Celebrate Summer by Shopping Sidney! It doesn’t take long when visiting, or being a new resident

The Sidney Sister Cities Association (SSCA), an affiliate of the Town of Sidney, has been making its contribution to that buzz in several positive ways. Buoyed by the enthusiastic reception of their “Sidney-by-the-Sea” 2012 Calendar last fall, the SSCA volunteers plunged into creating the next edition. Now, the much-anticipated 2013 Town 

of  Sidney Calendar is, as they say, hot off the press!

Funds raised by calendar sales assist the group’s cultural and educational exchanges with their three Sister Cities: Niimi, in Okayama, Japan; Cairns, in Queensland, Australia, and our almost-next-door neighbour (neighbor!) Anacortes, in the  State of Washington.

This fall, for example, a group of young students from Niimi will come here to visit Parkland

Another example: a unique initiative of the Cairns Sister Cities Committee invites Sidney area artists to submit applications to participate in a multi-arts residency program in Cairns. This presents an exciting opportunity for writers, musicians, dancers, theatre and production people. For specific details about the multi-arts residency program, email SSCA Cairns committee chair Lesley Nicholls: lanich21@telus.net.

The development of the calendar depended greatly on contributions by local camera buffs. Sidney’s Shutterbugs photography club was prominent among those, and the SSCA’s calendar committee, using a “blind selection” process, chose 45 photos for inclusion in the calendar from the 192 entries received.

“This year, we are working in cooperation with Cliff McNeil-Smith of Tanner’s Books,” said SSCA president Bob McLure.

“This is a genuine cooperative effort between the Town of Sidney, the Sidney Sister Cities volunteer members and the contributing photographers, right to the print production stages,” said Bob McLure.

Where fashion meets comfort

How often do we actually realize how fortunate we are that we have such a capable library system in our area, where one can visit and read or borrow books, DVD’s and CD’s that would otherwise cost us significantly? This convenience has not always been the case in Sidney. The first indication of a public library located in Sidney was in August 1913, when a small shipment of books from Victoria was received by the local bookstore run by Nelson Fralick via the Travelling Library. These were made available to the public to borrow at “a very little cost.” 

Two months later, the members of the Young Ladies’ Basketball Club opened a public reading room, renting the premises of Captain Sears (formerly of the S.S. Iroquois) on Second Street, just south of Beacon Avenue, where locals could spend a few hours reading newspapers, magazines and other literature at no cost. In February 1914, they took over the consignments of books from the Travelling Library, making them available at no cost to the borrowers. With the depressed times and war effort, the Reading Room and Library was closed the following January. 

The next move towards creating a public library occurred in October 1919, when it was proposed to start a branch division of the Victoria Public Library. By the end of April 1920, the library opened in a room at Hearn’s Sidney Leather Store on the northwest corner of Beacon and Fourth (see photo above), Mrs. Evelyn Hearn acting as the librarian. Even though the library was well attended, it was often financially wanting, and eventually closed its doors in 1928. In January 1930, John E. NcNeil of the Sidney Pharmacy announced that the Marionette Circulating Library would provide books to subscribers in his place of business. This failing in November, Sidney again had no lending library.

During this time, the provincial government made books available to the public through the Open Shelf Department 

mail library. With this system, the government paid the outgoing postage, and the borrower paid the return postage. For the next 30 years, this system served the district. 

During the early 1960s, community members explored the idea of a municipally-funded library service. In 1965, North Saanich and Sidney voted in a referendum to join the Vancouver Island Regional Library. The first Sidney/

North Saanich Library opened in April 1966 in the Gordon Hulme block on Beacon Avenue, where the Children’s Bookshop is currently located. Meanwhile, a new library building was being planned as an addition to Sanscha Hall (now the Mary Winspear Centre), and this Centennial project opened in 1967. 

By the late 1970s, the popular library (aka the Library Annex) outgrew its 2,344-square-foot space. Nell Horth, current 

Sidney Mayor Larry Cross, and others successfully lobbied the two municipal councils to support a new location. Sidney provided the land on Resthaven Drive, and North Saanich, Sidney, and the provincial government funded the 6,500-square-foot building. 

The library on Resthaven opened on September 18th, 1982 and remains a place for inspiration, learning and play. Designed by architects Marshall Goldsworthy and Associates, the building delights with its West Coast style, whimsical bubble windows in the children’s section, and corner nooks which look out onto exquisite gardens maintained by Sidney’s Parks staff. Our library is a testament to all of the people in the past 100 years who sought a public library for North Saanich and Sidney.
