From the Churchwardens

Thank you for all the support and help we received at the Church

Fete and Wine Walk About. The weather was glorious for both

events, it was wonderful to see so many people taking part and

enjoying themselves.

The progress on a new Vicar is slow. The Archdeacon, after the

PCC’s agreement, will be advertising the position part time. So

we will have to wait and see what happens.

If you receive your magazine in time on Sunday 1st August Paul

Needle will be taking both services on a trip home from Spain.

As he has local connections family and friends may like to

support him by coming to one of the services.

August the 15th is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our

Patron Saint. This year we will be able to celebrate the festival

as it falls on a Sunday.

Canon Roger Knight has kindly offered to take confirmation

classes for adults in the autumn if we have enough candidates.

If you wish to be confirmed please speak to Jane who will give

you further details.

Hope you all enjoy the rest of the summer and if you are going

away on a holiday travel safely and have an enjoyable vacation.

The Government has awarded schools a training day in the

Autumn term. Huxlow and the Finedon schools are taking Friday

3rd September as a training day. The children will now return to

school on the 6th September. This is just so much more sensible

than going back on a Friday.

Mothers’Union

A big thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to the success of ourStrawberry Tea.Special thanks must go to our pianist for ‘kickstarting’ the proceedings. All who attended agreed that is was an enjoyable afternoon which realized£117 for Mothers’ Union funds.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Janice Childs who has been awarded the MBE forservices to the elderly.Janice has spent 34 years running a day centre in Irthlingborough forthe elderly. It is great to see someone locally rewarded for their hard work in thecommunity .Well done Janice and thanks for the support you give to the Church.

Summer Fete

What can we say, just thank you to everyone who participated in theChurch Fete. It was a great team effort and a tremendousaccomplishment. All sections of the Church worked together to makethe Fete a success. The Mother’s Union produced mountains of cakesand sandwiches for refreshments in the Mission Room. How nice itwas to see some of the older members of the Mothers’ Union in actiononce again, taking part in a community event. The premiere of Christians puppet show was excellent. The youngerchildren were transfixed and would not move from the front of the littletheatre waiting for the next show.We were very lucky to have the Northampton Boys Brigade Banddemonstrating their marching and playing skills. You were brilliantlads . It must have been exhausting in the heat. The Tug of war was a great attraction once we managed to get theteams out of the Cons.We now realise why the Ringers from Church did not win the contestbecause, as Malcolm Harris said, the Ringers were used to pullingropes up and down not horizontally. Thanks to the Buffs, Ringers andcongratulations to the Dolben team who won. Thank you chaps fortaking part, immense entertainment.Well done to the beautiful dancers from Nicola’s dancing class. Wehad a good selection of dances and children in attractive costumeswith lots of talent which were enjoyed by the many people attendingthe Fete. Thanks to the Stall holders, choir, Thursday Club for their hard workand the team of gentlemen who put up the marquees and tents andcleared away so quickly afterwards. An important thank you to Mick Webb who has offered to put the

Page 7: AUGUST 2010

proceeds from his stall of gorgeous woodwork towards our new Churchflood lights. (The lights really are en route to Finedon)There were so many people present at the Fete all day long which gavean atmosphere of fine community spirit. Thank you to all of you whosupported us. We raised £1,340.00.Unfortunately we were unable to have the pony rides as advertisedbecause the weather was far too hot for the animals and it would havebeen very unkind to have paraded them around in that heat.We were treated to Maypole Dancing by the pupils of our Church school.I think they made a spiders web which they did magnificently without amistake. Well done chi ldren - that is not easy.Thank you Mhairi for opening the Fete as our May Queen 2010.Thank you to anyone we have forgotten. Will we do it again next year – just watch us.

Vanlalsiem

Over the past few years the Church has sponsored the education, through World Vision, of Vanlalsiem, a young boy who lives in NorthTripura in Northern India.Every Christmas and Birthday we send a card and money for a gift fromthe Church. We have just received a progress report from Vanlalsiem, together with a photograph, which you can read on the notice board. Wealso received a picture of a dove that Vanlalsiem had half coloured in.He left the other half for our children to complete. We will send thecompleted coloured in dove with his next birthday card plus a letter anda photograph of some of the children that come to Church and havehelped to colour in the dove.A couple of years ago we sent our harvest money to Vanlalsiem’s village.World Vision bought some goats for Vanlalsiem’s family to help feedthem and to bring in an income. Vanlalsiem’s mother had recently died.In order to reach Vanlalsiem’s village the Aid workers have a few daystrek to reach it.The money we collect in our harvest boxes goes towards other projectswhere World Vision work with children around the world.Thank you for all your support. We will be making some more boxesshortly.

WineWalkabout

The Wine Walkabout was another successful wander around Finedon. We were so lucky with the weather once again.Thank you to the hosts, hostesses and workers who were so generousand produced delicious food and wine from France, Italy, Australia andSouth Africa. This event is not a particularly a money raising event but more a socialgathering. We even picked up a very nice gentleman on the roundswho read in Church last Sunday.I am not too sure what the Chinese policeman thought of the travellerswho informed him they had just come from South Africa, had been toAustralia that evening and were then off to Italy. He suggested they tryChina another time and made a hasty exit from Finedon.Well done everyone and thank you.

the ramblings of Hubert JamesIn my day it was about this time of year that the wedding seasonreached a peak. You might get as many as three or four weddings in aday up the church. Some Saturday nights it looked like there’d been alocalised mini multi-coloured snowstorm as the confetti drifted up bythe gate.It got to the stage where they called for volunteers to sweep it up. Nowluckily, at that time Finedon had three chimney sweeps. The youngest,a lad by the name of Harry Corbett volunteered. He was a lovely ladbut not a great sweep. He preferred singing and dancing and kiteflying. Oh and he had a strange obsession with glove puppets.Anyway, the chimney sweep business was declining and there wasn’tenough chimneys to go round. Harry volunteered to scoop up theconfetti and took to repackaging it then selling it on to the next lot ofwedding guests. Now he was friendly with the Banks’ nanny, MaryBurst and she suggested that he should tell folk it was lucky to buy theconfetti from a sweep. Folks believed him. Soon he was being invitedto weddings and began to appear in the wedding photo’s. He’d do a bitof singing and dancing.

Page 13: AUGUST 2010

He also started solving little problems. Like he might provide sweets forthe little bridesmaids or organise community singing if a bride was late.Or get stuff that had been forgotten.Mind you Mary got all upset when he agreed to do Susan Purcol’swedding. Mary and Susan had been friends but fell out when Susanwent off with Mary’s favourite umbrella. Something and nothing, butthey fell out.Things got worse when on the day of the wedding. Susan forgot herlipstick and asked Harry to borrow her a new one. Mary had a right goat him after. In fact, he ended up writing a song about it.You’ll know it; ‘Sue Purcol cadged a lipstick, her ex-pal found atrocious’.
