Welcome:

Presider: Let us worship God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Presider: Almighty God,

People: to you all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from you no secrets are hidden.

Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Glory to God: To God Be the Glory #371, vs.1

Tune: (Idem)

To God be the glory, who great things has done!

God so loved the world freely sending the Son,

Who yielded his life an atonement for sin,

And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the earth hear God’s voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,

And give God the glory, who great things has done!

~Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915)

Prayer of the Day: Presider: Let us pray.

Silence is kept

Almighty God,

we are taught by your word

that all our doings without love are worth nothing.

Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts

that most excellent gift of love,

the true bond of peace and of all virtue;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD OF GOD We read and respond to God’s message in

Scripture

First Reading: Romans 12

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of

God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and

acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be

conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of

your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--

what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to

me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more

highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment,

each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For

as in one body we have many members, and not all the members

have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in

Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have

gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in

proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in

teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the

leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Let love

be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; Love one

another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing

honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.

Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to

strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse

them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but

associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do

not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble

in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live

peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave

room for the wrath of God; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I

will repay, says the Lord.” No, "if your enemies are hungry, feed

them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by

doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be

overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Reader: The word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 124

If the Lord had not been on our side, let Israel now say;

Page 5: August 23, 2020 10am Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost · August 23, 2020 10am Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost Loving God. Loving People. Growing in Christ Together. Presiding: The Reverend

If the Lord had not been on our side, when enemies rose up

against us;

Then would they have swallowed us up alive in their fierce anger

toward us;

Then would the waters have overwhelmed us and the torrent

gone over us;

Then would the raging waters have gone right over us.

Blessed be the Lord! He has not given us over to be a prey for

their teeth.

We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler; the snare

is broken, and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and

earth.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Hymn 271: You Are the Christ, O Lord

Tune: Darwall (#323)

You are the Christ, O Lord,

The Son of God most high!

For ever be adored that Name

In earth and sky,

In which, though mortal strength may fail,

The saints of God at last prevail!

Oh! Peter was most blest

With blessedness unpriced,

Who, taught of God, confessed

The Godhead in the Christ!

For of your Church, Lord, you made known

This saint a true foundation-stone.

You are the Christ, O Lord,

The Son of God most high!

For ever be adored that Name

In earth and sky,

In which, though mortal strength may fail,

The saints of God at last prevail!

~The Right Reverend Dr. William Walsham How (1823-1897)

The Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20

Gospeller: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,

according to Matthew.

People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Gospeller: Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea

Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son

of Man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, but others

Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to

them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered,

"You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." And Jesus

answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh

and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my

church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will

give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you

bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on

earth will be loosed in heaven." Then he sternly ordered the

disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Sermon: The Rt. Reverend Stephen Andrews

The Apostles’ Creed:

Presider: I invite those who would like to make a profession of

Christian faith to join with me in the Apostles’ Creed.

People: I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again

to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Presider: Having reaffirmed our faith, let us prepare to offer our

prayers to God.

Prayers of the People: For the Church, those in authority, the world, our community,

the sick and those in need, for the departed,

and for the forgiveness of our sins.

Confession and Absolution:

Presider: While we were still sinners,

Christ died for us.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit,

God promises to heal and forgive us.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God.

cf Romans 5:8

Presider: God our Father,

People: long-suffering, full of grace and truth,

you create us from nothing and give us life.

You give your faithful people new life

in the water of baptism.

You do not turn your face from us,

nor cast us aside.

We confess that we have sinned

against you and our neighbour.

We have wounded your love

and marred your image in us.

Restore us for the sake of your Son,

and bring us to heavenly joy,

in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Presider: Almighty God have mercy upon you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and keep you in eternal life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People: Amen.

The Peace: Having prayed for God’s grace and peace for us and the world,

we offer an exchange of peace with one another.

As you are comfortable, you may use the live chat to say, “Peace be with you”

to those participating online.

Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

Hymn 300: Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation

Tune: Westminster Abbey

Christ is made the sure foundation,

Christ the head and cornerstone,

Chosen of the Lord and precious,

Binding all the church in one;

Holy Zion's help forever,

And her confidence alone.

All that dedicated city,

Dearly loved of God on high,

In exultant jubilation

Pours perpetual melody;

God the One in Three adoring

In glad hymns eternally.

Here vouchsafe to all thy servants

What they ask of thee to gain,

What they gain from thee forever

With the blessed to retain,

And hereafter in thy glory

Evermore with thee to reign.

Laud and honour to the Father,

Laud and honour to the Son,

Laud and honour to the Spirit,

Ever Three and ever One,

One in might, and One in glory,

While unending ages run.

~Latin (Angularis Fundamentum, 7th cent.);

tr. The Reverend Dr. John Mason Neale (1818-1866)

The Lord’s Prayer: Mass for the King of Glory
