Gloria
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

CONSUBSTANTIAL WITH THE FATHER;
THROUGH HIM ALL THINGS WERE MADE.
FOR US MEN AND FOR OUR SALVATION
HE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN,
AT THE WORDS THAT FOLLOW, UP TO AND INCLUDING AND BE
CAME MAN, ALL BOW.
AND BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, WAS INCARNATE OF THE
VIRGIN MARY, AND BECAME MAN.
FOR OUR SAKE HE WAS CRUCIFIED UNDER PONTIUS
PILATE, HE SUFFERED DEATH AND WAS BURIED,
AND ROSE AGAIN ON THE THIRD DAY
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SCRIPTURES.
HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN
AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER.
HE WILL COME AGAIN IN GLORY
TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD
AND HIS KINGDOM WILL HAVE NO END.
I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE LORD, THE GIVER
OF LIFE,
WHO PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON,
WHO WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON IS ADORED
AND GLORIFIED,
WHO HAS SPOKEN THROUGH THE PROPHETS.
I BELIEVE IN ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, AND APOSTOLIC
CHURCH.
I CONFESS ONE BAPTISM FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF
SINS
AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE RESURRECTION OF
THE DEAD
AND THE LIFE OF THE WORLD TO COME. AMEN.

Salt for the Week
“You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” (Mt 16.18)
So what was the “rock”? Scripture scholars give two possibilities
when we think about the rock that the Church would be built upon…
Possibility 1: The rock was Peter. Peter, a fallible man who denied Jesus no less than three times! Yes, he (and his successors) would be the foundation of the church. He was a hard-working, what-you- see-is-what-you-get kind of a guy, who wasn’t shy about spilling his doubts. Only last week we heard Peter say: “Lord if it is really you, tell me to come to you across the water.” This example of “rock” gives us pause as we look to our attitudes and beliefs about the successor of Peter today—the Pope. Yet we are reminded “…and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” That gives us peace.
Possibility 2: The rock was Peter’s profession of faith; “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Here is the summary of Peter’s understanding of the man he had followed and travelled with and watched during his public ministry. He was “the Christ”—who would be the messiah, the savior. He was intimately connected (Son!) with the living God. This Jesus confirmed by telling him that his understanding itself was a revelation of God, not simply Peter “figuring it out.” And we are reminded “…and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” Again, we have peace knowing that believing Jesus is the Christ and Son of God is faith we can stand on and count on for protection.
So much for Peter. How about you? Who do YOU say that I am? Upon what rock do you stand?
Grateful for Peter—

Stewardship—In today’s reading, St. Paul reminds the Romans—and us—that all things come from God: “For from Him and through Him and for Him all things are.” Good stewards understand that all is gift and share generously the gifts of time, talent, and treasure with which they’ve been blessed.

Guys Bible Study—We are grateful to Father Lou Jaeger for leading our first Guys Bible Study this summer. Two guys from St. Patrick, three from St. Mary, one from St. Joseph, three from St. Mark, and one from St. Peter and Paul at Petersburg met virtually to learn about the Acts of the Apostles. It was a great opportunity and was much appreciated. Thanks, Father!

Egg Casserole Breakfast Report—On Sunday, August 9, the Egg Casserole Breakfast was held at Sacred Heart. People ordered ahead of time and over 100 casseroles were served that day with additional ones being distributed to some shut-ins in the area. A total of $3,129 was raised and after all expenses were deducted, the net profit was $2,673. The Parish Life Committee would like to thank everyone who assisted with making and serving the breakfast, the people who donated food and supplies and all those who gave generous cash donations for the breakfast.
This money will be used to pay part of the remaining charges for the new heating and air conditioning system installed in the church in July. The total charges of $12,683 for the heating and air conditioning were paid by the Parish’s general fund. In June we reimbursed the general fund for $6,500; in July we paid the balance of $6,183. After deducting the profit of $2,673 from the balance, we still owe $3,510 as expense for this year. If anyone would like to help with this expenditure, please send in your donation and mark your check for heating and a/c and we will make sure it goes to the right account.
Elkader Community Virtual Vacation Bible School would like to thank all who participated. We had virtual scriptures, readings, crafts and even music! Special appearances of our puppet friends— Duffley, Moppet, and Junior—were a huge hit! Thank you again!
