NC)—Often the fi rst thing we do when we decide to become more fi t is to set a goal – and frequently that’s a weight loss objective, like wanting to lose fi ve pounds next month.

But Dr. Shannon Bredin, a behavior specialist and as-sistant professor in the Uni-versity of British Columbia’s School of Kinesiology, says using the scale to measure progress of a fi tness regime can be a mistake.

Instead, here are 5 “SMART” steps to setting yourself up for success:

Specifi c: What are you going to do? Why is this im-portant to you? How are you going to do it?

Measurable: Tracking your activity and progress can be key to motivation. But instead of simply step-ping on the scale, Dr. Bredin advises that you get more accurate information from your level of physical activity, like the number of steps tak-en in a day. There are plenty of products that can help you measure and track your activity. For example, one called Tractivity is an afford-able solution that includes a digital sensor that clips to your shoe. It calculates your steps, distance travelled, time active and calories burned. Your progress is il-lustrated on your personal secure account. Take a look at www.tractivityonline.com to see how it works.

Attainable: “You don’t want your goals to be too easy so that there’s no sat-isfaction in fulfi lling them,” says Dr. Bredin. “But you also can’t make them so dif-fi cult that they frustrate you. The secret to setting goals is to strike a balance between achievability and creating a real challenge for yourself.”

Realistic: For example, if your goal is 10,000 steps per day, check with your doctor that you’re currently healthy enough to strive for that goal, and identify times in your day that can be dedi-cated to walk breaks.

Timely: Set a target date to reach your daily goal. If you don’t commit to a time-frame, there’s no urgency and you may be prone to procrastinate.

Today’s kids are busier than ever before. While it can be fun and benefi cial for kids to participate in extra-curricular activities, fi nding the right fi t isn’t as easy as it sounds.

When helping kids fi nd an extracurricular activityx, it’s best to consider a host of factors. Especially keep in mind that not all kids are the same with respect to inter-ests. And what was enjoyed by their parents won’t nec-essarily be enjoyed by them.

Getting StartedThe best place to start

is to speak to kids about their interests. Just because Dad loved playing football doesn’t mean Junior is des-tined to be a gridiron great. Kids have their own inter-ests, and those interests can be cultivated with the right extracurricular activity. For example, a creative child might enjoy an after-school art class a couple of times per week.

Parents should also con-sider extracurriculars that can help kids grow as peo-ple. For instance, a child who’s shy in public but loves hamming it up at home might embrace an after-school the-ater program.

Get the 411Parents should inquire

about program costs. Though many programs are upfront about fees, some have hidden fees that can add up. Such fees can be for uniforms, equipment, class trips, etc.

Extra fees don’t have to exclude a program from consideration, but it’s better to know about them in ad-vance than have them come as a surprise.

Consider a Child’s Grade Level

A child’s age and grade level should also be consid-ered when choosing an ex-tracurricular activity. Consult teachers about fi nding an age-appropriate extracur-ricular activity.

For example, less compet-itive activities that emphasize fun might be more appropri-ate for kids in kindergarten and the fi rst grade.

For second graders, ac-tivities not offered at school, like learning to play an in-strument, can help cultivate a child’s interest in a non-competitive environment. As kids reach third grade and beyond, consider more

rules-based activities, in-cluding team sports, as kids at that age are more capable of understanding rules and handling losing than young-er kids.

As children get older and move on to middle school, look for activities that rein-

force learning and help de-velop a young person’s char-acter, including their ability to interact with others.

When looking for an ex-tracurricular activity for kids, parents should consider a host of factors, including the child’s interests and age.
