From the Head of School Happy Friday,

Though it may be weeks away, St. Mary’s faculty and staff are picking up the pace with our preparations for Back to School. This week has been full of strategic meetings regarding this year’s Orientation, safety in our community, STEM programs and opportunities and more. Visitors to the school may notice even more fresh paint!

Yesterday, Cardinal Seán celebrated a mass to honor Superintendent Mary Grassa O’Neill’s five-year tenure at the Catholic Schools Office. Headmistress Regan, Principal DiFabio and Campaign Director Jen Pearce represented St. Mary’s. We presented Mary with a book and a bracelet in honor of the Blessed Mother, blessed by Fr. Brian at St. Mary’s. We thank Mary for her fidelity and leadership at St. Mary’s!

In an effort to address changing staffing needs, particularly with regard to our pending NEASC evaluation and in consultation with representatives of the Board, department chairs, teachers, and Dr. DiFabio, we made some adjustments to current roles. Jade Henne is now the Assistant Principal for Academics and Student Life and Artie Gribbins is the Assistant Principal for Technology Integration.

STEM

PROJECT LEAD THE WAYSt. Mary’s is pleased to bring Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to the Marian Division next year! PLTW is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education curricular programs used in middle and high schools across the U.S.

We are excited to introduce PLTW in two classes next year: Design & Modeling and Automation & Robotics. Teacher Dominick Steadman

attended the Core Training for PLTW at WPI in early August. He returned to St. Mary’s ready to bring STEM to life for the seventh- and eighth-graders in his classroom come September. See what Mr. Steadman built during his training:

The Board of Directors has set tuition for the 2013-14 academic year at $9,950 for High School and $7,350 for Marion Division. It does not include incidental fees.

Families have the option of paying tuition in one of two ways.

Option 1: Full Payment through FACTS*

Option 2: Ten Month Plan through FACTS*

Families must be enrolled in a FACTS payment plan by June 15, 2013.

The FACTS Tuition Plan is an automatic payment plan made through your checking account or savings account or credit card. There is a 2.5% processing fee if you choose to pay via credit card. Those choosing the monthly payment plan will be obliged to sign a form authorizing your bank to make automatic monthly payments to FACTS. Your account will be debited by FACTS on the 5th or the 20th of each month.

Additionally, all incidental fees will be presented through FACTS throughout the school year.

Missed Tuition Payments

As part of the Digital Citizenship | School Store communication in early June, there was an announcement regarding the change in the payment process for school fees starting in the 2013–14 school year. With the school store officially closed, all school fees will be paid using the FACTS system. We are communicating with you in advance to ensure that you plan accordingly for the payment of these fees in mid-August to minimize any issues with the fee payment process.

In order to use the FACTS system, you must activate the FACTS account that was set up for you as part of the tuition payment process in mid-June. For those that have already activated your account, thank you! You have already provided FACTS with the payment account information for all payments to St. Mary’s. This information is securely stored in the FACTS system and is not accessed by anyone at St. Mary’s.

If you have not activated your account, please do so immediately. As part of the activation process you provide and authorize FACTS to charge your bank or credit card for payments to St. Mary’s. All payments will be posted to the FACTS systems, so this will be your source to track balances due to the school and payment information.

The steps for the process are as follows:

1. Fees will be loaded into the FACTS system based on your child’s or children’s grade level

2. Payments for fees will be scheduled to be withdrawn from the same account tuition payments are made from using the FACTS system

3. The target date for fee payments is August 15

4. There will be a follow-up process for any payment issues that may be subject to the FACTS payment penalty fee of $30.00 and any additional fees from your bank

Fee Definitions

There have been some questions about the communicated fee charges that are being billed and paid via the FACTS system on August 15. Below are brief descriptions for each of the fees to help you understand what they cover. All fees in the past would have been paid for by parents in the school store at the time you purchased your student’s books. There is only one new fee this year (Mobility Fee) and all other fees existed in prior years.

The fee definitions are as follows:

1. Technology Fee (was the Keyboard Fee) This fee existed last year and is to cover all the text books used in Computer Science classes (Grades 6–9).

2. Art Fee This fee existed last year is and is to contribute to the costs of supplies used in Art class (Grades 6, 7 & 10)

3. Senior Art Fee This fee existed last year is and is to contribute to the costs of supplies used by the student in Art class (Grade 12 only). There are a limited number of students taking the class, thus the reason for the higher fee.

4. Testing Fees This is the fee for the standardized testing given in late fall each year.

5. Mobility Fee This is a new fee for the software currently being installed as part of the iPad registration process at St. Mary’s. The software is used for communicating and sharing data between the school and the students via their iPad. This is the first year the fee has been assessed.

6. Science Books To cover the costs of science text books that are not in an e-book format. The fee is for four books, one for each marking period.

7. College Fair Fees charged to offset the transportation costs for juniors to attend college fairs.

8. Yearbook Cost of a yearbook for Marian Division and junior/senior yearbooks. Junior high yearbooks are given to all students, whereas the fee covers the high school yearbook for junior and senior classes.

9. Graduation Fee This fee is to cover the cost of your student’s cap and gown for the graduation ceremony as well as other costs incurred as part of the graduation ceremony.

ST. MARY'S SUMMER READING FORM

As your teacher for the new school year, I can't wait to get to know you, what you think, and how you feel about

things. One way that will help me learn about you is to find out your personal reactions to what you read.

Using the heading below and the instructions and examples given, complete your double-entry response journals on

loose-leaf paper. You need to keep a journal for each book that you read this summer. You need a minimum of ten

excerpts from each book you read.

These excerpts should span the entire length of the book. They should cover the beginning, middle and end of the

book. Obviously, your personal responses should be the longest part of each entry.

These journals will be collected by the various subject teachers on the first full day of classes. These jOUrnAls

Acceptable

I chose this passage because I could definitely picture

the sloop in my mind. I could see the boat barely moving

in the water as the tide was going out. Also, I love the

author’s choice of words like loitering, this really makes

the sail seem as if it’s just hanging around, the way a flag

hangs off a flagpole when there’s no wind.

Unacceptable

when my family and I go to Cape Cod I love to sit on the

beach and watch the boats go by.

character dialog. A text excerpt is defined as something that strikes you as important or meaningful. place this

The right column is used for commenting (YOUr nOTes) on the QUOTes. personal reactions, questions, anaylsis

go here. These comments on the right may include:
