In the end, this wondrous WAMC thing will last just as long as we all decide to keep it going. That means all of us. Oh, I know, you think that these are just words and that I don’t really mean it. Nope, this 69 year old means every word. If everyone doesn’t pitch in, we will not make it. Everyone will have to take part of the load. This is no different from what goes on at your workplace or in your family. If anyone shirks or doesn’t do their share, the whole enterprise is in real -- and I mean this – real danger of failing.
The bedrock of our operation is the contributors or members. As soon as someone gives any amount of money, they become a member. When they do that they are supporting the whole thing. If you think about what this little radio station, born in adversity, has been able to do, it is really quite remarkable. When you contemplate our ability to collect the kind of thinking news that you cannot get any other place you realize that is only because enough people think
August Programming NotesKatie BrittonWAMC News/Programming Director
Happy August everyone!
As I write this, I'm listening to a wonderful playlist of some of the new programs we're airing on the station Fridays at 1 PM. It's an eclectic mix of serious and funny shows that will have you laughing, crying, and wanting more.
On air the first Friday of every month at 1:00 PM is The Moth Radio Hour. We'll hear true stories told live on stage without scripts, notes, props, or accompaniment. Each hour mixes humorous and heartbreaking tales told with honesty, bravery and wit.
FDR holding a Fireside Chat, 1933
The second and fourth Fridays of the month will feature an in house production, produced in association with the New York State Archives Partnership and Trust, entitled The Power of Words. In this year-long series of programs, we follow American history through some of the most memorable political speeches of our time. We get a chance to hear original speeches from the likes

it’s worth it. The day that people turn their backs, it just won’t be there. The Limbaughs, the Murdochs, the O’Reillys and the Becks will own it all.
Many of you have traveled around the United States. You hear other stations. They play canned news from NPR and they may have a morning or afternoon voice. What you will not hear is the top news from all over the region. You won’t hear reporters who have to be paid -- certainly not what they are worth -- checking in from the far reaches of the listening area. You should read the thank you notes we receive from people who appreciate the tough stories that sometimes involve the legislature cutting the budgets of poor people and what that means to the fabric of society.
Think also of what Joe Donahue and the Roundtable mean to all of those organizations and people who would never be featured if it weren’t for the show. Think of all the people who have been able to get the word out about what their voluntary groups have been able to do. Many of them tell us this is the only place their work gets publicity.
When you go to your food coop you are often asked to "do hours." I have often thought that if we could only do the same thing at WAMC, I would not be awake at night worrying about how we can make our budget. Almost everyone at WAMC is doing three different jobs. Look, for example, at webmaster Ray Graf who is also a morning voice and who is our jazz guy when he is needed or at Bob Barrettwho is our weekend voice, reads underwriting announcements (no easy job) and produces The Health Showand you understand what this is all about.
So, and this is a big "so," I have to ask you to do more than one job yourself. You have always been there during fund drives and it goes without saying that when you are not, we are finished. But can you, will you, volunteer to speak to one other person about supporting WAMC? It’s really pretty easy. The next time someone references what they have heard on the station, you can somehow find the voice and the guts to gently and affirmatively ask them whether they are members and then, tactfully and supportively, ask them to do something. If every member did that, we’d make it. Every time I see an electricity bill and the increases that we have to pay to stay on the air, my stomach sinks.
Of course, we could ask our members to come up with a million dollars for a fund drive but that would be so hard, we’d just end up dead. There has to be a better way and that way is for each of us to do one extra thing; get one extra member or tell someone that underwriting on WAMC pays dividends (it does).
I will not be able to do this forever. I just want to know that when it is time for me to go, we have made this a place where we can all depend on each other. I can’t wait to see if I can depend on you to make that happen. - A.C.

Pinecone Open Dayby Katie Horn, WAMC Fund Drive Coordinator
“In the fractal world, dimensions are tangled up like a ball of twine, and objects are neither two dimensions nor three but somewhere in between…Fractals harmonize complexity and simplicity.” - Iona Miller
Each summer, my family and I would pile into the family Plymouth - a chord of children packed in tight with canned goods and fitted sheets – and drive the four hours north to a small camp in upstate NY. This departure from our suburban Long Island town wrangled us together in a way that nothing else did. While fighting over the last pretzel rod or bit of leg room we talked and laughed and never got quiet – except when the radio was on.
When I think of the warmth and closeness of family, the memories that I tune into include those trips and the quiet of the late night drives as we listened to The Shadow. Making our way to the lake, to the greener side, we sat together and listened.
Seven years ago, I moved up to Schoharie County in an effort to make the greener side of things less of a summertime destination and more of a constant backdrop to my daily life. The first summer trip to the camp from Cobleskill, my daughter and I turned on the radio and heard Garrison Keillor’s familiar, national voice read a poem that mentioned something about “rising up completely” and “laughing about surviving.” That is how we found WAMC. Hearing those words was the first thread of community I felt here. We listened to Prairie Home Companion together on the way home. I felt the circular joy of familiar rhythm and tradition as we listened together.
Closer to home, I heard Joe Donahue’s stories and realized that I had driven on the very same roads, had screeched to a halt because of the very same goats. This was quite a kick for someone like me. Always looking to feel a part of things. The more I listen, the more the threads emerge that join me to this community. An image of colorful fabric comes to mind that is of course of all of you. When did you start listening?

Wednesdays at 8pm on WAMC
8/04 - CRUMBS Nite Out featring Mirk and the New Familiars -Recorded live at the Linda, 7/22/10. They got a new fresh sound, with a certain sense of familiarity... Like when you pop in the CD no matter where you are you're home, you know?
Professor Louie and the Crowmatix – Recorded at the Linda 2/13/10. The group came into existence preparing songs for Aaron Professor LouieHurwitz' studio productions for the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame group The Band. They are also the backing group for solo CD's by Rick Danko and Garth Hudson.
8/11 - Dancing on the Air - Recorded Live in Ashokan.
8/18 – Willie Nile - Recorded live at The Linda,.1/23/10. More than a quarter century has passed since the release of Willie Nile’s first album, accompanied by press notices comparing him to Dylan and Springsteen. Writing in The New York Times, the great rock critic Robert Palmer called him “one of the most gifted singer-songwriters to emerge from the New York scene in years.”
8/25 - The Wiyos - Recorded live at The Linda,.1/16/10.Many musicians throughout history have made their coin leading the life of wandering troubadours, and The Wiyos have definitively embraced and embodied this tradition. The Wiyos recently released their fourth recordBroken Land Bell.

WAMC Radio Series Highlights Program that Makes Space Camp Accessible to Students Who Are Blind
Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students (SCI-VIS) is a weeklong camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL, that helps middle and high school students who are blind or who have low vision to learn about space and space-related technology. The students experience simulated space missions using equipment that is adapted with Braille and large print, and computer programs that convert text to speech.
SCI-VIS is featured in the latest two stories in WAMC’s series, Access to Advancement: An Audio Exploration of the National Effort to Increase the Role of Women with Disabilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Access to Advancement is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Research in Disabilities Education program to shed light on the opportunities for, and achievements of, women with disabilities in science fields. The series airs on The Best of Our Knowledge and 51%, and it is available via Flash Audio and transcript at www.womeninscience.org.
Anneliese DeVyldere attended SCI-VIS three times during high school and says the experience was transformative. “My world exploded, turned inside out, and grew exponentially. It was fabulous.” Anneliese’s interest in space began at age five, when her father stood with her in the yard to watch meteor showers. “Because I was legally blind, I was never able to see what he was talking about…I want to know what’s up there for myself. And so that was kind of the start.” Anneliese is now an honors student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, a school known for its engineering and science programs and located next to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. She heard about the University while attending SCI-VIS. Once she started learning about aerospace engineering at SCI-VIS, she knew she had to attend UAH, where she is now studying to become a technical writer, with the goal of writing about spacecraft design for NASA.
“Just because I can’t see the stars, doesn’t mean I can’t reach for them,” states the motto on the SCI-VIS website. It’s a message that eleven-year-old camper Deanna Greco wholeheartedly believes. “I would like to be the first visually-impaired woman to go on the moon,” says Deanna. Deanna’s mother, Phyllis Greco, encourages her daughter to pursue this goal. “I just support Deanna in anything that she wants to do. Having the vision problem, I want to make sure that she’s clear that that shouldn’t stop her in anything that she wants to do.” And Phyllis says that the SCI-VIS program has given Deanna the independence necessary to make her dreams a reality.
To learn more about the SCI-VIS program, visit www.womeninscience.org/series.php?seriesID=1. You can join the Access to Advancement discussion on Facebook by going to www.facebook.com and searching for “Women in Science ON THE AIR!” Or follow the series on Twitter at www.twitter.com/AccesstoAdvance.
Access to Advancement is made possible by support from the National Science Foundation Research in Disabilities Education program under grant number HRD-0833247.

BUCKY AND JOHN PIZZARELLI TO PERFORM BENEFIT CONCERT FOR WAMC by Jennifer Wilson, WAMC Fund Drive Coordinator
In what would be the final hours of WAMC’s June 2010 Fund Drive, John Pizzarelli called in to the WAMC studios to announce that he and his legendary father Bucky Pizzarelli, will perform a benefit concert for WAMC Sunday, September 19 at 6pm. The announcement brought on a flurry of phone calls pledging for this special event and greatly helped us end an incredible $800,000 Fund Drive.
John Pizzarelli
When asked how he felt about Pizzarelli’s spontaneous phone call, Alan Chartock replied, “We are so grateful to John, whose generosity has helped us many times over the years. His call during the fund drive helped us get to the end as our members love him. I can’t wait for September to hear and see them both play The Linda again.”
2010 has proved to be a musically blessed year for WAMC – in March Natalie Merchant performed a sold-out and incredible benefit concert at The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, and now the Pizzarelli father-son duo will be live at WAMC’s very own Linda Norris auditorium. Lauded and praised numerous times for it’s superb acoustics, this September 19th performance is sure to be another amazing event of great jazz.
There are still some tickets left for this sure to be sold-out concert for $100 per seat. This performance is general admission at The Linda Norris Auditorium located at 339 Central Avenue,
Albany, NY 12206. If you would like to reserve your tickets today please call us at 800.323.9262 x171 or x189.
Bucky Pizzarelli
WAMC is so fortunate to have great artists and musicians to celebrate this great station, and to celebrate with our wonderful members without whom this station would not be possible. We hope you can join us for this special evening.
If you hear something, give something.
Bucky P, Alan Chartock, John P and Jessica Molaskey
Each week on his Radio Deluxe program, broadcast on WAMC’s network of over 23 stations, John Pizzarelli takes listeners on a 2-hour tour through the great American songbook. The program focuses on American standards recorded by a growing number of new performers – like Diana Krall, Peter Cincotti, Michael Buble and Norah Jones, along with the “greats” who have influenced them. You can hear Radio Deluxe on WAMC Saturdays from 2-4 p.m. and Tuesdays from 8-10 p.m.
