On Saturday, July 16, Birch Family Pharmacy celebrated the Grand Opening of it’s second location.

The Pharmacy is now open at 213 East Main Street in Grantsville, inside Soelberg’s Market. The Grand Opening celebration included food, drinks, a bounce house, face painting, a caricature artist, and lots of free giveaways! Five ways aTobacco-free workplace will have a positive impactPromoting and supporting a tobacco-free work-

place makes good business sense. The impact of smoking and secondhand smoke on your bottom line can be significant.

1) It will lower your costs: Businesses pay an aver-age of $2,189 in workers’ compensation costs for smokers, compared with $176 for nonsmokers. Smoking costs employers an estimated $3,383 per smoker per year, comprised of $1,623 in direct medical expenditures and $1,768 in lost produc-tivity. The National Fire Protection Association found that in 1998, smoking materials caused 8,700 fires in nonresidential structures, resulting in direct property damage of $60.5 million. Fire insurance is commonly reduced 25% to 30% in smoke-free businesses.

2) Reduce your liability: Having a smoke-free workplace reduces the risk of lawsuits being filed by employees who become ill from breathing secondhand smoke. Disability claims based on secondhand smoke exposure are eliminated. A smoke-free workplace prevents violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act which can oc-cur when people with respiratory problems have limited access or cannot patronize or work in your

business due to tobacco smoke pollution. 3) Protect your employee’s health: Reduce the risk

of lung cancer; employees exposed to secondhand smoke on the job are 12% to 19% more likely to get lung cancer. Reduce heart attacks; exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of a heart attack by 25% to 35%. Help reduce heart disease and upper respiratory infections by eliminated exposure to secondhand smoke.

4) Reduce absenteeism: Smokers, on average, miss 6.2 days of work per year due to sickness com-pared to nonsmokers, who miss 3.9 days of work per year.

5) Increase productivity and morale: Employees who take four 10-minute breaks a day to smoke actually work about three weeks less per year than workers who don’t take smoking breaks. A tobac-co-free workplace is more attractive to employees, since 90% of Utah adults do not smoke.

Senior citizens are, unfortunately, some-times a forgotten and neglected group of our population. What we should remem-

ber is that our senior citizens once were and continue to be great contributors to our society. They are a group that deserves our recognition and gratitude for all that they have done to pre-pare the way for the younger generations and to make the world a better place.

The Tooele County Commission recognizes the greatness of our aging members of society and wants to make sure their needs are met. With that in mind, Tooele County pursued and won a $74,357 grant to fund the much needed remodel and upgrade project at the Grantsville Senior Citizens Center.

“It’s taken all of the County Commission’s efforts to get this accomplished. Commissioner Hurst is on the CDBG Board, Commissioner Johnson has a high interest in the senior popu-lation, and this has been one of my major goals,” said Commissioner Bruce Clegg.

Tooele County Aging Director, Josh Maher, administered the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application. Maher said the county sought this grant for many years. This year they pursued the grant differently. In-stead of proposing several small projects, only the Senior Center project was pursued.

Commissioner Jerry Hurst was highly in-volved in the CDBG application process. “The grant application took a lot of time and effort. It goes through a long review by the rating and ranking committee. We had the highest ranking project. It worked out good for us,” Hurst said.

Maher said the county got high grant points for large contributions from other sources. Tooele County pledged a $10,000 match and the Grantsville Seniors also pledged a $10,000 match. With both pledges and the grant amount there is a total of $94,357.50 for the renovation project. Maher said, “We’re getting a big bang for our bucks.”

Commissioner Colleen Johnson said, “It’s something they’ve needed for a long time. The Center Board has raised money to put towards the upgrades, which gives them some owner-

ship in the project. We’re trying to incorporate their ideas into the remodel.”

The remodel project will involve removing two of

the walls around the dining area, opening the room up into the existing foyer and hallway. That will add about 40 percent to the dining area, creating a larger space that will accommo-date more people.

Outside of the center the project includes replacing uneven sidewalks, installing more ramps from the parking areas, removing trees that drop limbs onto sidewalks, and installing a handrail.

Commissioner Clegg said, “Originally we wanted to put an addition onto the north side of the building, but with the struggling economy and state and federal funding cutbacks, we need to keep the renovation project manageable while at the same time maintaining the high level of senior citizen services, especially our food programs.”

Maher is excited about the changes that will take place. “Well, it just removes some of the deterrents for some of the people to go to the Senior Center. They go in now and see how crowded it is and leave. The biggest hope is people will feel welcome and come in and participate. It’s also a big hope we can prevent accidents from happening either from over-crowding or unsafe conditions outside,” Maher said.

Because it’s a federally funded project the county has to follow a restrictive bid process, ensuring that the winning contractors meet specific labor conditions. The county hopes to move forward with this project in the fall, pos-sibly early October. Maher said he will prob-ably have to close the center for no more than one week. He will either be transporting seniors to the Tooele Senior Center or looking for an alternative location in Grantsville for that week of construction.

Grantsville Senior Center Project

The Modish Place became an opening to me to gain a lot of local friends...I got here in America barely 19 months ago, straight from

the Philippines. Now that The Modish Place has found it’s new address at 26 West Vine Street, we can provide a good parking area and truly a very good location to reckon with.

The Modish Place was first housed in the base-ment of the Clayton Tower at the corner of South-east of Vine and Main Streets... and viola, this was just a month ago. While the place is nice and the landlady is so kind, the building caters more to offices than a boutique. I received many feed backs from relatives and friends as well as customers that although the store offers cool and high quality clothes, shoes, purses (and more) for men, women and kids too, the location was not conducive for a clothing store. Of course I knew this from the very start. When I started up this business, I was only testing the water. The three weeks that I stayed in that building served as my training and exposure. The day to day encounter with local Tooele residents gave me insights on how to serve them better not only for providing them with high quality clothing apparels but also with genuine Filipino hospitality.

This store came to materialize primarily because of the support of my husband Rey Sebastian, and the inspirations I get from my three kids, Margott, Matthew and Marcus as well as my immediate fam-ily in the Philippines. I also would like to acknowl-edge the support I get as always from my Ate Nena who lives in California. My sisters and brothers- in- law here in Tooele did so much too for this store. Thanks to the consignees who bring good stuff every now and then. Although I get clothes and other items mainly from my friends and relatives in California, Las Vegas and New York, the local consignees are accessible and they help save costs of shipping and handling.

Many of us who have to drive all around the mountain for at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours just to get to the mall to buy items that are not available in our area, spend gas money and of course more often than not, food money too, will now have a choice to visit The Modish Place first before going outside of our own backyard. In this case, shopping locally helps build our community. Come and see The Modish Place and discover the wide variation of stuff to choose from and I will always have a warm welcome to you all!
