Experience the city of the future

7

Visualising disruptive forcesCase study:

VR experience (CG interactive)

What’s the situation? The world is changing at a faster pace than ever. The five megatrends, including technological advancements, threaten business models but also offer opportunities for those willing to engage with and understand them.

What we did…

As a technology-enabled firm at the forefront of helping clients understand and respond to these emerging technologies, we created a VR experience that allows our clients to explore and understand the range of potential future disruptions that could affect their businesses such as megadrones, robotics and synthetic biology, as well as non-technology megatrends such as social and climate change.

How did it do?Communicating the possible future is difficult by only talking about it and providing written materials and other 2D media. Through the medium of virtual reality, we transported over 1,000 users across all industries to this potential world, helping them to build a much stronger understanding and appreciation for how the future might look and how it could affect their business.

Collaborating on a virtual oil refinery

8

Health & safety and operational trainingCase study:

VR platform (CG interactive)

What’s the situation?A client in the oil and gas sector was looking for a cost-effective way to train staff to complete hands-on tasks in a realistic hazardous environment without the risk of physical harm.

What we did…

We created a virtual oil refinery where users can interact with other participants potentially in different locations around the world to work as a team to identify and fix a carbon monoxide leak.

How did it do?The benefits of running this virtual reality training simulation included:- Cost saving: Reduced costs of travel, hiring venues

and setting up environments with actors and props. Additionally, business operations are not affected.

- Time saving: Travel time is eliminated as the scenario can be run almost anywhere

- Increased effectiveness: Performing physical actions in a distraction-free virtual environment enables greater retention of information. This leads to a more effective learning experience compared to traditional eLearning or 2D video courses.

Training soft skills in different scenarios

9

Soft skills learning and developmentCase study:

VR platform (CG interactive)

What’s the situation? While today’s learning and development (L&D) curriculum includes advanced tools that can track employee performance for high-volume and/or high-risk activities, it does not accurately reflect real world scenarios, forcing employees to learn soft skills on the job.

What we did…

In order to develop skills in leadership, customer service, sales and empathy building, PwC used a virtual reality capability for creating and deploying realistic scenarios for trainees to practice challenging interactions. Users experienced an AI-driven virtual character powered with speech recognition and natural language processing that listens and responds as programmed by learning designers.

How did it do?The experience helped equip learners with independent, on-demand training, allowing them to practice and build confidence and empathy in challenging situations.

Experience a Cyber Crisis in an organisation

10

Leadership Cyber Crisis Immersion Case study:

VR experience (360 interactive)

What’s the challenge?Leadership don’t always necessarily understand the pressures, roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders dealing with a cyber crisis. The importance of pressured decision making by stakeholders in the midst of a cyber crisis are often overlooked.

What we did…

We worked with incident response and crisis management specialists from the UK Cyber Team to create a ransomware attack from real life case studies. Users are able to experience the pressures of a cyber attack from the role of either the CEO, CFO or CISO, with decisions from each scenario affecting the storyline. The VR experience was launched in May 2019 at the GRP Summit with 270 PwC Partners attending.

How did it do?The immersive and impactful nature of virtual reality technology allows the experience to be extremely effective in engaging non-cyber specialists in a technical subject. The feedback has been exceptional with many of the Partners already enquiring about how they can showcase the experience to their clients.

Shifting leadership mindset at a global bank

11

Leadership change management and trainingCase study:

VR experience (360 passive)

What’s the situation? The UK arm of a global bank had challenging growth and quality targets in an uncertain and challenging market. Achieving these targets would require an engaged and productive workforce, and a working environment that fosters inclusion to bring diversity of thought to customer solutions. However, within the business, employee engagement was failing, attrition was increasing, and there was little diversity in leadership positions.

What we did…

Over a period of 8 weeks, we worked closely with the client to create a realistic narrative of the cultural state of the bank and develop this into a virtual reality experience which we delivered to 100 of its leaders with the objective of driving a case for change.

How did it do?The immersive and impactful nature of virtual reality technology meant the experience was extremely effective in engaging with the client’s leadership, identifying issue areas, and driving richer conversations around how to tackle these areas.

Discussing business and legal aspects of VR/AR

12

Business and legal VR/AR reportCase study:

Written report

What’s the situation? As an emerging technology, VR/AR is sometimes difficult for organisations to navigate and there are few public sources to help. PwC was commissioned by Digital Catapult to produce a report to help tackle these issues.

What we did…

The report (link here) brings together strategic and legal insight in simple terms to help VR/AR companies grow, and gives organisations with an interest in immersive technology the basic knowledge to feel confident exploring VR/AR solutions. It analyses the VR/AR industry and examines its current state and likely future in the short, medium and long term.

How did it do?In addition to the thousands of views the report page received, it was used by the Augmentor accelerator programme to support the growth of its VR/AR startups. It was also referenced by the Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance.
