RESPECT LIFE “[K]eeping the spirit of the Gospel means that Catholic institutions are to bear witness in love to the full truth about the human person by providing social, charitable, and educational services in a manner that fully reflects the God-given dignity of the human person.” — Archbishop William E. Lori, Chairman,

Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, on the “Freedom to Bear Witness” (www.bit.ly/Freedom2Witness) Tradition teaches us Christ was conceived on the Feast of the Annunciation. We will watch the parallel development of “Joseph” in the womb beginning on March 25 (Feast of the Annunciation) until December 25. The Office of Human Life and Dignity is making available a series of bulletin messages describing the fetal development of “Joseph.” Each week we will send out the messages to the parishes. Please consider inserting these messages in the bulletin for the upcoming weeks and each week through December 25.

Fetal Development of "Joseph” August 30 (week 24) I have fine hair all over my body that is there to protect my skin. Joseph will lose all this body hair before birth. I’m a little thin at this point, but am putting on more baby fat. My eyes are formed, but the iris does not have color – I’d like brown eyes! Joseph now weighs over a pound and is about a foot long. 50 years ago, if the baby was born at this age, the child could not have survived. But today, with modern technology, babies born at this age have a fighting chance (about 50%) of survival. “Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not

be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:7) - The Knights of Columbus food pantry collection is asking for these specific item: Cereals, Pancake Mix, Syrup, Jelly, Canned Tuna, Ham and Chicken, Beef Stew, Rice, Dried Beans, Mac and Cheese, Chunky Soups. Tooth Brush, Tooth Paste and Shampoo. As always we appreciate any donations. Please bring them to the Mass Saturday and Sunday. Any question call Ed Schulz 285-0711

Parish Council Purpose: The Pastoral Advisory Council is a small group of parishioners who advise and give counsel to the pastor in matters of importance to the parish. A Pastor establishes a council to expand and enhance the decision-making process. Members The current members of Transfiguration Parish Council are: Fr. Roch; Deacon Mike; Huck Booz, Chairman; Fran Braks, Secretary - Faith Formation; Rosanna Hirshkind - Liturgy; Mark Hopkins - Finance Chair; Luis Galan - Hispanic Community; Gary Deininger; Geri Cullen; Bill Haran; Maureen McCarthy; Patti George. Meetings Meetings are held in the parish hall on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm, except for July and August. Minutes of the meetings are recorded and available upon request. The meeting schedule for 2015 is as follows: September 10; October 8; November 12; December 10

From the Desk of the Historian: This is the tenth in a series of articles on special gifts to the church. More information about these and other significant gifts to our church is located

in the Priests, Deacons, Religious, Altar Servers, and Beautiful Gifts album in the Historian’s bookcase in the parish hall. The beautiful, colorfully embroidered altar cloth you see on the altar was a gift from Father Alex Gonzalez, our pastor from 2011-2014. The cloth was hand embroidered by the nuns of Immaculate Conception in Cali, Colombia, Father Alex’s home country. He gave it to Transfiguration in 2013. Perhaps the theme of the grapes and vines embroidered on the cloth are reminiscent of the parable of the fruitful vine in the gospel. Wedding Anniversary Mass 2015 Bishop Michael F. Burbidge invites all couples celebrating 25, 50 or more years of marriage to honor their vocation of marriage. The Wedding Anniversary Mass will take place on Sunday, October 18 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 300 Dundee Road, Pinehurst. Family Members are welcome to attend. Please register through your parish office beginning in September through Friday, October 9.

2015 Catechetical Sunday This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 20, 2015, and will focus on the theme "Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person." Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

The Office of Human Life and Dignity and the Office of Catholic Formation and Evangelization are collaborating to bring you this extensive page of resources. We are all catechists- teachers, parents, grandparents- really all of the lay faithful. The diocese has created a webpage which we hope will be useful at in your classrooms, in your parish and in your homes in promotion the theme of Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person. Go to this website to learn more : http://dioceseofraleigh.org/content/catechetical-sunday-2015 Monica's Hope: Supporting Parents who Experience a Poor Prenatal Diagnosis Come join us during Respect Life Month for a workshop on how to pastorally support parents as they struggle with the news that their unborn baby has a structural anomaly, physical or intellectual disability. Speakers will include board members from Be Not Afraid, a national network of ministries that provide local support persons and pastoral care resources to assist couples facing such challenging circumstances who still choose to carry to term and lovingly welcome their child. A Parent Panel will witness to the enormous benefit that the support from such an organization can offer. Information on volunteer opportunities, including how to receive appropriate training, will be provided. Whether you have experienced a poor prenatal diagnosis yourself and wish to serve as a peer minister to other families, or you feel called to witness to the beauty of all human life by providing ancillary support for the Monica's Hope program, please join us for this special day. Similar programs in other dioceses have proved invaluable for priests and deacons, lay and religious pastoral associates, crisis pregnancy center staff, counselors, social workers, nurses and physicians. Saturday, October 10th, 9am-4pm, St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Cary, North Carolina. For more information or to register, please contact: Gwyneth Spaeder 443-798-1811 [email protected] Evening Discussion with the Bishop on LAUDATO SI’ -On Care for Our Common Home Pope Francis’ recent encyclical letter has generated interest around the world.
