh Craft, Lyn &

Church Columbarium to select their
niches.

Little Did We Know . . .
Hello! My name is Audrey Paige White, and I have been
coming to Christ Church for almost 15 years. I grew up in
the Episcopal Church and found Christ Church and a new
friend, Lorna Butcher. I’ve been here ever since. I am an
early childhood educator by heart but have worn many
hats over my 50 years. I worked as a therapy and nursing
aide in a pediatric rehab in Boston. I started an early child-
hood school in Boston for children, ages 2 through 6. I
built it, ran it for 10 years, got nationally accredited,
suffered burnout, and sold it all!
Soon after that, my Father
passed away suddenly. I went to
work in the family insurance
business with one of my younger
sisters. I have four sisters and
one brother. My twin sister and I
are the middle child! After a
couple of years there, I had to
leave desk work, so I packed up
my car and looked for a new
place to live…for 3 months!
I picked Roanoke as the biggest star on the map, as far
south as I was willing to go (I am a Northerner and a city
girl). I almost moved to Chicago but couldn’t justify one
expensive city for another. When I got to Roanoke off the
Parkway at Mill Mtn., I just felt this is where I belonged!
I’ve been here ever since. I started dating Justin right
before his last year of residency. Upon his graduation, this
year whirl-winded into marriage, new job, new house,
new baby! My brother and brother-in-law are both
ordained ministers and played a part in marrying Justin
and me here at Christ Church with Reverend Stanley.
Austin is comfortable at church and knows you all as
extended family (even if he’s too shy to tell you). Justin, a
very busy psychiatrist, plays catch up work on weekends
and hopes to rejoin us in church at
some point without the “rafters
falling on him”. Tom Baugh may
have to organize another drum-
ming group to entice him!
I am notoriously bad with grown-
up names, but may remember you
if you’re under 6 years old! Try
me; I’ll forget, but will want to
make the effort! See you around
coffee hour or in the halls upstairs
“subbing” with the youth and
nursery!
Our family summer vacation this year was to Cooper-
stown, NY, the Baseball Hall of Fame, to Toronto to see
the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays, and to Niagara Falls! It was a
blast! —Audrey

Patrick, and sister, Josie. The visitation reception you
provided and attended, and the expressions of

hearts and spirits. We are on that long, dark, crooked
road of grief, but your support is helping us along this
journey, and we are so very grateful.

August Feed the Hungry ~ Bethany Hall
Our August Feed the Hungry recipient is our next-door
neighbor, Bethany Hall. Founded in 1970, Bethany Hall is a
private, non-profit agency that provides residential substance
abuse treatment for women. Thanks to the services there, more
than 1800 women have been able to save and rebuild their lives
after suffering from the disease of addiction. Bethany Hall
offers a safe, therapeutic environment, where women from
Virginia and elsewhere, including some who are pregnant and
some who have babies, are able to develop the tools to remain
free from alcohol and other drugs. They regain a sense of self-
confidence and responsibility. This year, the Bethany Hall
building is undergoing significant renovations that will make
the living environment more pleasant and welcoming to the
residents.
Christ Church has always had a special relationship with
Bethany Hall. Some members of the parish regularly spend
time with the Bethany Hall babies. Each year Christ Church
hosts the annual Thanksgiving dinner for residents of Bethany
Hall, Trust House clients, and the
Board of ARCH (the organization
that oversees both agencies.) We
also collect items that the women
and children of Bethany Hall
need, such as personal articles and
household goods. Your donations
to Feed the Hungry will continue
our tradition of financial support
for the agency. Grants and public
funding do not provide sufficient support to sustain the work of
Bethany Hall. Therefore, our contributions are vital to their
important work. We are also grateful to have the opportunity to
welcome residents of Bethany Hall to join us at our worship
services.
For contributions by check, please make it payable to Christ
Episcopal Church and earmark “Feed The Hungry.” You may
also place your donation in one of the yellow envelopes found
in the pew racks. Drop your check or yellow “Feed the Hungry”
envelope in the offering plate.
