AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010 We’re All Connected! By the time you read this, David, Ryan and I will be ready to fly to Dresden for a time of sabbatical renewal and mission. (We depart August 2, after we say “Auf Wiedersehen” to you during worship and fellowship hour on August 1.) I have been in e-mail contact with a friendly German pastor in Dresden, and I checked his church’s website to see that they have a lovely courtyard and 4 different bands within their congregation! I look forward to meeting him soon. Last week in worship, we had as guests a German family who were visiting relatives in Willow Grove. I took their address, which is 150 miles from Dresden, and said we might surprise them one Sunday at their village Methodist church. My German was rusty, but it worked, and they told me they felt at home in our service. These are just two ways I’ve recently been aware of our wonderful and valuable United Methodist connection. Even the local and international news highlights our care for the world and God’s people. The two tragic stories that involved United Methodists occurred because we are trying to build bridges of peace and friendship. In one instance, a group of visiting Hungarian youth joined their American counterparts on the fateful duck boat ride. In a second event, U.M. missionaries were victims of a bomb attack in Uganda during World Cup soccer. There is also good news about our connectional system making a difference. Haiti's UMCOR field office has re-opened, and given significant grants to help in many ways. And of course, our own ASP missionaries will have returned from helping a poverty-stricken West Virginia community by offering their time and talent. These connections define us as United Methodists, inspired by our founder John Wesley, who said, “All the world is my parish,” and as Christians, led by Jesus to “go and make disciples of everyone.” If you would like to receive my e-mail updates from Germany, send an e-mail to [email protected] with “Pastor’s Updates” in the subject line. Amy will post a copy on the bulletin board, as well. I look forward to staying connected. In the meantime, God be with you. Please give a warm welcome to The Rev. Susan Cole while I’m away. I’ll see you in church on October 31! -Pastor Cyndi We've received the information about our Charge Conference for this year. This is the official annual meeting of each congregation with the District Superintendent or designated Elder for worship, voting and planning for the future. On Tuesday, November 23, SPRC will meet with the District Superintendent at 6:30 p.m. Charge Conference will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Charge Conference will focus on our church's fruitfulness in ministry. How are we reaching new disciples for Jesus Christ? What do we have to celebrate? How have we offered the gospel through words and through acts of love in Christ's name? We've been asked by District Superintendent Dorothy Watson Tatem to bring specific examples to talk about. Last year's Charge Conference was challenging, stimulating and inspiring. I hope many of you will come this year. Everyone is welcome!

LETTERS TO OUR CONGREGATION

Thank you! Special thanks to leaders of our church, Blanche and Howard Erwin, Ted Abel, Marilu Skilton, Gayle Wieand, and especially Pastor Cyndi, for the surprise and gifts on Father’s Day. I am so happy that the beautiful dogwood was planted on our front lawn for my honor as the oldest leader in our church. It joins all the other dogwoods, azaleas, and hostas that I planted many years ago. Bill Woehr Dear Church, I wanted to thank you for the time and energy you have spent with my daughter, Madelyn Page, and her involvement with the Youth Group. Our church does not have a youth group now and it is great that you have opened yours to her. She has enjoyed the times she could come and has enjoyed the friendships. In particular, I wanted to thank you for the dinner Sunday evening, where you recognized the graduates and encouraged them. It was great to hear how they were challenged to be involved in fellowship while at their prospective colleges. Thanks, Jeff Page Dear Pastor Cyndi and Church family, Thank you for your prayers, cards and visits to my mother Jackie Cooper during her recent illness. Her recovery is slow but each day she is improving. It means so much to her and myself to have the support of Pastor Cyndi and the church family. May God Bless each and every one of you. Cheryl DelSordo

Dear Friends, Thank you for the rosebud, package and best wishes on the birth of our son, Jack. Rachel loved the book and the baby shawl is beautiful and much appreciated. We hope to see everyone soon! Thanks again, Matthew and Susan Stopper

Dear Pastor Cyndi, Aldersgate would like to thank you and your congregation for your recent donation that was collected for Senator Greenleaf and Family to help out with their house fire. We deeply appreciate your continued support of our mission to promote both positive healthy relationships and healthy living in the community through our programs and services. We will be acknowledging this donation to the Greenleaf Family. We absolutely could not assist our community with this degree of realistic, solid impact without the willing and openhearted charity of caring citizens such as you and your members. Sincerely, Deborah Sapin-Feldstein Submitted by the Girl Scouts: We so appreciate the use of your church for our meetings. I strive to honor this by teaching the girls to love God and Country and to help others. Donna Hayward, Troop Leader 775 •Thanks for your church! •Thanks for letting the Girl Scouts use your church on Mondays and special occasions. •Thank you for your generosity. •Thanks you for allowing the Girl Scouts to meet in your church! •Thanks for letting us be here! The girls of Troop 775

As Pastor Cyndi and Family are away with our blessings, the Church Family will give their full support to Pastor Susan. More Musings from “Awanna” the Church mouse, as again with gratitude and thanks for: - Watering of the lawn etc. before 7:00 am. - Notes of care sent to those as needed. - Teaching materials provided. - Set-up of Fellowship Hall and Lounge as needed. - Sons and daughters being part of our service. - The support shown for ASP and those that give of their time.

SPECIAL REQUEST FROM THE CHURCH OFFICE: While Pastor Cyndi is away on her sabbatical leave, please be sure to communicate meetings, events, and any other things that need to be on the church calendar to the church office. The busy fall is fast approaching and I don’t want to miss anything. Usually Pastor Cyndi is on top of things and we go over the calendar together every month, but while she is not here, I would prefer to hear about an event 3 times from 3 different people, than to not hear about it and have a room double booked or not have the event on the master calendar. If you need a room reservation form, feel free to ask me. Together we’ll make it happen. Thank you so much! –Amy Gardner

A BIG THANK YOU! To those who participated in the Blood Drive this year! The American Red Cross collected 20 pints of blood, which can save up to 60 lives! We had donors from church, the neighborhood, the daycares as well as the gentleman who was working on the organ. What a blessing!

PRAYER GROUP RESUMES on Wednesday, September 15. Meetings are held from 10:00 to 11:00 am in the Lounge every Wednesday morning. All are invited to join this group.

BIBLE STUDY RESUMES on Wednesday, September 15. Meetings are held immediately following the Prayer Group from 11:00 am to 12:00noon in the Lounge

DEADLINE FOR SUNDAY BULLETIN All articles for the Sunday Bulletin Announcements must be in by noon Wednesday. Any articles received after this will be considered for the following Sunday’s announcements. DISABILITY TASK FORCE These individuals have expressed an interest in working on areas in our church and in our community where we can service those with disabilities better: Karen Dufala, Kim Hunt, Ted Abel, Pastor Cyndi, Jenny Hyde. We will do a survey of our church facilities, select a few areas where we will begin making improvements, and then begin to move ahead as the church sees the need. Special needs that are currently present within our church are hearing impaired, visually impaired, autism, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and intellectually gifted. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Jenny Hyde for information already distributed and then watch the bulletin for the next meeting, which will probably take place in late August or early September. Jenny Hyde (215-659-9067 or [email protected] - je_hyde zero zero one) INNABAH CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE IS DECEMBER 11. HOMETOUCH Many thanks to Doris Hardcastle, Charles Sievers, Caroline Schwab, and Terry Crawford for their assistance in distributing the monthly “Hometouch” to our seniors and members who are unable to attend our worship services. Each month, 4 or 5 pages are distributed with “Meditations” and “Activities.” These mental puzzles and activities are welcome and appreciated by all who receive them. If you know someone who may benefit from “Hometouch,” please contact Bill Woehr at 215-343-0907. INTERFAITH FOOD CUPBOARD The Prayer Group asks for your help with collecting food items for the Interfaith Food Cupboard (located at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Abington). Items especially needed are peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce and pasta, canned ravioli and similar products, cereal, powdered milk, canned tuna, canned meats and stews, paper towels, facial tissues and toilet tissue. Please do not bring soups and canned vegetables as they have an over-abundance of these items. The Food Cupboard cannot accept expired items, dented cans, or open packages. There will be a basket in the Narthex for your donations on Communion Sunday each month. Members of the Prayer Group will deliver the items. OUR UNITED METHODIST CHURCH FOUNDATION OFFERS many financial planning resources online, if you have access to a computer. To see some of them, go to www.giftlegacy.com. For example, at Personal Planner, you can learn how to meet your current financial planning goals and objectives. Read about estate planning alternatives including wills and trusts that can help you plan your future. Discover ways to care for your family and help charity. There is also a Free Wills Kit available to help you create an effective will. MANY THOUGHTFUL CHRISTIANS tithe through their will or estate plan. A bequest or planned gift can continue your valuable support for the ministry of Willow Grove United Methodist Church. If you are considering a gift of stock, life insurance, real estate or other property, please talk with the pastor, an attorney, accountant or other advisor for guidance.

First: Why you should try to learn something new every day:

1. It’s fun and easy. 2. It keeps your mind active, which helps you

stay younger and feel younger. 3. It makes you more interesting. 4. Which will get you more interesting friends. 5. It helps make you more creative.

This is great advice for all of us. So, look what coming to Sunday School this year can do for you! We have classes for everyone ages 1 year through 100+ years. See you in Sunday School this fall. Help make 2010 the year we once again grow our Sunday School.

Second: The next meeting of the Spiritual Formation Ministries team is Monday, August 23, at 7:00. Location to be announced. Third, Don't miss the boat! Join us for a continental breakfast for Rally Day and Promotion Sunday at 9:30 in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, September 12. Everyone is invited for the light fare, the fellowship, and the short program -- all to welcome everyone back to Sunday School for the "new year." Come sail into fall with us -- new lessons, new opportunities, new relationships with old friends. SAVE THE DATE. We will have our annual White Gift service on Sunday, December at 5 pm with crafts, a light supper and a program. More details to follow!

THE HOUR OF WoRMSHIP Our September through December themes have not been determined yet but be assured we will continue with our station rotation which includes Beaker Bog (science), Bon Appetit (cooking & eating), Churchopoly (games & activities), Creation (arts & crafts), Laptop Lab & Rated G for God (computer activities & movies), Once Upon a Bible (drama, storytelling, role playing), WGOD-FM (music). House of Worship A Few Fun Facts About Honeyland Day Care Honeyland Day Care is an independent child care facility located in our church building. It provides a crucial service to our neighborhood families who need safe, affordable full-day care while they work or go to school. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me,” and the child care programs in our building (including Honeyland and Circle of Friends) help us live out that mission. Here are a few things you might not know about one of the programs housed here. - Pastor Cyndi ●Honeyland was started in Abington in 1975 by Inge King with 10 children. It moved to WGUM in 2006 with 36 children. Today it serves 88 children; 10 of them live on Church and Cherry Streets, and several more attend our church. Honeyland has created jobs for 20 people. ●Honeyland is a member of Kiwanis, PACCA, NAEYC and the Willow Grove Chamber of Commerce. As a business, it pays federal, state and local corporate taxes. ●The center provides a competitive salary, medical benefits, reduced tuition and a 401K program to its

employees. It also provides a scholarship program for the employees to fund 90% of their education. ●They serve many low income families, including 28% who are on the state subsidized program. ●It is a self-sufficient tenant in our building, supplying their own soap, paper towels, cleaning supplies, light bulbs and paper, as well as making minor classroom repairs, and cleaning rugs, hallways and bathrooms. They help pay for playground woodchips and upkeep, and of course, they pay rent. ●They allow us to distribute flyers regarding Church events, and support Church functions such as fundraisers, and mission collections. ●Although not religiously affiliated with any organization, the program incorporates basic Christian values such as kindness, sharing, love for one another and respect. ●In the last 2 years, staff, parents and children have participated in the Vacation Bible School and the Hatboro Parade Church float. ●They developed their own school curriculum to support the academic standards of both Abington and Upper Moreland School districts. Over 98% of the pre-k class is academically prepared for kindergarten.

THE DOERS GROUP Submitted by Howard Erwin

The Doers will begin their 2010/2011 season on Thursday, September 9 at 11:00 am in the church lounge. We will be making plans for the coming year. Please bring ideas for future programs and contact information. Also at our September 9 meeting we will celebrate everyone's birthday. Bring a baby or toddler picture of yourself. We will try and guess who the baby is now. Bring a sandwich or salad. Beverage and birthday cake will be provided. We meet on the second and fourth Thursday of most months. Visitors and new members who are 55+ are always welcome! Come join us for fun and fellowship. The program for September 23 will be announced later.

TRUSTEES Submitted by Ken Graupner

On the morning of July 13th, Willow Grove had more than five inches of rain in three hours. A large amount of water came into the fellowship hall. Many thanks to those who spent several hours vacuuming and mopping it up and assessing the situation: Ken Graupner, Bob Mathers. Robbie Mathers and Al Sharman. The lounge is an attractive area where many groups meet. Recently, two costly maintenance items were incurred in conjunction with the lounge. First, lighting was improved with the installation of lights over the table area. Second, a new air conditioning unit replaced the non-functioning original unit. The trustees appreciate the work Don Petrunis did to make the lounge comfortable. The next major item on the trustees “to-do list” is parking lot maintenance and repair. In several places, the top surface has broken off completely. Major patchwork needs to be done, and cracks filled and sealed. In addition, the parking space stripes require repainting before they disappear. All of this urgently needs to be taken care of prior to the onset of cold weather. If funding is manageable, the work will be done the last week in August, before many church activities resume for the fall. The trustees and finance committee have met several times with our neighbors. The neighbors, who need the

availability of the parking, recognize their responsibility for supporting a portion of the upkeep. We look forward to a positive on-going relationship. As the summer progresses, the trustees ask for your continual help with these building items:

• Air-conditioners need to be turned off or the thermostat turned up so the unit shuts down. • Lights need to be turned off when you leave a room or hallway. It’s easy for the next occupants to turn them on. This includes the ladies’ and men’s rooms. • Doors need to be closed, including interior doors, which contain smoke and fire in an emergency. Push exterior doors closed to be certain they latch.

Please notify the church office if you notice any maintenance items that require attention. Thanks for your help.

UNITED METHODIST MEN Submitted by Bill Woehr

Plans are under way for a fall/October Take-Out Chicken Dinner. With your help in selling tickets for this event, we may continue to provide another $1000 to and for our church

needs. Look for the date – last Wednesday of October. We are supporting one of our own United Methodist Men, Joe Roberto, who is serving in Young Life – ministering to youth of military personnel in Fort Bragg, SC. Contact Bill Woehr if you can and wish also to support him in prayer and financial help. He needs our support each month. Last year we only provided $300, and he certainly will welcome our continued support.

Save UPC symbols from Campbell's bean products, soup and juices, gravies and Pepperidge Farm items. The UPC symbols can earn funds to help buy equipment for missions and schools. Please leave them in the box marked "United Methodist Women" in the Narthex.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD. Now is the time to starting thinking about filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a project of the evangelism organization, Samaritan's Purse. Operation Christmas Child is a missions project for everyone - individuals, families, and churches. Shoeboxes are filled with small gifts to bring joy and hope to children living in countries (including the United States) wracked with war, poverty, and disaster. Boxes are for children - ages 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 and marked for a girl or boy. Suggested gifts include: school supplies, wrapped hard candy, combs, small picture books, small toys, and flashlights. Please do NOT include GUNS or OTHER WAR RELATED ITEMS, liquids (bubbles, shampoo), or used items. The cost for covering the shipping is $7. The boxes will be collected early in November. We need shoeboxes and especially MEN'S SHOEBOXES ( not boot boxes) to pack the items. Boxes can be left in Room 201.

FROM THE YOUTH COORDINATOR Submitted by Tom Gardner

It's hard to believe summer is already drawing to a close! We've had a great time over the last few months -- Graduation, mini-golf, and lots of swimming and relaxing while school's out. As we get geared up for fall, don't get left out of all the exciting activities we have coming up. August 7 we're going to the zoo, August 22, we're going ice skating (the whole church is invited!) and mid-September, we're going to welcome the new school year with a one night canoe trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Whatever your skill level with a canoe, come out and join us for a fun, relaxed 2 days on the Mullica River. As always, stay tuned to the bulletin for more announcements and details as events get closer, and if you haven't been to Youth Group before, please come and check us out this year! Anyone between 6th -12th grades is welcome! We also meet regularly
