Hydrawise Service OutagesSERVICE OUTAGES are rare but can happen and we like to keep our customers informedas soon as possible. You will likely see a notification within the Home dashboard of the appto let you know that we are working with our providers to restore service for all affectedusers. See chart below for recent outages:

Outage Date Description

December 17, 2021, between 7:14 AM PST and 7:59,AM PST

Amazon Web Services experienced aninternet outage that impacted connectivityfor all Hydrawise controllers. During thistime controllers could not communicate withHydrawise infrastructure to accept changesto their configuration.

From 7:59 AM PST, controllers with serialnumbers starting with ‘c0’ progressivelyreconnected to Hydrawise with all ‘c0’controllers fully connected by 1:59 PM PST.

December 17, 2021, between 7:59 AM PST and 9:44PM PST

The controller's serial numbers starting with ‘05’ or‘0F’ were impacted by a second outage with theAmazon Web Services IoT service. Controllers had anintermittent connection to Hydrawise until 9:44 PMwhen the issue was fully resolved by Amazon.

Hydrawise controllers keep a local copy of their program so irrigation during this time wouldnot have been impacted.

wireless router. When setting up the router, it should remain at least 3' (1 m) away fromother wireless devices such as a Hydrawise enabled controller.

AT&T recommends the following as well:

Install the router away from large metal objects such as metal racks and cabinets.Do not install it near other power sources. The power supply should be at least 6' (1.8m) away.Install the router away from cordless phone bases or microwaves.Install the router vertically with nothing resting on or against it.Do not install the router in a closed area such as a cabinet or closet.

eero Mesh NetworkEero mesh routers are compatible and successfully connect to all Hydrawise enabledcontrollers. The topics covered below can assist in controller connection challenges youmight experience with an eero mesh network.

Bridging Access PointsBlock From NetworkNaming ControllerAdditional Troubleshooting Tips

Bridged Access Points

Bridge your eero devices by using following the instructions below: Bridged AccessPoints - Mesh networks need to have their access points (AP) bridged so the IP allocationfrom the DHCP server match. This can be an issue with the IP the controller receives fromthe AP and DNS server which will cause the DNS to fail when doing a network test. LEARNMORE [1]

1. Open the eero app and tap SETTINGS (bottom right corner).2. Select ADVANCED.3. Select DHCP & NAT.

Copyright 2022 Hunter Industries. All Rights Reserved. 4

Page 5: AT&T Router Location - Hydrawise

4. Switch your selection from AUTOMATIC (recommended) to BRIDGE or MANUAL (forthose running static IP).

5. Click the SAVE button in the top right corner.

Blocked From Network

If you notice a device that shouldn’t be on your network, you can restrict it from accessingthe internet by blocking it from the connected device list.

If you’re using the iOS version of the app, tap on the HOME TAB to open the list ofconnected devices. You can tap on any device on this list, then scroll to the bottom of themenu that appears and select  BLOCK FROM NETWORK to disable network access onthat device.

Blocked devices will now appear in a new list that populates at the bottom of the homescreen. You can tap on any device on this list to remove it from the block list, which will re-enable network access.

Name Controller

The eero network may not allow unknown devices to connect. Please be sure to log in tothe eero software and name the irrigation controller if this is the case.

Additional Troubleshooting Tips

Perform eero router updates regularly using their app.If using a mesh network (multiple eero devices), use the eero app to check which eerodevice the Hydrawise controller is connected to. The controller may be communicatingto an eero device that is NOT within range and you're unable to switch eero devices.Try a router reboot or temporarily change the SSID, then revert back to the previousname attempting to move the controller to the closest eero device.Power down all eero devices and leave one online to see if connection problemspersist. This will confirm a mesh issue and the routers need to be moved closer to thecontroller.

Your password is entered correctly. It is case sensitive and must be at least 8characters long.Check that the wireless security types match between the controller and your wirelessrouter. Hydrawise recommends use of WPA2 security between the controller and yourwireless router.

Is there a checklist I can runthrough when my controllerdoesn’t connect to wireless?1. Check that your wireless router is powered on.

2. Make sure that your controller is close enough to the wireless accesspoint/router.

Copyright 2022 Hunter Industries. All Rights Reserved. 19

Page 20: AT&T Router Location - Hydrawise

3. Make sure that the router has 2.4GHz Wi-Fi enabled. The controller willconnect to 2.4GHz 802.11b/g wireless access points; some routers areset to accept 5GHz only.

4. Check that the security mode for both your wireless router and controllerare the same. Hydrawise strongly recommends WPA2 personal for boththe wireless router and controller. If your router is not configured for this, try changing the security mode to WPA2 personal.

5. Navigate to the Network Settings page on the controller. Look to see ifthe signal icon on the lower right-hand area of the screen is blinking or if itis solid green. If it's blinking, that means it’s trying to connect. If it's solid,it is connected to the wireless router.

6. Press Test Network on the controller. This will do a ping test to your localwireless modem, your DNS server, and the Hydrawise server. Make surethese tests are successful.

The Test Network button can be used to test network connectivity for troubleshootingpurposes. The network test will verify connectivity to four destinations:

Checking Wi-Fi performs a ping test to the Gateway address listed in the Network Status screen. If this test fails, check that you don’t have MAC

address filtering enabled on your router.

Checking DNS performs a ping test to the DNS address listed in the Network Status screen. If this test fails, check that the DNS address is correct.

If it is wrong, correct the DNS address under DHCP Settings on your wireless router. It is possible for this test to fail if the DNS server does not

accept ping requests.

Checking Internet performs a ping test to the Google server at IP address 8.8.8.8. This is a well-known server that accepts ping requests on the

internet. If this test fails, it indicates an issue with the internet configuration of your wireless router.

Checking Hydrawise performs a ping test to the Hydrawise servers. If this test fails, there may be an issue with the internet configuration of your

wireless router.

Page 21: AT&T Router Location - Hydrawise

7. Make sure you have values in your IP address, Gateway, and Netmask. Also make sure that the DNS server setting on the controller matches theother settings on your device.

8. Check the wireless channel your wireless router is configured to use. Hydrawisesupports wireless channels 1 through 11 (these are standard channels for the UnitedStates). If your wireless router is set to use Channels 12, 13, or "Auto," change it toChannel 1, 6, or 11. You can also try using a different channel in case there isinterference from a neighbor's wireless router.

9. Check to see if other devices connected to the same access can go to theHydrawise website.

10. Consider moving the controller away from potential sources ofinterference, including microwave ovens, nearby base stations usingadjacent channels, or cordless telephones operating in the 2.4GHz range(you could also change the channel your phone uses).

Dealing with Low Wi-Fi SignalStrengthFirst, check your Wi-Fi signal strength by reading the tips in our article here [23]. In anaverage home, you usually have to deal with three major sources of Wi-Fi signalinterference:

Wall and floor interference: Homes built with brick, concrete, or metal have the mostimpact on Wi-Fi signal interference because the construction material can block off thesignals. Wood and glass can also interfere, but not as much. Competing Wi-Fi network interference: If you live in a highly populated urban area, you may experience a weak Wi-Fi signal due to a large number of competing signals inyour area. Electronic interference: TVs, computers, mobile phones, microwaves, and otherelectronic devices are present in most homes. Any type of electronic device caninterfere with your Wi-Fi signal.

Page 30: AT&T Router Location - Hydrawise

These types of interference can disrupt your Hydrawise device. Here are sometroubleshooting tips to help solve the problem:

First, determine the Wi-Fi signal strength in the area where you want to mount the controller.Test the signal using your smartphone or another Wi-Fi device to make sure the signalis showing at least medium to high strength.Make sure there are no metal or concrete objects that are in the direct line of sight between thecontroller and your router/Wi-Fi device:

Do not place your controller inside a metal shed.Do not place your controller in a basement.

Remove electronic devices located between the controller and the line of sight of your router. If you can put a network access point or Wi-Fi extender near your controller, you canestablish a direct line of sight to the Wi-Fi source without interference.

Campus & Corporate NetworkConnection Issues

Campus & Corporate Network Connection Issues

In a typical corporate network, users will normally connect their laptops wirelessly to theinternet using a username/password that comes from the organization’s Microsoft ActiveDirectory servers. The protocol used for this is known as 802.1X authentication.

Utilizing username/password authentication for devices that don’t have a person logginginto them each day is problematic for a number of reasons:

1. Devices such as printers, TVs and irrigation controllers won’t have a Microsoft ActiveDirectory account so there is no username/password combination to enter on thedevice

2. Most user accounts have a password expiration policy meaning that you’d have to goto each of your wireless devices and change their password each time your passwordexpires

3. Devices such as irrigation controllers are typically installed in secure locations and canbe hard to reach. For example, your irrigation controller has a locked door and may be

Page 31: AT&T Router Location - Hydrawise

installed in a basement or plant equipment room.

Most devices such as printers, TVs, and irrigation controllers do not support 802.1Xauthentication for the reasons outlined above. With wireless-enabled devices becomingcommon, we are often asked for best practice for securely connecting these devices to theinternet. There are a number of ways of securely connecting your irrigation controller to theinternet.

Use a Wi-Fi 4G Hotspot

Bypassing the campus network completely is one method of gaining access to the internet.Wi-Fi 4G hotspots allow the controller to connect to a dedicated Wi-Fi network with theinternet connection via 3G, 4G, or LTE network. Wi-Fi hotspots (also known as Mi-Fi) areavailable from most wireless carriers such as AT&T and Verizon.

Create a dedicated “device” wireless network

Almost all corporate/campus wireless networks allow the creation of multiple wirelessnetworks without the need to deploy additional hardware.

Follow these steps for setting up a security device network:

1. Using your wireless management software, create a new wireless SSID2. Enable WPA2 encryption but make sure to disable 802.1X authentication3. Choose a complex password for your new wireless network and enter this on devices

that require access4. Enable MAC address filtering on your new wireless network to allow only authorized

devices (such as your controller) (optional)5. Allow only access to the internet from your new wireless network (optional)

My wireless network/router is notshown in the list of wirelessnetworks. What should I do?First, make sure that the controller is close enough to wireless access point/router.

You can check the quality of your wireless signal using another device, such as aniPhone or Android phone. Take your phone to your controller's location and check thewireless signal strength.Make sure that the router has 2.4GHz Wi-Fi enabled. Although this is standard, somenewer routers can be configured set to accept 5GHz connections only. The controllerwill connect to 2.4GHz 802.11b/g wireless access points. In your wireless router, checkthat the radio mode is set to 802.11b/g or 802.11b/g/n mode (sometimes this is calledMixed Mode).Check the wireless channel that your wireless router is configured to use. This shouldbe between Channel 1 and Channel 11.Some wireless routers may be configured to hide the wireless network. In such cases, the controller will not be able to find the wireless name and you will need to manuallyenter it into the controller.Consider moving the controller away from potential sources of interference, includingmicrowave ovens, nearby base stations using adjacent channels, or cordlesstelephones operating in the 2.4GHz range (you could also change the channel yourphone uses).

For further information, refer to Change Your Wi-Fi Router Channel to Optimize YourWireless Signal [31] or speak to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) for exact steps on howto do this on your specified router.

I have a weak internet connection.Copyright 2022 Hunter Industries. All Rights Reserved. 38

Page 39: AT&T Router Location - Hydrawise

Is this a problem?Hydrawise is designed to work well in situations with intermittent internet access. Thismeans that your controller will run well even if your internet is down for long periods of time.Watering will continue as long as your schedules and program start timeswere synchronized to your controller before it went offline. This is called Watering inOffline Mode.

Remember that when the controller is disconnected from the internet, you won't be unableto start or stop irrigation zones using our dedicated application. In addition, changes madeto your irrigation system won't take effect until your controller is reconnected to the internet.

I received an Error A00 message. What does this mean? This error usually occurs if the router/Wi-Fi you are using is on a channel outside 1 through11. For example, if you are trying to connect to your home Wi-Fi and it is on channel 12 or13, you will see this message on the controller.

To address the issue, change your Wi-Fi to a channel between 1 and 11 (having it on"Auto" can cause the channel to be 12 or 13). You can call your ISP or the routermanufacturer if you aren't sure how to change it.

Does my controller reset whenthere's no signal?

Page 40: AT&T Router Location - Hydrawise

Yes. It is normal for Hydrawise controllers to reset if there is a problem with your signal, including signal drop or loss. This helps re-initiate a connection.

NOTE: This does not happen if your Wi-Fi signal is strong. It only happens when a poor Wi-Fi signal is receivedby the controller.
