President’s LetterWhat a wonderful June we had in New Zealand and at the Club. After a visit to the Club earlier in the year from Emirates Team New Zealand, we joined everyone else in cheering them along and being enthralled by the spectacle in Bermuda. I don’t think I have ever felt so nervous as watching those races against Oracle and I was just one of millions of TV viewers, let alone anyone connected to the team. How proud they made us as a country when they won the Cup.

Club members have also enjoyed the British and Irish Lions Tour. With the team based at the Pullman Hotel opposite we have all seen the fleet of Lions emblazoned Land Rovers and buses parked opposite the Clubhouse. Large numbers of members and guests attended the Club for the Blues mid-week game and for the first test - either going on to Eden Park afterwards or watching the games on the big

screen in the Wintergarden. Similar events are planned for the next two tests.

While there may have been more media attention given to a couple of Aussie skippers in Bermuda, it was a great honour to host the Australian Governor-General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), at the Club on his first official visit to New Zealand. Sir Peter, who was attending a breakfast organised by the Trans-Tasman Business Circle and co-hosted by the Australian Trade Commission and the Australian High Commission, was an entertaining and interesting speaker. It was a privilege to meet such a great Australian.

Anyone who has been at the Club house recently will know how busy it has been with so many other activities as well. As an example, in the space of just three days during June I attended the AGM of the Northern Club Racing Syndicate followed by an enjoyable dinner for members with the trainers of our filly, Belle du Nord, Emmalee and David Browne; an informative lunch given by Club member the Hon Murray McCully who spoke about the eight year period in which he served as our Minister of Foreign Affairs; I was kindly invited as a guest of “Table One” for lunch in the Members Dining Room and it was an honour to have present member Barrie Hopkins who is nearly “90 not out”, to use a cricket term; and finishing with the successful Tequila Extravaganza evening hosted by the humorous and knowledgeable Mattie Bradley, of which some attendees may have little recollection!May I close by congratulating those Club members recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in New Zealand and in the United Kingdom and those recently appointed as Queen’s Counsel.
