The Midrash Shocher Tov explains why this chapter is specifically selected. The Midrash comments that King David, the author of this Psalm, chose to include the word “ori” (light) to subtly reference the unique holy light of Rosh HaShanah. Additionally, the word “yishi” meaning salvation is a reference to the repentance and salvation achieved on Yom Kippur. Finally, the word “suko” meaning G-d's Sukkah is a reference to the holiday of Sukkot. Yet another reason that this chapter was selected is because G-d's name appears 13 times in the chapter corresponding to Hashem's 13 attributes of kindness. Chapter 27 is so meaningful that Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai (commonly known as the Chida) one of the great Sephardic Rabbis of the 18th century, comments that it is praiseworthy to recite this chapter of Tehilim every day of the year. Interestingly, the Gra is quoted in Ma'aseh HaRav of having the practice not to recite this additional perek of Tehilim because such a custom is not mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch or in the Kabbalistic writings of the Arizal. There are numerous Chassidic sects which report that their Chassidic masters did not recite this chapter either. Nonetheless, the Mishnah Berurah records that the accepted minhag is to recite L'Dovid Hashem after both Shacharit and Maariv up to and including Shemini Atzeret. THIS WEEK!
