Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends of the Lord.

The readings we have today should create a deep sense of gratitude in us for the gift of our faith. We have done nothing to deserve our faith. It is simply a free gift from our Heavenly Father Who is passionately in love with each and every one of us.

I used to think it would have been nice to have lived at the time of the apostles and to have travelled with Jesus to see first hand how He treated others. Now, however, I am glad I am alive at this time. We have more than 2000 years of experience with Chris-tianity and have witnessed the great good that the carpenter from Nazareth has spread to all those who come to Him and listen to His message of love and acceptance of all His creatures as the real way to experience the peace and joy of our salvation.

It is a mistake to overlook the great evil that has been done in His name by those who pervert His call to love and not to judge those who are different from ourselves. In the 20th century two horrible wars broke out between supposedly Christian countries, each side of which was convinced that it was good and the other was evil. Did you know that Hitler would never have become Germany’s ruler if he had not received the support of the Catholic political party, whose own leaders were all too willing to overlook the hateful policies spelled out in his autobiography.

That reality notwithstanding, however, Our Lord is always ready to welcome us back when we lose sight of our real faith. Just as he reached out to Peter to save him from drowning when he began to doubt even while he was walking on water, He is always ready to reach out to us in our own brokenness and welcome us back on our spiritual journey towards Heaven. It is in our very brokenness that Jesus gets to show us His great love and mercy. All He wants from us is to show that same kind of love and mercy to one another, especially to those with whom we may disagree.

One of the best ways to move in that direction is to imitate Elijah in listening for the voice of God in the quiet ordinariness of our daily lives. Better still, we can imitate Je-sus who took time alone to pray with His Father away from worldly distractions. If He Himself needed this solitude how can we think any different?

God bless.

Deacon Brian

Book: Rediscover Jesus

Chapter 33: Comfortably Comfortable

One of the greatest temptations in life is to get comfortable. Is the comfortable path the way of the Christian? No! Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Jesus didn’t promise an easy path. He didn’t promise comfort. He doesn’t want us to forget that we are just passing through this world. We can learn to deny ourselves as a spiritual exercise to become more Christ-like. read . Kelly, Matthew. PEACEMAKERS St. Clare

The story of St. Clare is inevitably linked with her com-panion and mentor, St. Francis. St. Clare endeavored to be a reflection of Christ. She said, “Christ is the way and Francis showed it to me.” She left her wealthy family after she heard Francis give a series of Lenten sermons. She soon formed her own group of women who wanted to live in prayer and poverty. She continued to serve the poor all her life. The Sisters are now called the Poor Clares who have convents and monasteries throughout the world.

Quote: “Place your mind before the mirror of eternity. Place your soul in the brilliance of glory. And transform your entire being into the image of the Godhead itself through prayer.”

New Altar Server’s Needed! Dear Parents/Guardians of Fourth grade students or Higher grade:We would like to invite your child (ren) to become Altar Servers for the Queen of Apostles Parish. I hope you encourage and allow to them to join in this service. It will take their time from both you and them. However, it will be a beautiful way for your child (ren) to express their active participation in the life of the Church and learn how to become a responsible member of the church. I hope that you consider our invitation and share it with your child (ren). The plan is to have the training on August 19th from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM. After the training has been completed, your child (ren) will “shadow” one of the current more Senior level Servers to gain a better sense of this Ministry. If you and your child (ren) are interested, please contact the Parish office at 408.253.7560. God Bless!
