One of the best things on WAMC is the first hour of The Roundtable, every weekday morning between nine and ten.

The whole idea of that first hour panel discussion is to create a transition from the hard news of the combined WAMC-NPR Morning Edition to the softer, stimulating Roundtable material, a combination of author interviews, arts discussions, and material concerning events around the region. The cast is almost always the same. Joe Donahue hosts and when he can’t do it, Ray Graf takes over. The two men have different styles but they are both tops in their field.

Our two regulars, Libby Post and Rosemary Armao are both incredibly bright and well spoken. I do my bit and one or two days a week, the always brilliant and articulate Mike Spain, the associate editor of the Times Union, sits in one of the chairs and proves over and over again how bright and decent he is. New Recipes for Flagship Shows

Well, folks, the frost has covered our windshields, the jack-o-lanterns are in the compost, and the great testing of recipes for Thanksgiving is underway. (This year I think I’m going to try adding some oyster mushrooms to my stuffing. And is it too decadent or heart attack inducing if I try to wrap the turkey in bacon? Thoughts?) Anyway, while we’ll be in the kitchen creating our dishes, the folks at NPR have done some testing of their own and this month we’ll sample their latest menu, as it were. Let me explain.

The mother ship in Washington (NPR) has decided that Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Weekend Edition needed some schedule shake-ups to both enhance the listening experience and accommodate our changing attention spans. So, starting November 17th the segments you’re used to hearing at certain times of your drive will be moved from anywhere between a minute or two, to ten to fifteen minutes. The crew at WAMC got together and labored over NPR’s new clocks so we could make sure you still get the local news and segments you love listening to.

Here’s when your favorite local segments will be heard:

Monday – Friday Morning Edition:

and knows a great deal because of all his years on the paper.

The whole idea is that we talk about everything that is in the news. If it’s complicated, we try to make sense out of it.

Let’s try Ebola. Everyone is confused. Some people think the media is overplaying the disease that has scared the world. Many feel that Ebola will never reach the United States and or become a real health problem. We have explored this up and down, in and out. We consult the journals, the best newspapers in the country. We quote the CDC and the top doctors and bio-ethics people. There is nothing about this topic that hasn’t been said on the Roundtable. But, of course, we don’t stop with our differing opinions. We ask that folks write in with their views and as much as possible, we try to include their comments on the program. We cherish the opportunity to hear from you.

Of course, there will always be folks who don’t like or respect what you have to say. They may call you names and assume that there is a single answer to any problem or that only someone with the letters MD after their name is entitled to have an opinion. Those people are few and far between. During the last fund drive we heard again and again how many of you love the give and take and the warm and obviously loving banter among the panelists. To put it mildly, the program has been a hit and we thank all of you who listen and those who participate.

Some people will believe that any argument is too much but most of us understand that the more perspectives we offer up, the more likely it is that people can form their own, educated opinions. Unfortunately if you get a thousand “’atta boys” and one really angry letter from someone who really doesn’t get it, you feel bad that you can’t please everyone. That’s human nature.

We are thrilled by the show’s success and we love all of you who have told us how much you like it and have backed that up with your WAMC memberships. You couldn’t possibly have a million dollar fund drive in record time if people didn’t feel that way. So, to all of you who are in this thing of ours, this WAMC thing, I thank you and I can’t tell you how I appreciate what YOU have done. I look forward to seeing you on the radio. - Alan

Monday – Friday All Things Considered:4:04PM - Earth Wise5:48PM - WAMC Business Report

The stories and segments that NPR usually airs like Your Health, StoryCorps and Frank DeFord will be moved around a bit as well and the length of the stories and newscasts will be changed. Some of the blocks will give WAMC more local news time, while others will only have headlines and underwriting credits.

One change that will occur outside of Morning Edition and All Things Considered, is the bottom of the hour news during The Roundtable. Due to the changes, it will no longer originate from NPR, but from the BBC via American Public Media. Just think, you get a double whammy of BBC; they will be at the :01 and :30 during each hour.

We understand that the new clocks may take some getting used to, as many of us time our drives in the morning and afternoon by what’s on the radio. Please know that the changes are nationwide and all NPR member stations will be following the same format. We’ll get through this together, and before long, it will seem like the schedule has been like this forever.

So, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Special programming will be provided, so stay tuned for some great music to cook and travel by and of course on Black Friday we’ll giving you some great shows to listen to on the app as you wait in ridiculously long lines to get that $100 flat screen. - Katie

Ride Out the TurbulenceKelly Bogdanov – San Francisco

Provided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley

Financial and commodity markets were upended recently by risks related to Europe and the strong dollar. While these risks could linger, we would stay the course by maintaining a full allocation to equities. We would add stocks should weakness persist.

Fingers Pointing at Germany A fresh batch of negative German economic data and months of persistently low eurozone inflation have increased recession and deflation risks for the eurozone region.

Previously, Germany’s economy helped prop up core eurozone nations. But this go-around, it could tug them lower.

RBC Capital Markets European economists maintain their Q3 Germany GDP growth forecast of 0.4% q/q, but note there is downside risk to the estimate.

Our TakeWhat if Germany and/or the eurozone slip back into recession? We believe it would be another mild one. Importantly, we doubt it would materially impact North America and Asia. While it could certainly constrain U.S. and Chinese GDP growth, as well as U.S. multinationals’ profits, the U.S. would likely deliver enough growth to help keep the rest of the world afloat.

ECB and Germany Still at Odds The tug of war about European monetary and fiscal policies has resumed with European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi on one side and German officials (Schaeuble and Weidmann) on the other.

As these factions continue to squabble, investors once again doubt their leadership. The perception is neither side is doing enough to arrest the European malaise.

Our TakeThe situation is not as dire as current sentiment, in our view, because meaningful ECB stimulus is in the pipeline. But more monetary and fiscal policies are needed and will likely take time to implement. And if deflation does indeed become an acute threat, these factions would be forced to unite.

Fed Angst About the DollarThe Fed revealed in its September meeting minutes that some members are concerned the strong dollar could have negative knock-on effects. It may dampen U.S. exports, constrain domestic growth, and keep U.S. inflation too low.

Markets interpreted these comments as “dovish.” The strong dollar might incentivize the Fed to stay loose, possibly beyond mid-2015. So the thinking goes, if the greenback is too strong, it could represent de-facto U.S. tightening.

Our Take: Fed rate-hike speculation will likely rise to a fever pitch in coming months. The best approach for individual investors is to block out the noise and focus on the likelihood rates will probably increase in 2015, depending on the data and other factors, such as the dollar and global economy. Influential Fed members (Dudley and Fischer) said during the week that mid-2015 still seems like a reasonable time frame.

Maintain Equity AllocationsNone of these risks will be resolved overnight, but we don’t believe they warrant changing equity allocations in portfolios. We would maintain a benchmark allocation and would prepare to use any additional weakness as a buying opportunity.
