June July August 2016What’sOn
Greetings from
Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board
Welcome to What’sOn at the Library.
Our City of Vaughan is celebrating its 25th anniversary and Canada's Library of Parliament is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. It’s an exciting time at Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) as well. May 14th marked the opening of the Civic Centre Resource Library, VPL's ninth library. To build a library is to create a life with a passion, positive consciousness and spike our imagination. It encompasses a nonstop tsunami of innovative, controversial, thought provoking fiction and non-fiction delicacies for our brain to feed and explore and experience into transformative ideas, dreams and struggles of famous and not so famous lives. This spectacular, state-of-the-art library is already a landmark situated at the corner of Major Mackenzie Drive and Keele Street. Designed with the needs of the community in mind, the LEED silver certified 36,000 sq. ft. resource library is futuristic yet welcoming. Drop by and explore all its fantastic features and services. Save the date and be sure to join us for our grand opening celebration on September 10! Explore the treasures in our new library and support VPL’s mission of offering a welcoming destination that educates, excites and empowers the Vaughan community.
Growth at VPL continues with the planning of the new Vellore Village Library, well underway. Approximately 8,000 sq. ft., this library will be attached to the existing community centre. Architect renderings of the project, as well as the floor plan are available on VPL’s Building Projects Blog. Construction is set to begin soon, and this library, VPL’s tenth branch, will open in 2017.
More great news to report – another new library will be built at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, as part of the nine-storey building that also includes a YMCA, childcare centre, gymnasium, and performing art space. As always, keep up-to-date on all the building news on VPL’s Building Projects Blog at www.vaughanpl.info/building.
We now offer you the ability to pay your library fines and fees online using a secure e-commerce tool. Log in to https://smartpay.vaughanpl.info with your library card number and PIN, and pay your fines and fees using VISA and MasterCard. VPL does not keep your credit card number and all transactions are completed through a secure, encrypted channel. The online payment is accessible from VPL’s website and online library catalogue.

Make It
What’s New
Three unique new spaces coming soon to VPL!
CREATE It – opening June 2016
The digital media lab at our newly opened Civic Centre Resource Library offers a shared creative space for everyone in the community. Creative entrepreneurs, artists and musicians will love it! The facility and equipment provide a comfortable and specialized space for Vaughan residents to develop their talents, pursue career goals and learn new skills. The lab features three distinct creation spaces with semi-professional equipment: a design space that offers 3D printers and a workstation equipped with creative software; a green room with photography and videography equipment; and a music/control room containing music production equipment, software, and musical instruments. See page 14 for program infomation.
MAKE It – opening summer 2016
The maker lab at Pierre Berton Resource Library is a place where like-minded people can gather to create, invent and collaborate. The maker lab is a community space with access to equipment and tools that support artistic expression and technical experimentation in a friendly, co-learning environment. The lab is for everyone – tinkerers, makers, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, students and inventors. It includes a variety of tools such as a 3D printer, graphic design tools, a green screen, and maker technologies such as robotics, circuitry, videography, photography and coding. For programs, visit page 12.
Learn It – opening 2017
The digital literacy lab for young children at Bathurst Clark Resource Library will include a variety of devices and platforms for our youngest customers and their caregivers. These tools will ensure children are exposed to different aspects and uses of digital technology in a fun and age appropriate space.

ADULT TEEN
Recommended Reads è èBeyond the Slingby Mayim Bialik, Ph.D. Review by Victoria Murgante, Information Assistant 649.122 Bia
Mayim’s window into “green parenting” was uplifting and sagacious, especially in a child-rearing environment of almost comically contradictory opinions. It was reassuring to read of a gentler, alternative parenting style, where love and instinct conquer popular advice. Supported by neuroscience and real-word experience, it’s an empowering book for free-thinking parents.
Uncontrollable by Mark Towhey Review by David Broughall, Adult Services Librarian 971.354105092 Ford-T
Mark Towhey was Rob Ford’s closest advisor. He responded to media questions regarding Ford’s addictions, anger problems, and the infamous crack video. Here's his account of working with and managing Ford.
Delicious! : A Novel by Ruth Reichl Review by Zena Tenenbaum, Adult Services Librarian FIC Reich
Billie Breslin arrives in NYC to take a job at the magazine Delicious. When the magazine folds she stays on to help with various tasks and also discovers a historical mystery involving archived World War II era letters to legendary chef James Beard. Part love story, mystery and a snapshot of the trendy New York food scene.
Everything I Never Told Youby Celeste Ng Review by Rachel Palmieri, Youth Services Librarian FIC Ng
When Celeste Ng’s debut novel begins, we are informed of a tragedy that will befall the Lee family. Ng writes with empathy about the dynamics of family relationships, including those things that are hard to acknowledge in ourselves: hurt, jealousy, and our ability to be the hardest on those who need us the most. But there is also love – and eventually – peace.
Forever Evil by Geoff Johns Review by Alison Neal, Youth Services Librarian YA Johns
The Justice League is gone, and all that remains is The Crime Syndicate, a villainous JL from another dimension. In order to protect their own world, some of the biggest villains in DC comics team up to take on this new threat.
Secret Coders by Gene Luen Yang & Mike Holmes Review by Urszula Jambor, Youth Services Librarian J Secre
First in a series, Secret Coders introduces us to Hopper and Eni, two kids determined to uncover the secrets of their strange school. This graphic novel packs an irreverent tween punch, all while exploring binary numbers and computer coding as keys to the adventure.
Demon Road by Derek Landy Review by Sarah Cocuzzi, Digital Creation Specialist YA FIC LANDY
Demon Road is a no holds barred thrill ride of supernatural extravagance that is deserving of its very own 80’s classic rock anthem. Think GNR’s Welcome to the Jungle. Derek Landy is the author responsible for unleashing the first installment in what will be a vividly epic YA Trilogy of Win. Meet Teen Girl Amber. Amber thinks life is just the typical every-day teen stuff. Amber is DEAD wrong.
