9:30 a.m.Refreshment Break
10:00 a.m.Cleaning Parts After Thermal DeburringEthan Mueller, KYZEN Corp.
During the thermal deburring process, parts are coated in a thick and generally undesired iron-oxide coating. When this coating needs to be removed, aqueous cleaning tends to be called upon. Choosing the correct cleaning agent and wash equipment is necessary to ensure thorough cleaning, achieve reasonable bath life and prevent bottlenecking. A well-designed process can effectively remove iron-oxide coating in high volume. Two aqueous cleaning methods for thermally deburred parts will be covered in this presentation.
10:30 a.m.Study of Rinsability of Aqueous Cleaners for Oxygen Service ApplicationsYangsheng Zhang, BHC Inc.
High level cleanliness is important in many applications, notably in oxygen service systems where the hardware is used to transport, store and deliver concentrated gas oxygen or liquid oxygen. Small a.m.ounts of particulate or hydrocarbon residue (non-volatile residue) in the presence of concentrated oxygen can lead to a catastrophic fire or explosion. This presentation will share details about rinsability, particularly in aqueous cleaning systems. The effect and role of cleaner chemistry, water quality, rinse method, soil loading, temperature and time will be covered.
11:00 a.m.Creating a Global Cleaning Community Through AssociationsMatt Gilmore, Manufacturing Cleaning Association (MCA) Sherry Stepp, KYZEN Corp., MCA President Gerhard Koblenzer, FIT
Join Manufacturing Cleaning Association President Sherry Stepp, Gerhard Koblenzer of FIT and Executive Director Matt Gilmore to learn more about this new industrial cleaning community. The session will provide details on unique member benefits, international partnerships, members-only online communities and show how the association is working to answer the question, “How clean is clean?”

12:30 p.m.The Influence and Future of Industry 4.0 and Digitization in Industrial Parts CleaningSandro Siminovich, Ecoclean Inc.
In today’s world, no one escapes a life where connectivity and data collection are key to success, be it in our personal or professional environments. And, of course, in the helm of parts cleaning applications, it could not be any different. Terms such as “Smart Manufacturing,” “Internet of Things (IoT)” and “Industry 4.0” can be heard constantly in the manufacturing fields. This presentation will cover how these new technologies and approaches could affect industrial parts cleaning equipment and impact plant productivity. Attendees will leave with a thorough understanding of possible solutions, trends, capabilities, advantages and pitfalls of remote connectivity and diagnosis of industrial cleaning systems.
1:00 p.m.High Quality Pre-Tests for Future Critical CleaningGerhard Koblenzer, LPW
The world is changing. New challenges in industry require a look at technical cleanliness in the entire process chain and high-quality tests in advance. Planning a new process must include a clear analytical approach and realistic tests. There is also the benchmark with comparable processes. The presentation will cover a feasibility check regarding the required cleanliness specification, and include such topics as definition of the process and the requested parameters; determination of the suitable detergents and rinsing media; determination of process and time critical sub-processes; balancing between cycle time and process time; and determination of the suitable filtration and media treatment.
1:30 p.m.Reduce the Hidden Costs of Cleaning Process ChangeBarb and Ed Kanegsberg, BFK Solutions LLC
There are costs associated with process change. Most manufacturers consider the cost of cleaning agents and the initial investment in capital equipment. There are other costs — many even more significant costs which may not be apparent. In this program, attendees will learn ways to identify, minimize and sometimes eliminate the hidden costs of cleaning process change. Whether the reason for process change is a reduction of defect rate, increased customer requirements for cleanliness or new safety/environmental regulations, attendees will develop approaches to achieving positive process changes and avoiding costly mistakes. The program is of value to those considering aqueous, solvent, co-solvent or “non-chemical” approaches to cleaning.
2:00 p.m.Refreshment Break
2:30 p.m.Protecting Your Investments with Modular, Scalable Cleaning and Deburring SystemsTyler Wheeler, Ecoclean Inc.
Flexibility and scalability in the manufacturing process have never been as important as they are today. Traditionally, separate systems have been required for deburring and cleaning process with a manual or automatic handling process in between. This traditional approach typically requires not only the purchase of separate machines but also buying more capacity than needed to protect for future volumes. Expand your systems as your production needs increase. The presentation will highlight how a new approach can be used to combine different standardized process modules into a single system that can be configured or expanded to meet your needs for today and tomorrow.
3:00 p.m.Advances in Aqueous Cleaner Process RemediationMike Valenti, Hubbard-Hall Inc.
What if you could reclaim 95% of your production line cleaner? This session covers the fundamentals of industrial aqueous cleaning, the basic components of an industrial aqueous cleaner and the roles of those components. It explains the economics that determine the optimal disposal point of a cleaner bath. It will discuss the production and quality risks associated with the traditional saturate, dump and dispose cleaner practice. Attendees will learn about technologies that extend the life of cleaners, including a cleaner/membrane technology that results in a 95% reclaim efficiency. The how, the cost savings, the quality improvements and the environmental benefits of the technology will be covered.

8:00 a.m.Advances in Automotive Remanufacturing Component CleaningChuck Sexton, KYZEN Corp.
Over the past five years, the remanufacturing industry has grown dramatically, exceeding $8 billion in revenue in 2019! From start to finish, cleaning is paramount to meet performance and reliability in this industry. Safe cleaning chemistries are important to companies as they want to ensure that the cleaning fluids being used are safe not only for the parts being processed but also for the workers and environment. This presentation will provide a current comprehensive look at emerging cleaning agents’ safety and performance; effective carbon removal; market trends for remanufacturing cleaning; state-of-the-art equipment design; and gazing into the crystal ball – what’s in store for remanufacturing cleaning in 2021/2022?
8:30 a.m.Correlating ISO 16232 Particle Analysis Methods (Optical + SEM)Peter Feamster, JOMESA North America
Manufacturers and component suppliers must have the ability to detect all types of contamination particles, no matter the reflection properties, to ensure the highest quality product. The JOMESA PSE (Precision Scan for Elements) system allows for the correlation of optical analysis with EDS material identification. In a mass production environment, the efficiency of the quality testing is essential to catch problems before they grow out of control. Correlating these two analysis methods is necessary to ensure the most damaging contamination particles are detected and removed from upstream processes.
9:00 a.m.Challenges with Technical Cleanliness InspectionMarkus Rossler, Glaeser Inc.
Inspections of functional or safety-critical parts and components are increasingly required. While there are guidelines and specifications available, those specifications cover general methods and cannot go into detail to describe suitable procedures to inspect specific components’ dimensions, design and surface areas. This presentation will offer insight into various challenges and provide ideas such as dealing with extremely large and heavy components, often with a very high contamination level, which is clogging the membranes and does not allow the required particle count under the microscope.

12:30 p.m.There’s a Better Way to PassivateWill Sweet, KYZEN Corp.
To combat corrosion in manufacturing environments, production facilities have been turning to stainless steel passivation. This step of removing the free iron from the surface of the metal has become important in high-reliability markets such as medical, aerospace, automotive and more. Plants that are required to meet specific ASTM or a.m.S standards do not even have the choice of whether to passivate.
1:00 p.m.All Substrates Are Not Created Equal When it Comes to Cleaning CyclesGreg Terrell, Coventya Inc.
Pretreatment cycles in metal finishing vary due to the substrate material being processed. When setting up to clean a part, the soil type must be considered, but the substrate material, the process by which it is formed or made, and any subsequent treatments need to be taken into account as well. Is the part a casting, stamping, alloyed, hardened, machined, impregnated, wrought, cold formed, etc.? This presentation will touch on the part types we commonly see and provide tips for proper cleaning cycles with a focus on the dos and don’ts to be successful.
1:30 p.m.Neutral Surface Treatments and Chemical Polishing: Challenging the NormsRon Cucuro, MacDermid Enthone
Neutral surface treatments were developed primarily to eliminate the hazards associated with the use of traditional strong acid treatments (acid pickles). These neutral surface treatments were intended to be drop-in replacements wherever acid pickles were being used in the plating or conversion coating process and come with the ability to perform the same functions — removal of oxides and heavy scales.
2:00 p.m.Innovative CO2 Cleaning and Extraction Technology Join Today’s ManufacturingNelson Sorbo, Cool Clean Technologies
Since its development in the 1980s, CO2 technology has evolved greatly. This presentation will focus on the solid phase of CO2 for applications of cleaning, surface preparation and various residue removal in typical manufacturing operations. The presentation will also highlight relevant applications that use liquid CO2 phase and supercritical CO2 cleaning for medical implants, medical PPE (specifically N95 masks for cleaning and disinfecting), aerospace outgassing and silicone extraction. It will also cover specific industries and applications where CO2 cleaning and extraction is impacting parts cleaning in immense ways.

The presentation will cover the interaction necessary between an end user and supplier to work toward proper process development, equipment selection and criteria necessary for a successful equipment implementation.
1:00 p.m.Understanding How Heat Improves Your Parts Cleaning ProcessMarty Sawyer, Trimac Industrial Systems
Optimum cleaning typically utilizes heat. Temperature is critical to getting your parts clean but is often not a well understood part of the process. The heat level affects the chemistry selection and can have a huge impact on cleaning performance. Learn about how the heat in both the cleaning and drying application is created, how it is controlled and how to get the best results with the lowest operating costs.
1:30 p.m.The Real Cost of Parts CleaningMike Valenti, Hubbard-Hall Inc.
Soils and contaminates are notoriously difficult to remove from drawn and formed metal parts. If not removed properly, they can cause downstream contamination, rework, downtime and customer rejects. But companies have different attitudes toward cleaning costs, risks and impact.
2:00 p.m.Remove Oils/Soils from Your Wastewater and Recycle What You Can: How to Be Nice to Mother Earth!Ray Graffia Jr., Arbortech Corp.
Machining processes usually require goods to be cleaned. H2O-based decontamination options customarily achieve readiness for shipment, but what do you do with fouled aqua after cleaning? This presentation focuses on two things: defining pollutants typically generated during machining and sharing generic treatment options after those nasty components have literally muddied the waters. Learn about technologies that might enable you to legally discharge or even recycle your aqueous solutions, thereby saving money, labor, energy and—Mother Earth!
4:30-5:30Parts Cleaning Networking Reception! End the day with drinks and conversation with your fellow attendees, speakers and parts cleaning exhibitors from the PMTS show floor.

8:00 a.m.Update from EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy ProgramMargaret Sheppard, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
This presentation will provide an overview of the latest solvents that EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program has reviewed for health and environmental impacts. The presentation will also share information on federal environmental regulations affecting solvents. In addition, attendees will learn about a new law — the a.m.erican Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act — that will affect production of hydrofluorocarbons.
8:30 a.m.Emerging Technologies in Aqueous CleaningChris Berger, Calvary Industries
As industrial cleaning processes evolve, there is a demand for higher performance, lower operational costs and environmental safety. Increasing energy costs drive the need for lower operating temperatures, and regulatory restrictions on some chemistry effluents are making some traditional components obsolete. Ever-increasing competitiveness of the market drive the need for materials that work better and last longer. New technology is now available to meet these needs, but how does it work, and how do you know it works better? This presentation will cover new available technology and new methods that manufacturers can use to validate improvements in their cleaning processes. Several case studies will also be reviewed.
9:00 a.m.Seizing the Benefits of Modified Alcohols in Closed Cleaning Technology Christian Rosener, SAFECHEM Europe GbbH

The theoretical principles will be further illustrated with real customer examples.
9:30 a.m.Refreshment Break
10:00 a.m.TCE / nPB Conversions: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Choosing the Wrong Chemistry or the Wrong ProcessDavid Ferguson, MircoCare LLC
TCE and nPB have been used for many cleaning purposes and in many different types of equipment. Regulatory changes are forcing industries to look for alternatives to these chemistries. MicroCare will answer some of the most common questions and provide scenarios to help attendees better understand what underlying issues need to be considered when making a change to a better, safer cleaning fluid.
10:30 a.m.Eyes on Cleaner Concentration – The Disregarded Component of Cleaning AgentsAndre Lohse, SITA Messtechnik GmbH
The key to useful component cleanliness measurements is to have a well-written and understood cleanliness measurement specification and testing procedure. The testing procedure should incorporate recommendations from ISO standards on component cleanliness measurements. These recommendations include equipment setup and verification, blank tests, contamination extraction procedure validation and analysis of extraction liquid.
