Reading and the Brain

Humans are not hard-wired for reading, however, most young children learn how to read at a basic level by first grade. How does our primate brain learn how to read using preexisting neural circuitry and what happens when the reading process goes awry? This interactive course is designed for any educator who wishes to learn about the neuroscience of reading and how research and knowledge of the English Language improves classroom instruction.

Course participants will leave with a deeper understanding of phonological awareness, phonology, reading and spelling development, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and written expression. Participants will leave with practical strategies they can immediately implement with their students.

Note: Teachers working toward their Orton-Gillingham Certified level will obtain 35 hours of instruction.

The Trauma of Poverty in Early ChildhoodThe Trauma of Poverty in Early Childhood course focuses on defining, identifying and understanding poverty-related stress in early childhood development, behavior and learning. Our goal is to help children, families and programs to protect vulnerable learners and provide the knowledge and support to move forward. The course is arranged thematically:

Day 1: Poverty and its impactsDay 2: Trauma, stress and the developing brainDay 3: Developing, evaluating and designing trauma-informed learning

environmentsDay 4: Nurturing the nurturer

The structure of the learning and tasks vary each day. There will be writing assignments and discussion included each day. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of teachers and care givers using a variety of learning styles, presentations and source materials. Each day will have presentations as well as hands-on individual and group-based activities.

While the VELS standards will undergird the whole of the course, our work will focus on the following areas of direct concern in the development of trauma-informed staff and programs:

Standard 11: To best support each and every child, early childhood professionals need the knowledge and skill to design, implement, assess and adapt developmentally, culturally, linguistically, and individually appropriate practices.

Standard 12: Early childhood practices need to be evidence-based, aligned, cumulative and appropriate to each child’s developmental needs and levels.

Standard 13: Each and every child benefits from a continuous and seamless sequence of educational and developmental supports throughout early childhood to maximize their full participation and diminish the challenges of transitions. This consistency is particularly important for young children who are the most at risk.

Up Next: The Eyes Have It: Understanding the Cognitive Processes Involved in Silent Reading

May 19, 2017 | 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Participants will learn what readers’ automatic eye movements reveal about questions that are fundamental to assessing and teaching reading. Participants will learn how these research findings inform central challenges in reading instruction such as developing reading accuracy and increasing reading fluency. Finally, we will examine behavioral indicators of problems with orthographic and phonological processing that might appear during a reading assessment.

PresenterJane Ashby, Ph.D. is the co-author of “Psychology of Reading” (2016) as well as several research articles and book chapters including “Why does prosody accompany fluency? Re-conceptualizing the role of phonology in reading.” Working as an Associate Professor of Psychology at Central Michigan University, Dr. Ashby teaches and directs a laboratory that studies how cognitive processes operate in real-time during silent reading. Teaching Narrative Language and Discourse

Viewers will dive into the assessment and treatment of impairments in discourse and narrative language in school-age children. Difficulty with oral narration is frequent, even in children whose oral language is unimpaired at the sentence level. This can impact academic achievement and writing, social interactions, and even overall quality of life. This webinar will look at important background information on prevalence and consequences of impaired discourse, the importance of different genres of discourse (e.g., procedural, personal, fiction, expository, conversation), and how to assess discourse. Treatment options will be discussed, including existing curricula and individualized literature-based intervention.

Orton-Gillingham Advanced Morphology and Vocabulary $225

The English language is a morphophonological language. Therefore, teachers need to teach both phonology and morphology to enable struggling readers to unlock literacy. Understanding of morphology improves word identification, reading comprehension, spelling, and written expression. How can we teach morphology and challenge advanced students to decode and comprehend Tier II and III words? This one day workshop will cover beginning through advanced morphology from basic prefixes and suffixes to Latin grid endings and Greek combining forms. Evidenced-based strategies for teaching both morphology and vocabulary will be shared. Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of free and bound morphemes, Anglo-Saxon, Latin,

and Greek derivations, and how to explicitly teach morphological awareness while also teaching vocabulary. Come ready to dissect and play with words.

Areas to be covered:

• How to teach base words, suffixes, prefixes, Latin roots, and Greek combining forms

• Lesson progression for -ion • Latin grid endings • Selecting appropriate vocabulary words

(Tier II and Tier III words and academic vocabulary)

• Robust vocabulary instruction • What does this look like in an Orton-

Gillingham lesson? • What does this look like in a classroom?
