This week our Year 4 classes will be on camp. We wish all staff, students and parent helpers a safe and educational camp whilst at Numinbah. Chess News Late last week we were informed of the tremendous news that our school had qualified a team in the State Chess Final. This is outstanding news and a great achievement May I wish our team all the very best as they partake in the State Final this weekend. In other outstanding news we have six girls invited to attend the Girls Chess Championship in Brisbane on Friday. I am so proud of our latest chess achievements and wish Mr Butler and the students all the very best. Pupil Free Day School community members are reminded that next Monday 22 October is the final Student Free Day for the year. P and C Meeting The general meeting for the month of October is being held tonight from 7:30pm in the Administration block. All are welcome to attend.

School Parking It has been brought to my attention that several parents and carers may be using the private property adjacent to the school grounds on Forest Hill-Fernvale Road for school parking. The land behind the school is privately owned and the property owners have gratefully given permission for staff members only to park on their property for the last 30 years. This is now in jeopardy as the owners have observed first hand an increasing number of parents and Carers drive onto their land and park without their permission. In some cases cars have been observed to enter through one gate and exit driving across their property through another gate. The owners have indicated they will not tolerate this behaviour and trespassing on their land. Any parent or Carer found to be on their property will be reported for trespass to the Queensland Police. Please be respectful and do not access Private property for any school parking. No CRI for Year 4 There will be no CRI classes for Year 4 this Wednesday as Camp is on. Pancake Breakfast Term Three attendance reward will be held this Wednesday morning. Well done to all students that attended 95% or better in Term Three. Kind Regards
David
From the Deputy Principal
What a great start to the term! It was so lovely to welcome our students back last week and hear about your adventures over the holiday break! Last week I had the pleasure to accompany our teachers Keah Storta, Kim Luckman and our Head of Special Education Karen Mahon to training. One of the areas we learned about is the research in to mindsets. There is a variety of research that talks about the power of thought, self-talk and fixed vs growth mindsets. In the work of Dr Carol Dweck she talks about the power of the word ‘…Yet’. Yet, is about knowing that with hard work, determination, perseverance, and practise we can turn ‘can’t’ into ‘can’t YET’ and then into ‘CAN!’ This involves changing and encouraging children’s self-talk from “I can’t do this” to “I can’t do this yet” below are some ideas to support thinking and try at home.
From the Deputy Principal
What can I say to myself?
Instead of Try thinking
I am no good at this What am I missing?
I give up I can try some of the strategies we’ve learned
I just can’t do maths I am going to grow my maths brain
It’s good enough Is it really my best work?
This is too hard This might take some effort and practise
Research tells us that brain is like a muscle that gets stronger with use and that learning prompts neurons in the brain to grow new connections. We want children to know this so that they realise that with work, strategies and determination they know they can grow their brains. How can we help? When we praise children for their effort, hard work and strategies we encourage them to ‘grow their brains’ in a positive and supportive way. On Thursday year 3 students attended a science incursion in the school hall. The team from Street Science amazed the children with exploding balloons, burning different materials and freezing objects with liquid nitrogen. This wonderful performance helped consolidate our learning of heat energy and states of matter from science this semester. After the show the children were able to conduct their own experiments and made slime and snow. We had fun learning how heat effects the slime and blowing bubbles using our slime. “I really liked Street Science because of all the experiments and making slime and snow” Sam Tatt “My favourite part of the incursion was when we made the snow” Ruby Otto “I learnt how to make snow and slime. I also learnt that some chemicals are flammable.” Chloe Steinhardt “I learnt what happens when you light different metals on fire” Levi Burt.

We are all looking forward to the ‘Ditto’ Bravehearts program today with our Prep-Year 3 students today. Have a wonderful week! Kylie

The NATSIHS collects information about the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will ask you a range of questions face-to-face about your health and lifestyle, such as:
• visits to doctors, nurses or Aboriginal health workers • health conditions • medications • smoking • exercise • what you eat and drink
You will have the opportunity to take part in a voluntary hearing test and have some physical measurements taken, if you agree (height, weight, waist and blood pressure). For general enquiries, visit the ABS website at www.abs.gov.au/surveyinfo
