WELCOME FROM THE ATMS COMMITTEE

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of The Association of Trauma & Military Surgery, wewelcome you to this year’s conference in Harrogate.

We wish to thank Professor Nicholas Gair and all his colleaguesat ASGBI, as we once again hold our conference in parallel withtheir International Surgical Congress. We also offer a special voteof thanks to the Royal British Legion, whose generous financialsupport enables us to attract the highest possible calibre ofdistinguished speaker.

To deliver our 2014 keynote Guthrie Lecture, we welcome Dr David Hoyt, ExecutiveDirector of the American College of Surgeons. Tying in with the ‘Education and Innovation’theme, and alongside our friends of the International Conference on Surgical Educationand Training (ICOSET), we will be hosting a session on trauma preparedness for militarysurgeons, with perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic. There is also a session focusingon the vexed problem of violence against women and girls. We have assembled a group ofinternational speakers to deliver an overview of all the challenges facing those caring forwomen and girls subjected to violence at home and in the setting of war and conflict.

A conference highlight will be our annual dinner on Wednesday night and, this year, wewill be dining at the iconic Sun Pavilion in Harrogate, enjoying music by the Royal MarineBand. We encourage all delegates to come along with their partners/friends.

In the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War, trauma care in both thecivilian and uniformed military arenas couldn’t be more relevant. We welcome you to theTrauma & Military Surgery Conference 2014 and hope that the academic forum providedwill allow us to share advances in trauma care across the full spectrum and enable us tobuild networks for collaboration and cooperation for the future.
